Dear Mongoose,
You seem like a guy that stands up for individual rights, but I gotta problem with something this news site did once. My cousin had a wreck a few months back and the Voice was there taking pictures. My cousin told the guy taking pics that he didn't want to be in the news and asked to keep his wreck out of there but it still made the news that night. Where was his right's then and whats your stand on that? Dear Rights, Rites, Writes, Wrights, 'With great power comes great responsibility.' What's ironic about this phrase is the fact that it's from Spider-Man and Peter Parker was a freelance photographer for The Daily Bugle. "So you're saying the Voice is wrong!", hold er Newt, let's not jump to conclusions just yet. Did you know that 68% of Americans own smartphones? Not only can you check out Edmonsonvoice.com from it you can also post photos instantly to social media, and which I hate to admit, reaches far more individuals than my favorite news outlet. Unless you took time to ask the 68% that passed by the wreck not to post photos of the incident, chances are there were photos in cyberspace before your cousin's seat belt was off. Does this excuse the photographer in question? Let's get back to the responsibility part of my opening quote, as a news outlet, the Voice has a responsibility to report the news--good and bad. I'm sure the editor gets many calls from folks in the court news asking not to publish mugshots or anyone that might be cast in a negative light for that matter. In order to be fair and balanced, the news must be reported-- regardless of any backlash that might occur later. Roads in Edmonson County are state and county maintained and paid for by the taxpayer, which is me (and hopefully, you). I, you, and everyone else has a right to know what's happening on the highways or why a road is blocked, and that's where the news comes into play. Had you rather have a news outlet reporting confirmed facts by officials or some drama-happy mama posting "As The World Turns" garbage to Spacebook and My Face? Just remember this, anything you do outside your own home is subject to someone putting it online and after recent revelations, anything you do in front of your Samsung TV or an Xbox is subject to the CIA knowing it too. -MG
