A Bowling Green woman slipped and fell in the crosswalk between Bank of Edmonson County and the Community Center today, resulting in a trip to the hospital. Alma Martin, (75) of Bowling Green was walking across the street in the parking lot on her way to the community center building. Family members said she saw an oncoming car and tried to hurry up through the crosswalk. As she attempted to take an accelerated step, she slipped on the wet pavement and landed face-first in the road. She suffered a large gash on her forehead as a result of the fall. Edmonson County PAWS was holding a fundraising event inside the community center and Animal Control Officer Eric Roscoe who was also inside, was able to give first aid and contact EMS. Several members of PAWS rushed to the woman's side to help. She was taken to the Medical Center via Edmonson EMS. Family members said that other than being shaken up and needing some stitches, Mrs. Martin is going to be ok. Judge Executive Wil Cannon, who helped direct traffic at the scene, credited the quick action of volunteers. "It's what makes Edmonson County what it is, people helping others." There was no indication that the approaching vehicle was involved nor was accused of any traffic violation. It was also not implied that the vehicle did not have intentions of stopping at the crosswalk. Two vehicles were stopped at the crosswalk after the accident and both drivers offered help at the scene.

(September 15, 2016) – Representative Regina Bunch, R-Williamsburg, has successfully worked with Governor Matt Bevin and Tim Bargo of First Priority Tri-County to proclaim September 28, 2016 as the Day of Prayer Over Students Across Kentucky. Seeking to raise awareness of the spiritual needs of Kentucky’s students, the proclamation encourages the mobilization of thousands of adults to pray for and with their teenagers. “Our students face extreme challenges when it comes to peer pressure in our schools and negative influences throughout society,” said Rep. Regina Bunch. “I believe each of us must do everything in our power to ensure our children are not only protected, but encouraged and supported as they develop into our next community and state leaders.” Rep. Bunch has worked for several years in the legislature to see a proclamation approved for this matter. Governor Matt Bevin is the first Governor to approve this day of observance. “I commend Governor Bevin for his help in seeing that the safety and positive development of our students is a priority in this state,” added Rep. Bunch. “I, along with First Priority Tri-County, have worked for several years to see this proclamation succeed, and I appreciate the Governor working with us to ensure that prayer is offered for the safety, strength, and wisdom of our students.” Citizens of Kentucky are encouraged to observe and pray for our state’s children on September 28, 2016. Edmonson Voice Staff, photo KLC Representative Michael Meredith (R-Brownsville) was honored with a “Friend of Kentucky Cities” award at the Brownsville City Council meeting on Monday. The “Friend of Kentucky Cities” award is given by the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) to legislators who perform outstanding work in the legislature advocating for issues that impact cities across the state. “I am honored to receive this award from the Kentucky League of Cities. My work in government and public service started eight years ago as a Brownsville City Council member, where I served two years,” said Rep. Meredith. “In 2016, I had the opportunity to work on several bills that will improve Kentucky cities and the services they offer. Whether it’s important safety protections like volunteer and paid firefighters and police officers, or the improvement of local code enforcement, our cities offer so much. I am proud of the legislative successes this year, and I look forward to making Kentucky cities even better in the future.” J.D. Chaney, KLC deputy executive director, said that the KLC appreciates the dedication and hard work put forth by Representative Meredith during the 2016 legislative session. “Representative Meredith sponsored House Bill 422 which was a KLC initiative that consolidates all current local code enforcement provisions into one KRS chapter and statutory scheme. This was a top priority for Kentucky cities in 2016, and we commend Representative Meredith for his leadership on this issue.”
Jonathan Steiner, executive director/CEO of the Kentucky League of Cities, also commended Representative Meredith: “Representative Meredith has been a strong voice for Kentucky cities both in Brownsville as a city council member and in Frankfort as a representative. He has continued to be a champion for Kentucky cities, and we appreciate his wide-ranging and consistent support. KLC is sincerely grateful for the relationship we have with Representative Meredith and are pleased to give him this award.” Founded in 1927, the Kentucky League of Cities is a membership association of more than 370 cities across the commonwealth. KLC has offices in Lexington and Frankfort and provides cities, leaders and employees with a number of services, including legislative advocacy, legal services, financial services, community consulting, policy development, research, training and education, and more. Meredith is seeking re-election as the Kentucky State Representative in District 19, serving Edmonson and Warren Counties. His opponent is democrat John Wayne Smith of Smiths Grove, who in February of this year, was found guilty of failing to report suspected child abuse during the time he served as Director of Bluegrass Academy. He was sentenced to 90 days home incarceration, one year of probation, fined $10,000, and ordered to pay over $2,000 in restitution. The Edmonson County Fiscal Court held a public hearing this morning at 8:55am for the purpose of public discussion about the tax rate for 2016. Anyone wishing to add input or ask questions was invited to this morning's meeting.
