Darren Doyle, story
The Edmonson County School Board has announced that highly acclaimed speaker and 22 year police veteran, Officer Bob Couchman with the Madisonville Police Department and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, will conduct a presentation focusing on the dangers of social media and internet predators on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at the ECHS Auditorium. Edmonson County State and Federal Programs Supervisor Jamie Carnes said the presentation is a must for parents whose children use social media and internet communication. "I first saw Officer Couchman's presentation at a summer conference and was taken aback by some of the things he described and how easy it seemed for predators to gain access to kids via the internet," Carnes said. "This information combined with the fact that so many young people have access to smart devices (basically hand-held computers) makes for many potentially scary scenarios. The more our community knows about the dangers that exist and how to recognize them, the safer our kids will be when it comes to helping them avoid criminals who would take advantage of them. Carnes said the information Officer Couchman will share is guaranteed to make people feel a bit uneasy, especially when they hear how potentially dangerous an item like a smart phone can be in the hands of an unsuspecting child. "These devices are things that are now considered to be essential to our daily lives and the 2-way access they provide to the world is often taken for granted." Social media addiction is also a problem that many young people deal with, a problem that often leads to bullying, sending and receiving inappropriate material, or other negative aspects. Officer Couchman's presentation will also cover similar ideas and subjects. "We all want our children to be safe, and the things Officer Couchman plans to discuss will arm us with knowledge that will go a long way toward helping keep them that way," Carnes added. The event is free to the public and all are welcomed to attend, however, due to the adult nature of some of the material, parental accompaniment is required for minors in attendance. The Edmonson County Chamber of Commerce has announced that their annual dinner will be Thursday, November 17, 2016 and will return to Mammoth Cave Hotel in Mammoth Cave National Park. "We are thrilled to return to our familiar venue,” said Chamber Director Rhonda Clemmons. The annual dinner was traditionally held at the hotel but ceased when the hotel started closing for winter. In cooperation with General Manager Sarah Martin, the details have been finalized. The hotel will be open and serving their tradition delights. The evening begins with a social gathering at 6 PM and Dinner and Banquet to begin at 6:30 PM. All Gold, Silver, and Bronze Partner Level Members will receive their information packets by November 1. Tickets will be available for $25 each and can be purchased directly by clicking here on the Chamber's website, edmonsonchamber.com. Edmonson County Tourism Commission will co-sponsor the event again this year. Prizes to be awarded include Citizen of the Year, and Business of the Year. All are welcome to attend the event. For more information about the dinner, or to reserve a ticket call 270-597-2222. Edmonson Voice Staff Report The Edmonson County PAWS Humane Society held a public meeting on Monday, October 10, 2016 in Chalybeate where they introduced their board members to the public, delivered their mission statement and had a meet-and-greet with visitors in attendance. During the meeting, PAWS Vice President Scott Lindsey presented a certificate of appreciation to Edmonson County High School junior Deidra Lawler. Deidra started a Go Fund Me page with the hopes of helping the efforts of PAWS to bring Edmonson County a new animal shelter. The page has already raised $435. Among the attendees were Judge Executive Wil Cannon and Edmonson County Animal Control Officer Eric Roscoe. "We enjoyed sharing with the community what PAWS has been working on since June of this year, and how much we've already progressed toward our goals," said Lindsey. "It also gave us an opportunity to publicly recognize Deidre Lawler for her fundraising efforts for PAWS, and introduce more people to our new Animal Control Officer, Eric Roscoe, who is doing a phenomenal job for our county. We appreciate everyone that came out." Edmonson Voice Staff Report County and city officials have announced that Halloween will be celebrated on Halloween night, Monday, October 31, 2016 from 4pm to 7pm in Edmonson County and the Brownsville city limits. "Apparently, there's been some confusion as to when we are recognizing Halloween in Edmonson County for whatever reason, so to be clear, it is actually on Halloween," said Sheriff Shane Doyle. "With that being said, we'd like to remind our trick-or-treaters and their parents and guardians to only visit homes you know or local government, churches, or reputable business Halloween activities." Brownsville City Police Chief Jeff Jewell said the same applies for activities within the city limits.
