The Sheriff's office responded to a rollover accident on KY HWY 259 N just past Indian Creek Road Thursday. Police said that Ralph Dreher Jr, 50, of Glasgow, was driving a van for Barren County Business Supply, Thursday around 2:30 pm when the van began sliding in a curve. Police said Dreher was unable to regain control of the van and it struck an embankment on the east shoulder of the roadway, causing the van to overturn. Miraculously, Dreher was unharmed and walked away from the crash. Although he nearly struck another vehicle in the oncoming lane, no other damage occurred and no other vehicle was involved.
Edmonson County Circuit Court Clerk Tanya Hodges has released a special statement regarding the process of jury duty summons' in Edmonson County.
"Dear Edmonson County residents, As you may know, when court cases require a jury here in the Edmonson County Courthouse, our office has to request a jury panel from Frankfort. I, nor anyone in our office has any control as to whom is mailed a jury summons. We simply request a certain amount of names, and then the names are randomly selected from a database stored in Frankfort. It has come to our attention that several families have received a summons in the name of a deceased loved one. We know this is frustrating, and sometimes painful. We deeply apologize for these incidents and we are working hard to keep this from happening in the future. A new jury panel is currently being selected and the summons' have been mailed out. Again, we do not select these names locally, but we ask that if you or a family member receive a summons for someone who has passed, to please contact our office immediately so that we can notify Frankfort in order to remove that name from the database. We are here to serve you with respect and dignity, and we deeply care about our responsibilities, our credibility, but most importantly, you, the people of Edmonson County. Please contact our office with any needs for our services, it is our pleasure to serve you. Thank you so much." Edmonson Voice Staff Afternoon rain showers contributed to two different accidents over a 2 hour period yesterday. At around 1pm yesterday afternoon, a 2005 Saturn Ion, driven by Nancy Brown, 52, of Glasgow, ran off the road on Fairview Church Road in Rocky Hill, striking a tree, and resulting in a damaged fence belonging to Mrs. Dallas Cline. Brown was not injured. Later, around 2:30pm, Jessie D. Meredith, 19, of Mammoth Cave entered the curves on Nolin Dam Road just west of the dam, and lost control of his 2001 Chevy S10. Meredith's truck struck an embankment, rolled to the driver's side, and began spinning on the roadway, finally coming to rest back on it's wheels. Meredith escaped with no injuries as well. "When the roads are wet after a dry spell, everyone knows how slick they can be. Please use caution when these summer rain showers pop up," Sheriff Shane Doyle said. "I'd also like to thank the Kyrock Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance in traffic control on Nolin Dam Road. It was a great help." Darren Doyle Edmonson Voice, photo courtesy of EC Sheriff's Office An anonymous caller contacted police yesterday with a report of a neglected horse at 311 EG Nash Road in the Big Reedy community. Upon arrival at the scene, sheriff's deputies discovered a severely malnourished horse with a leg injury that showed 8-10 inches of completely exposed bone along with decaying flesh. Photos obtained from the sheriff's department were too graphic to publish, however, one has been edited. The decomposed foot of the animal appeared to be at the point of separation from the hind leg. The horse had been unable to walk on the leg for some time. The horse had to be euthanized by a local veterinarian. The owner, Brent Basham, 41, of Roundhill was arrested and charged with Animal Cruelty, 2nd Degree. Basham reportedly had no comment. Dr. Travis England, of Thomas-England Veterinary Clinic in Smiths Grove had the unpleasant task of putting the animal down. "The picture explains a lot, but it was very grotesque," he said. It was reported that the horse had gotten its leg mangled in a fence a couple of weeks back, and this is where the initial injury supposedly took place. "It looks like the fence was wrapped around the leg at one point, and that's why we saw the deterioration of the leg from the injury down," England added. "There was no material (flesh) on the leg, just bone, which basically means the injury caused the rest of the leg to simply rot off." Dr. England said with an injury this severe, it's very surprising how strong the horse actually was, to survive in this condition for this long. "That was some kind of a horse to be able to go up and down like he was, even though he could only walk on three legs." The doctor said the euthanasia process was quick and humane. He explained that the horse was given a sedative and then the drug was administered. "It all happened easily and quietly. The horse just laid down and went to sleep." England, a vet with 5 years experience, said it was one of the most severe neglect cases he'd ever seen. "Could it have been treated early on? It's hard to say, but that could've been determined way before now, and the animal wouldn't have had to suffer like it did all this time." England said that leg injuries present the most threat to horses, and sometimes what seems to be an insignificant injury can easily become deadly. He encouraged horse owners to seek treatment immediately with any injury. Deputies Jordan Jones and Stoney Phillips worked the case. "Animal cruelty is a very serious issue and will not be tolerated," said Deputy Jones. "In this case, the horse was suffering a great deal and couldn't be helped with medical treatment. I'd like to thank Thomas-England Veterinary Clinic for their quick response time and their aid to this suffering animal." Basham was transported and lodged in the Hart County Jail. If found guilty, he could face up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. EC Parks and Rec Events Coordinator Greg Hudson is encouraging anyone with interest in the elections of the upcoming Little League Basketball board or next year's Baseball/Softball board to attend a meeting this Friday night, in the Community Center at 6pm.