Judge Wil Cannon proposed that no changes would be made to the tax rates and opened the floor for discussion. After no discussion was had, the court voted to keep tax rates the same as the previous year at the following rates in cents per $100: Real Property 13.9 Tangible Property 19.5 Motor Vehicle 17.1 Inventory 19.5 Watercraft 19.5 Aircraft 19.5 Editor's note: The Edmonson Voice is regularly asked why meetings such as this are not announced in our online publication. By state law, the court is required to advertise public meetings and notices in a printed newspaper only, for which the court pays regular rates. The court normally does not pay to have the same info published in the Edmonson Voice. Darren Doyle, story It was a low-key fiscal court meeting overall on Monday, September 12, 2016 at the Edmonson County Courthouse as no major discussions were held or brought before the court. Road Foreman Ray Page reported that the Willie Webb Road Bridge issue had been repaired, and in the process, crews hauled around twenty loads of dirt to Bee Spring Park and around six loads to HWY 70 Park. He said crews had also completed a large amount of work at Chalybeate Park around the trails. He also said that the new county trucks will be picked up between Oct 1 - 15th of this year. Jailer Hank Vincent reported that the overall number of county inmates currently lodged in the Hart County Jail had dropped to 14. He reported that one is enrolled in home incarceration and that there were no current major medical claims. He also added that one jailer's vehicle was broken down. Parks and Rec Administrator Greg Hudson reported that the dirt hauled to Bee Spring Park dirt was leveled for an area of the park to be used as temporary ball field. He said the field will be open with no fence. He also said Parks and Rec is now planning a two mile run and a one mile walk for October 29 and is working on this year's Halloween in the park. He also announced that this year's final concert in the park will be held on September 24 at 6pm, and will be a DJ'd sock hop concert. The court also approved the Parks and Rec Policy and Procedure handbook which Hudson said was much needed. Magistrate Edd Rich said he supported Greg, because he had helped the program to move forward. Judge Wil Cannon agreed.“Greg has lots of good ideas and is doing a good job of making things happen," he said. Cannon noted that a policy and procedure manual helps to protect county entities from liability. The court also acknowledge a small increase in the county's Library Tax rate from 6.8% to 7.3% Library officials noted that there hadn't been any increase in three years. Rhonda Clemmons, Tourism and Chamber of Commerce Director said the chamber is in the process of finalizing this year's Golf Scramble as well trying to finalize a "Shop EC" program, where gift certificates can be purchased at one place for multiple county businesses and organizations. She also announced that the Annual Chamber Dinner will be held on November 10th at Mammoth Cave Hotel. The court also approved a 25mph speed limit for Kailey Court, a small road in the Arthur Blvd subdivision off KY HWY 1749 in Wingfield. County Clerk Kevin Alexander said the recent delinquent tax sale on Sept 6 was well attended and brought in around $38K for the county. He also said he was preparing for the upcoming general election: He noted that the Wingfield Voting Precinct will be open for the election but the border between Wingfield and the SEES district fell at North and South Alexander Creek Road. He said those on the east side of the road will still vote at SEES. Everyone on the west side will be moved to Wingfield Fire Dept. "Some people say that they were told if you lived on the east side but owned land on other side, you could vote in Wingfield, but that's not true," he said. "We understand there are still frustrations, but that's just incorrect information. Where you live 51% of the time is the same district in which you vote." The next fiscal court meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 26, 2016 at 9am. Edmonson District Court was held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. The Honorable Judge John M. McCarty presiding. Douglas Bennie Sanders, Speeding 25mph over limit. Possession of controlled substance first degree-first offense-meth. Drug paraphernalia. Possession of marijuana. Continued in one week. Edmonson Voice Staff Report Emergency personnel responded to a hectic scene Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Mis Amigos Mexican Grill after a pickup collided with another truck and trailer, turning the trailer on it's side and knocking the axle from underneath it. Police said that Matthew Davis, (40) of Brownsville was headed south on HWY 259 and was attempting to turn left into the restaurant's parking lot. It was also reported that Charles Johnson, (56) of Brownsville, who was also traveling south a few vehicles behind, apparently lost the brakes in his pickup. Unable to stop, officials said that Johnson swerved left to avoid rear ending the stopped cars but collided with Davis' trailer as he was turning into the parking lot. Officials reported that no one was injured in the accident. Responding to the scene was the Brownsville Police Department and the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office.
