Darren Doyle, story: Edmonson County Fiscal Court was held on Monday, September 11, 2017 in the upstairs courtroom of the county courthouse. After those in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance with a little more feeling than usual on this 9/11, county business and reports continued. Road Report: County Road Foreman Ray Page reported that he and his crews had been busy clearing downed trees and limbs from the excessive rainfall and results from the leftovers of Hurricane Harvey. He said crews had to pause blacktopping operations to see to the cleanup, and even members of the mowing crew were recruited to assist. Page said that the mowing crew was back to regular work and blacktop operations had resumed. Sheriff Report: Sheriff Shane Doyle was absent due to the annual Kentucky Sheriff’s Conference, but Chief Deputy Jeff Brooks filled in. Brooks didn't have a report to give but opened the floor for any questions from the court. Magistrate Joe Durbin said he'd been contacted by someone at the local Child Protection Services Office who had asked Mag. Durbin to ask the Sheriff's Office why they weren't getting as much assistance for home calls as they used to. Brooks said that it's just like everything else with the Sheriff's Office, which depends on available manpower. Brooks said that regular policy was for law enforcement to assist child protection in cases where drug activity or violence is suspected and when the Sheriff's office was tied up on another call or shorthanded that KSP was to be dispatched. Durbin also said the child protection office also asked why all available law enforcement officers can attend a ballgame but can't respond to other calls. Magistrate Durbin also said, "This should probably be discussed in private, but you all (the Sheriff's Office) came to us publicly in the last meeting so we're coming to you now in public." Brooks said he couldn't comment as to what calls get answered from whom, but said he'd try to obtain that information. Jailer Report: Deputy Jailer Todd Vincent reported that Hart County Jail was currently housing 21 inmates from Edmonson County while there were two other prisoners on home incarceration. County Attorney: CA Greg Vincent reported that his office received a letter from the City of Bowling Green demanding reimbursed training expenses, adding up to over $40K for a police cadet that the Sheriff's Office had recently hired, as per the contract between the City and the cadet. Vincent said that no one, in fact, was hired, but rather the cadet in question was volunteering with the Sheriff's office. He said that he responded with a letter declining the reimbursement due to the fact that the former cadet was a volunteer only, and because of that, the cadet and/or the county was exempt from reimbursing any expenses. He said he received no response from the City of BG and didn't expect to hear anything else as he felt like the City was unaware that the cadet was only a volunteer and not an employee. In other county news, the County Attorney pay raise discussed at last meeting was reviewed again. Judge Executive Wil Cannon had recommended a $2K per year pay raise for the County's portion of the salary, which had not changed in nearly 20 years at a rate of $18,800 annually. The county pays a portion of the County Attorney's salary while the state pays the rest.
Magistrate Edd Rich agreed with the $2000 raise and was in the process of making that motion when others began to discuss. Magistrate Durbin said because of the county's current financial strain, he suggested a $1200 raise to make the amount an even $20K per year, noting that the magistrates took only a modest raise themselves. The motion passed. The court also voted to:
Rhonda Clemmons with the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism reported that over 2600 email addresses were obtained from those attending county booth at the state fair, which would help in drawing more tourism to the county. She also announced the Chamber cookout would be held on Sept 23, 11am-1pm, and will feature live music, kids’ activities, and free pony rides. The event is free and sponsored by Jacob's Home Furnishings and Laura's Hilltop Restaurant. The next meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 9am.

The Brownsville Police Department has reported that they responded to a 911 call today at the Minit Mart in Brownsville around 1pm to a report of an assault taking place inside the store. Police said that Ms. Emily Lashley was allegedly confronted by three individuals, Haley Gertizer, Zach Hogan, and Brett Higgs and a fight ensued between the two young women. Police said video security footage of the incident shows the fight taking place. According to police, Ms. Lashley's wallet was dropped during the altercation and the three individuals grabbed it and ran from the store into the woods behind Green River Apartments on foot. Law enforcement officials from the BPD and Edmonson County Sheriff's Office searched the woods and highways around ECHS and HWY 70 and while two of the individuals were spotted in the woods, they were not apprehended and are still on the run. The Sheriff's office said they located Ms. Lashley's wallet in the parking lot of the car wash and they reported the wallet had been emptied. Police said Higgs turned himself in and was charged with Robbery 2nd degree. He has been lodged in the Hart County Jail. The other two are wanted for possible robbery and assault charges. Gertizer is said to be around 19-20 years old and Hogan is 20-22 years old. They were last known to be somewhere in the wooded area across the street from the HWY 70 Ballpark area. Darren Doyle, story: photos by Charlie Peck: Four different local fire departments responded to a house fire located near the intersection of Stockholm Church Road (KY HWY 1352) and Paul Burba Road but were unable to save the structure on Thursday, around 11am. The house was owned by Mr. Don Estes of Louisville and had been in the process of being remodeled, according to Lincoln Fire Chief Steve Sanders. Chief Sanders said he arrived on scene within 2-3 minutes of the call from the dispatch center but the house was fully involved upon his arrival.