Since the Fiscal Court released it's authority of the little league programs, new steps will have to be taken in order to properly set up new boards for the youth sports. "We've been looking at the rules and the league constitutions," Hudson said. "This meeting will be for anyone with interest in these boards. We want it to be informative and positive." Elections for board member positions will be held soon. As always, little league sports require many volunteers and leaders from the community. Hudson is hoping for a good turnout. Darren Doyle, story and photo It's hard to believe for some, but the 2015 summer break will be officially over bright and early tomorrow morning when hundreds of Edmonson County students will make the trek back to school for the 2015-16 school year. School buses will be on their routes all throughout the county tomorrow and Sheriff Shane Doyle is urging everyone to use extra caution. "When buses are back on the road, sometimes it takes a little getting used-to," he said. "Remember, if you try to pass a bus with their stop sign engaged, the bus drivers will get your plate number and we will charge you with a crime. The safety of our kids is our top priority." If you will be traveling on KY 743 (Chalybeate School Road), you'll want to allow as much as 20 extra minutes for your commute as road construction has been in full swing all summer long. Traffic is narrowed to one lane in the area near Chalybeate Church. This will cause delays throughout the morning as temporary traffic lights are in place. Tomorrow won't be the time for you to run late on your morning route. Construction is planned to be complete by the end of September.
Sheriff Doyle is also reminding drivers that school zones will have a 25mph speed limit in the morning and officers will be out and about. Edmonson Voice Staff On Monday, August 3rd, 2015, Matthew T. Carroll, 32, of Bee Spring, was found guilty in a trial by jury in the Edmonson County District Court. Carroll was accused on May 17th, 2014, of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Carroll, represented by Gary S. Logsdon, was charged after being found unresponsive in his truck behind the steering wheel. According to the citation from Deputy Wally Ritter, Carroll was passed out in the truck, and after waking up, exhibited behavior consistent with intoxication. County Attorney J.B. Hines was happy with the verdict. "We presented a strong case, and thanks to good, solid police work, I was given a good case to work with. I'm also pleased with the sentence recommended by the jury. I asked for a 12 month sentence, and they gave him a 12 month sentence," Hines said. "I hope that this deters people from driving intoxicated in the future." According to the sheriff's office, this case was a little different in that it was a drug related DUI, and involved expert testimony from a Kentucky State Police forensic scientist. According to the lab report, both Xanax and Valium were found in Carroll's system. Edmonson Voice Staff We've just obtained photos from a structure fire that occurred Tuesday, July 28, on Mt. Zion Road. According to officials, at around 11PM, the call was received of an abandoned burning mobile home which once belonged to the late Herman Wolfe. Firefighters battle the flames late Tuesday night, July 28. (courtesy BPD)
After shutting down a road safety checkpoint late Saturday night/Sunday morning, officers were on their way home when Deputy Jordan Jones met and clocked a northbound 1995 Mustang GT driving 105MPH on Veteran's Memorial Highway (KY 259). Deputy Jones immediately began pursuit of the vehicle that reportedly reached speeds upwards of 120MPH. Two other officers that were almost home in other parts of the county received the call and joined the chase in Brownsville as the suspect raced out KY HWY 70 (Mammoth Cave Road). Police said the chase went almost to Mammoth Cave National Park when the driver of the Mustang ran off the road near Snapdragon Lane, where the suspect was said to have exited his car, was combative with police, but eventually subdued by Deputy Jones. That's when the driver, Trevor Vincent, 20, of Bee Spring was arrested and charged with DUI-aggravated circumstance, Fleeing/Evading 1st, 4 counts of wanton endangerment of a police officer 1st degree, Speeding 26MPH or greater over the limit, and Reckless driving, as well as several other charges. Police said Vincent claimed ownership of the car, but it was actually registered to someone in Madisonville, KY. Vincent reportedly told police he didn't know why it was registered to someone else. The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Brownsville Police Department and the District 2 Constable. Vincent was transported and lodged in the Hart County Jail. Edmonson Voice Staff In a continued effort during the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign," local police are still cracking down on intoxicated driving. During a safety road check held at KY 259 and KY 70 at Hilltop, police say a woman came through the stop, showing obvious signs of driving while drunk. Police said they administered field sobriety tests to the woman where she continued to show further signs of intoxicated driving, which resulted in her arrest. Andrea Eastman, 30, of Brownsville, was charged with DUI first offense and Refusal of chemical test. She was transported and lodged in the Hart County Jail. Sheriff Shane Doyle said the program has been good for Edmonson County. "Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of death in young adults," he said. "We want to make a maximum effort to ensure that those deaths don't happen here. I've secured grant money to fund the overtime for our officers during this campaign. The bottom line is, we want drunk drivers off our roads." Edmonson Voice Staff The Brownsville City Police Department responded to a call of an abandoned vehicle located on Carder St on Tuesday, July 28. Area residents said the car had been there for some time with no activity, no one knew who owned it, and wanted it removed. Police then called a towing company to have the vehicle, a 1994 BMW, towed from its location. Police said once the car was towed to the company's lot, the towing company had to access the engine compartment in order to disable the vehicle since it was locked. That's when the tow truck driver reportedly found several syringes stashed in the fuse panel of the car and called police again. Officers then obtained a search warrant and that's when they reportedly found 5 methadone pills, a small bag of heroin, several more syringes, and more drug paraphernalia. "As far as we know, this is the first time heroin has been discovered in Edmonson County," said BPD Officer Nathan Dennis. Police say they have a suspect in the case and the investigation is ongoing. We'll have more as details become available. Edmonson District Court was held on Tuesday, July 28, with the Honorable Judge Renona Carol Browning, presiding.