Darren Doyle, story and photos C&C Firearms hosted a raffle today at their retail location, giving away hundreds of dollars in prizes while raising money for what owner Josh Casey said is a very worthy cause. First announced on the Edmonson Voice in late July, Casey first offered up a Savage .308 rifle as the prize in the raffle with all proceeds going to the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office donation fund for the purpose of purchasing "Tango," a highly trained K9 German Shepherd drug officer. Casey said as word about the event and it's purpose began to grow, so did the donors and prizes for the event. In addition to the rifle, boots, optics, ammo, gift cards and other prizes were also awarded. The popular local gun shop also held a first annual used gun auction in conjunction with the fundraiser, hosted by David Lindsey Auctions. Hundreds filled the parking lots to see if they were lucky winners, bidders, and to show support for the sheriff's office project. Most local law enforcement officers were at the event and Sheriff Shane Doyle addressed the crowd. "It seems like everyday in the national media you hear some other reason people don't want to support law enforcement," Doyle said. "That's not the case here. We're thankful to be part of this community and see everyone come together to help our cause. Thanks in part to this event, we now have the funds needed to purchase Tango. We're working on the final details now to make it happen." Doyle also commended Deputy Jordan Jones who has taken the lead role in the project. Jones will be Tango's handler and he also thanked those in attendance. Deputy Jones has put in hours of his own time to help move the project forward and will undergo additional training in a couple of weeks, according to Doyle. Casey said he was well pleased with today's event and was humbled by the support shown from Edmonson County citizens.
"Given the state of our country and current events, it's truly heartwarming to see the people of Edmonson County make such a clear demonstration of their dedication to law and order as well as their support of the men and women who work everyday to ensure that our children have a safe place in which to grow up," he said. "I am personally grateful for the support my family and my business have been shown in the first difficult years of growing a business. I intend for this to be my home for a long time and hope I can find a way to repay everyone for that support. All in all it was just so much fun, watching gun savvy sportsmen and collectors bid on their favorite guns." Casey said he will present the sheriff's office with a check for $3,300 on Tuesday. "All of this has to be credited to the people and businesses of our community," he added. Edmonson Voice Staff, Jimmie Duvall, photos The 2016 Edmonson County Fair Pageants were held last night at the Edmonson County High School Auditorium with Tiny, Little, and Mrs. Edmonson County getting things started. Event coordinator Amanda Lich said that moving the pageants to the auditorium this year seemed to work well for everyone. "Tonight will be the main event beginning at 7 p.m. with the Preteen, Teen, and Miss Edmonson County competing for their opportunity to represent our county fair at the state pageants," Lich said. "As one of the last open county fairs in Kentucky, we host contestants from all over the Commonwealth who are trying to earn their spot to compete for the state county fair titles. It is important to both the Lion's Club and the Pageant Committee to preserve the tradition of the pageant and so we always crown a local winner in addition to a state representative winner who can be from anywhere in Kentucky, including Edmonson County." She said that the local winner will make appearances throughout the year at special events in the county. "In planning for next year, we are considering changing the format of our Miss category to attract more local contestants," she said. "Ultimately, the goal is to raise funds for the Lion's Club to reinvest into our community, so we are always looking for new ways to grow participation. I want to thank all of our volunteers with the Lion's Club and the Pageant Committee for making everything run so smoothly. It is a labor of love for these folks and they do it because they love Edmonson County." 2016 Little Miss Edmonson County Fair - Lexi Shea Cox, daughter of Lee and Connie Cox of Glasgow 2016 Little Miss Edmonson County - Brooklyn Nicole Patrick, daughter of Allen and Courtney Johnson of Brownsville 1st Runner Up - Kenzlea Marie Decker, daughter of Jeremy Decker and Andrea Swift of Leitchfield 2nd Runner Up - Hannah Claire Cassady, daughter of Kyle and Stephanie Cassady of Chalybeate 3rd Runner Up - Sydney Nicole Blanton, daughter of Adam and Allie Blanton of Bee Spring 2016 Tiny Miss Edmonson County Fair - Shaylee Marie Hampton, daughter of Selina Linder and Jonathan Hampton of Roundhill 2016 Tiny Miss Edmonson County - Bristol Butler, daughter of James and Destiny Butler of Mammoth Cave 1st Runner-up - Bree Ann Johnson, daughter of Allen and Courtney Johnson of Brownsville 2nd Runner-up - Ayvan Grace Lindsey, daughter of Brandon and Jessica Lindsey of Brownsville 3rd Runner-up - Emma Lynn Hayes, daughter of Mathew Hayes and Morgan Haycraft of Leitchfield Special thanks to Amanda Lich for contributing to this report.