"We contained the fire to the area but that's about all you can do when fire is already through the roof," said Sanders. "Our main concern was seeing that everyone was ok and luckily no one was there at the time." No official cause of the fire was given and there were no reported injuries. The house was a total loss. Local Men's Request For Texas Relief Effort Explodes, They Are Now En Route With 15K LBS Of Supplies9/2/2017 Darren Doyle, story: Two local men, Zachary Bullock and Tommy Rigsby, saw a need 850 miles away and thanks the powers of kindness and the internet, they are now in route to Texas after driving most of the night, hauling an estimated 15,000 pounds of supplies for Hurricane Harvey victims. Bullock contacted the Edmonson Voice on Wednesday and asked us to help pass the word that he and others were organizing a supply drive to send to Texas for those in need. He had recently purchased a 34 foot enclosed trailer and wanted to fill it with as many supplies as possible. He was going to be set up at the public library in an attempt to fill the trailer. In addition to the two men's own Facebook posts, we published an article on the same day and within hours, Bullock and Rigsby discovered that they were going to need another trailer. "People from everywhere wanted to help and the thing just took off," said Rigsby. "We asked for people to drop off supplies on Thursday from around 4pm to 7pm but stuff started coming in from everywhere." Local business C&C Firearms opened their doors as an early drop off point for those who'd be unable to donate items within the requested time period. Owner Josh Casey said items began pouring in immediately. "It was nice to see a couple of local young guys put forth this much effort to help others," said Casey. "We were well pleased with the turnout here and were glad to help." Rigsby said as they began filling the trailer on Thursday, they were soon overwhelmed with the amount of supplies that were coming in not only from the county, but people everywhere wanted to help. The enclosed trailer became so full that Rigsby said the axles began to bend. Needing help, he called a friend in Bowling Green, Trevor Baise, who donated the use of another truck, and Dick Davis soon donated another trailer. "We were supposed to leave yesterday around noon but stuff kept coming in," he said. "We finally left last night around 8pm with everything. We've had some obstacles to overcome but we're in Arkansas this morning and we hope to make the deliveries this afternoon in Texas." Rigsby said they've faced mechanical troubles on one of the two personal pickups they're driving, but they're trucking on. They said they plan on flying the Kentucky Commonwealth state flag on one of the trucks just before their arrival to show Texans that they have friends in Kentucky. Not only the bluegrass state in general, but also in Edmonson County. "No matter what people think about Edmonson County, we'll give you the shirts off our backs," Rigsby said. **Correction: an earlier version of this article said that Trevor Baise donated the extra trailer, when in fact, he donated another truck. Dick Davis donated the additional trailer. The Edmonson Voice apologizes for the error. According to a statement from Mammoth Cave National Park, the ferry is closed. Green River measures 18 feet and rising at the ferry crossing. A great deal of debris is drifting downstream.
The park has received 7.9 inches of rain, falling steadily for the last 37 hours as a result of Hurricane Harvey. For updates on ferry operations, call 270-758-2166. We're happy to celebrate our third birthday this weekend and we'd like to say THANK YOU to all our fantastic readers and viewers for keeping us around. Our start was only an idea on Labor Day weekend in 2014, and we had no clue whether or not the idea would be accepted. Our very first week, our site was visited 20,000 times from nearly 6,000 readers. Since that time, our readership has grown more than triple of those numbers and we're proud to now be Edmonson County's number one source for local news and information. Also this past year, our site was visited almost 4 million times...a quadrupled number from our first year. Over the past year, we've made some improvements to the network while keeping one focus: to continue bringing you all of the news, sports, weather, and information that impacts Edmonson County. We've added to our sports staff, reporters and photographers, and we're also proud to now have our own staff meteorologist who's brought the very first weather camera in the county, which shows a view of the county courthouse. Our live sports broadcasts are now more popular than ever, thanks to our WildcatsLive crew. We also have an exclusive agreement with Edmonson County High School to bring you live football and basketball action throughout the year, made possible through wonderful sponsors from our area. We've also brought you live volleyball and softball action, and we hope to include baseball and other sports and school events for you in the year to come.
Everywhere we go, folks thank us for bringing local news to our county, but the thanks is owed to YOU for allowing us to bring it to you. So again, on behalf of the entire VOICE staff, thanks for another year. We hope to continue to grow and improve as we work around the clock, providing you the best possible local news and information service available. Darren Doyle, story and photos: In an ironic twist today, firefighters didn't have enough water to put out a raging barn fire on Ray Houchin Road in the midst of heavy rainfall and flooding conditions. The barn, owned by Ray "Doc" Houchin, was full of what was estimated to be 20 year-old hay, according to a caretaker of the farm. Firefighters said the cause of the fire was unknown, but was likely to be some sort of wiring issue as the barn had electric service. Emergency workers fought the fire in ankle-deep water around one area of the barn but the burning hay supplied too much fuel for firefighters to contain.
Firefighters said that with as much water that had surrounded the barn from rain and even more expected, they made the choice to let the barn burn itself out after a very wet effort. Responding to the scene were the Rocky Hill, Park City, Brownsville, and Chalybeate Fire Departments. No injuries were reported. Mammoth Cave National Park Public Information Officer Vickie Carson contacted the Edmonson Voice this morning and provided updates to the park schedule and current status. Cave tours are open and running on schedule. The ferry is open and running as Green River is rising. Although the ferry was closed for most of August because of low water, the river is rising today. On Thursday, the park closed the rivers to canoes, kayaks and boats based on the forecast of heavy rains. Green River and Nolin River are closed in the park until further notice. The park received 5.9 inches of rain overnight. Please call 270-758-2166 for ferry information. |
