Darren Doyle, story: Laney Meredith, photos: The Wildcats have now clawed their way back to a .500 record of 6-6 with a win against district foe Butler County Tuesday night in Morgantown after starting the season 0-5. Edmonson County saw three starters in double figures in the 76-68 win, in a game where team play was one of the main focuses. "We have to share the ball and make the extra pass," said Coach Mac before the game. "We'll have to rebound, keep our turnovers down and defend. If we can do that, we'll be ok." That gameplan was executed with perfection as the Wildcats edged the Bears in rebounding 26-25, had two fewer turnovers, and had 11 team assists compared to Butler County's 5. Butler County was hot from the perimeter for much of the game, but the Wildcats answered with good outside shooting of their own, knocking down 50% from behind the arc. Edmonson County led 23-17 after the first and stretched their lead to 42-31 at the half. Bailey Board blazed the way for the Wildcats with 23 points, shooting an impressive 9/11 from the field and knocking down 3 out of 4 three-pointers on the night.
Point guard Tucker Cole also had a solid performance as he racked up 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Caleb Skaggs was the other Wildcat in double figures with 14 points, shooting 5 for 7 from the field, including two 3's. The Wildcats struggled a bit from the foul line late in the second half, shooting only 60% for the game, but held off the Bears down the stretch despite a couple of Butler County runs that cut EC's lead to only 6 at one point in the fourth. "I thought we outplayed them in most areas of the game," said assistant coach Bart Weaver. "But daggone it, if we'd just hit some free throws in the fourth quarter, we don't have to sweat it as hard," he said laughing. "Butler County is a good team," Weaver said. "They've got some weapons. We gave up more points than we have in a little while, but thank goodness we got the win on the road." The Wildcats are scheduled to take on the Trinity Raiders in another district match up this Friday at ECHS at this year's basketball homecoming. The girls are scheduled to play the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 6pm. The WildcatsLive pregame show is scheduled to begin around 5:50pm.

Darren Doyle, story: Laney Meredith photos: The Lady Cats won their sixth game in a row Tuesday night, defeating the Butler County Lady Bears 41-24 on the road. It was also the first district game of the season and according to Lady Cat assistant coach Barry Booth, getting a jump on the district standings is always a good thing. "Butler didn't play as well as they could have tonight, but they're really hard to handle," Booth said. "We're nowhere near as big as they are, but we played good fundamental basketball tonight." Although outsized by Butler County, the Lady Cats used their quickness and defense to their advantage and forced many turnovers against the Lady Bears which resulted in lots of transition points. Led by Caitlin Simon's 18 points, Edmonson County was in control the entire way leading 14-9 after the first quarter and took a 22-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Lady Cats were plagued with fouls throughout the second half but the Lady Bears managed to shoot only 30% from the freethrow line, making only 3 of 12 in the third quarter.
The third quarter pretty much iced the game for Edmonson County as they outscored Butler 12-2 to take a 34-19 lead going into the fourth and the Lady Cats went on to notch the win. Edmonson County is now 11-4 on the season and will face Trinity at home this Friday in the 2017 Basketball Homecoming at ECHS beginning at 6pm in a girl/boy doubleheader. Trinity is 12-4 on the season and sit atop the third region standings, ahead of Muhlenberg (2) and Edmonson County (3). Peyton Martin finished with 8 points, Skylar Lewis added 7 points and 9 rebounds, Katlin Collins had 6 and Emma Rose Vincent had 2. Edmonson Voice Sports, Madison Doyle photos: The Lady Cats cruised past Warren East Monday night at ECHS 62-42 in the fifth straight win for Edmonson County, led by Caitlin Simon's 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. The Lady Raiders held their own in the first quarter, trailing only 11-9 going into the second, but Edmonson County began to create some space and stretched the EC lead to 30-16 at the half. The Lady Cats continued their execution in the second half as they went on to notch the 20-point victory.
In addition to Simon's performance, Skylar Lewis and Peyton Martin also had solid nights as Lewis scored a season-high 15 with 4 rebounds while Martin added 13. The remaining box score was: Collins 5, Cline 2, Logsdon 2, Alexander 1. The Lady Cats improve to 10-4 on the season and are scheduled to travel to Morgantown on Tuesday night to take on Butler County in the first district game of the year. The girl/boy doubleheader has a 6pm tip off. The WildcatsLive pregame show will start around 5:45pm. |