Chalybeate Fire Chief Daniel Johnson is reaching out to his community to seek help with a dire need that his department faces. Johnson says that the CVFD is in desperate need of new turnout gear, which is the typical firefighter uniform equipment, consisting of a helmet, hood, coat, pants, and boots. Johnson said that the updated equipment is required not only in order for fire departments to stay in compliance with state and federal regulations, but also as a matter of personal safety. "Right now, the gear we have is three years out of date," he said. "What we have expired about three years ago and it's not safe." Local fire departments operate on budgets funded by taxes and any available grants. Johnson said Chalybeate operates on a $40,000 yearly budget which is mainly funded through county taxes. He said at normal operation, which includes the firehouse, property, and truck maintenance, that amount is just enough to cover the basics. It doesn't, however, include equipment upgrades. He said one set of the turnout gear which outfits one firefighter costs over $1800. "We've got people in our community that want to join our fire department but we can't accept them because we don't have enough equipment. This is not a matter of wanting new turnout gear for looks. What we have is no longer safe for our department." Johnson said the recent fundraiser with the Dukes of Hazzard cars helped bring in $4000 for the department. He said three sets of the gear is being purchased with those funds. He also said the fire department will be at the fair each night and is selling raffle tickets for a country ham. Tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. He also noted that he wasn't a fan of simply asking Edmonson County citizens for donations, but at this point, really had no other option. With 17 sets of new gear needed, he's going to have to sell lots of tickets for the country ham. "Our departments are all made up of volunteers, you know, none of us get paid. That's ok, that's not why we do this," he said. "But we're also out here risking our lives to protect people and property. If a firefighter were to get hurt out here wearing this outdated gear, we probably couldn't get worker's comp to pay their medical bills. It's a matter of safety and doing things right." If you or your business would like to donate to the Chalybeate Fire Department gear drive, you can send a check payable to Chalybeate Fire Department to: Chief Daniel Johnson 2200 Mohawk Road Brownsville KY 42210 The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office is advising citizens of the Roundhill/ Big Reedy community to be on the lookout for a stolen backhoe.

Wet, slippery roads were said to be the cause of a single vehicle rollover crash this morning on KY HWY 728, near the "S" curves on Nolin Dam Road. The Edmonson County's Sheriff's office said that Joseph W. Meredith Jr. (28) of Sunfish was headed east on 728 when he lost control of a 1999 Chevy Tracker. Officials said the vehicle left the roadway, rolled over, and crashed into an embankment. Sheriff Shane Doyle said Meredith was wearing his seat belt during the crash, which he said greatly reduced the risk of injury. He also said volunteers helped at the scene. "We appreciate the help we received from the KY State Highway Department as they directed traffic," Doyle said. "Also, thanks to Jerry Shields, of Shields towing. He was passing by and volunteered to pull the vehicle from the ditch and move to a safer spot until AAA could arrive and recover the vehicle. The scene was safely cleared about an hour and a half faster thanks to these folks." Firefighters were called out to the Brownsville Post Office Sunday afternoon when an area resident said they heard the fire alarm sounding from the property. A thorough search of the premises resulted in no smoke, fire, nor emergency, but rather a faulty alarm. One firefighter said a possible cause for the malfunction was dust buildup on one of the alarm sensors. Brownsville Police Jeff Jewel said another possibility was a low-battery backup that caused the alarm to sound. The Brownsville Fire Department also made a return trip later that day followed by an additional response by the Brownsville Police Department. Bowling Green, KY (September 2, 2016)- Kentucky State Police Post 3 Bowling Green received a call today at approx. 12:55 pm advising that an inmate of the Warren County Regional Jail had walked away from a work detail at Basil Griffin Park in Warren County.