"With 'Halloween On The Square' this year, there will be much more activity on our city square," he said. "We ask parents to make sure your children have proper supervision, watch out for our kids around our streets, and make sure trick-or-treaters have proper lighting like flashlights or glow sticks if you're going to be out near and after dark." Authorities are also asking for trick-or-treating to conclude at or near 7pm, when daylight ends. "Just use common sense," Chief Jewell said. "Keep an eye on your kids and be aware that children will be very active and may not see moving traffic." Sheriff Doyle said the goal for Halloween is to ensure a safe and fun environment for all. "We want everyone to enjoy Halloween and have a good time, so our office will be out in full force to curb any mischief or criminal activity as best we can to keep everyone as safe as possible." Edmonson District Court was held on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. The Honorable Judge John M. McCarty presiding. John Adam Chapman, Possession of controlled substance first degree first offense (meth). A Lebanon Junction woman is facing a DUI charge after she was injured in an accident last night, according to the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office. Emergency personnel responded to a rollover crash on Sunfish-Bee Spring Road around 8:30PM Tuesday, October 11, 2016 where authorities said Amber Hudson (29) of Lebanon Junction, KY was traveling west. One witness who was following behind Hudson's vehicle reported to officials that the vehicle was weaving back and forth, while speeding up and slowing down. Authorities reported that Hudson failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, and exited the left side of the roadway. It was also reported that the vehicle rolled and came to rest while striking a culvert approximately 25ft off the road. She was reportedly wearing her seat belt. Officials also said that alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident and Hudson was transported to the Medical Center in Bowling Green via Edmonson EMS. The Sheriff's Office said Hudson was still receiving treatment at press time but most likely to be treated and released. She was cited for Driving Under the Influence, a charge she will face once released. Responding to the scene were the Brownsville and Bear Creek Fire Departments, as well as the Sheriff's Office and Edmonson EMS. Edmonson Voice Staff Report The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office arrested a Louisville man on Thursday, October 6 around 9pm after attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a Bee Spring man that wasn't home. The Sheriff's office said that instead, they were met by John Chapman, 36 of Louisville, an acquaintance of the man they were looking for. Authorities said they could see what appeared to be methamphetamine in plain sight. A search warrant was obtained and executed at the residence. Chapman was arrested on site and charged with Possession of Controlled Substance, First Degree, First Offense (Meth), and Drug Paraphernalia-Buy/Posses. Officials also said that Chapman also had an arrest warrant out of Jefferson County. He was lodged in the Hart County Jail where he is currently being held on a $5,000 cash bond. The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the 38th District Commonwealth Attorney's Office. Parks and Rec Program Director Greg Hudson gave an updated report of what his office had been up to over the past few weeks at fiscal court on Tuesday. He said that soccer season is still ongoing, and is scheduled to end on October 22, with a skills competition to come afterwards. He also noted that while only 31 kids signed up, parents and the young athletes have thoroughly enjoyed it and the program had gone very smoothly. He also said that little league basketball applications will taken through this Saturday from 10am-12noon at the Parks and Rec Office below the Health Department. Open “tryouts” will be held soon to let coaches see the types of players that will be available so teams can be picked fairly. He also reported that the Baseball/softball board is working to make improvements in the program for next spring, with additions like batting cages and nets. He also announced a couple of upcoming events, a two mile run/one mile walk that will be held on Oct 29. He added that he appreciated the public’s positive reaction and comments to recent improvements in parks' facilities, trails, and maintenance. He closed his report by updating the court on the Parks and Rec sponsored "Halloween on the Square," normally "Halloween in the Park." Several businesses are already signed up to participate and a local church is donating hot dogs, while other donors are offering chips, drinks, games, and more. The event is scheduled to start at 4pm, with vendors and businesses setting up at 4:30pm. Kids will be able to Trick-or-treat from 5pm-7pm and the event will be held on Halloween, Monday, Oct 31. He noted that vendors must bring their own tables and chairs. Darren Doyle, story and photo Edmonson County Fiscal Court met today, October 11, 2016 in the upstairs courtroom of the county courthouse. As we reported earlier, the court approved a local company to build a new website for the county to serve as a hub of all local government and organization information. In other fiscal court news, the court approved a minimum of $1 per hour pay raise for all county road employees. Starting pay will be increased from $9/hr with CDL requirements, to $10.50/hr without CDL. However, a new hire without a CDL must obtain it within six months. New hires that already have a CDL will begin pay at $11.50 per hour. Judge Executive Wil Cannon said the road department has had much difficulty with hiring new employees because of the low wage offered with a CDL requirement. He said the pay increase was needed in order to keep from being shorthanded on employees right now. The court also heard from Sheriff Shane Doyle, who updated the court on the previous drug bust on 31W a couple weeks ago. He also reported that he had two deputies that were undergoing training this week and that his office had found a police cruiser for sale in surplus from Frankfort. His office is purchasing the car with 78K miles for only $1900. It will still need to be outfitted for law enforcement use. Todd Vincent, deputy jailer, reported that the county was currently responsible for 14 inmates, two of which were on home incarceration. He also said one of their cars that had previously been repaired at Greenwood Ford had been returned to the dealership for the same existing issue.
The court also approved a signed resolution agreement for a state run program called BACKUPPS, which gives county sheriff's offices statewide jurisdiction from county to county. "We need to be able to go to other counties and have law enforcement powers," he said. "Let's say we have a deputy that goes to interview a subject in Warren County that has to do with a case here. Without jurisdiction, our deputy could see drugs in plain site but won't have the law enforcement power to make an arrest. They'd have to contact the local agency and have them do it, which by the time they got there, it would be too late." He said there would be stipulations on the statewide jurisdiction. "We'll be required to contact the other county agency and inform them of our intentions," he said. "We can't just slip into another county and be law enforcement there without letting the proper authorities know. We don't want other agencies doing that here, either." Chamber and Tourism Director Rhonda Clemmons announced that Tourism will meet on October 20th, 4:30pm. She also said the annual chamber dinner has been set for November 17, 2016 at 6pm at Mammoth Cave Hotel. She also said the recent Chamber Golf Scramble was a huge success and everyone had a great time. Finally, Clerk Kevin Alexander reported that the voting machines are set, and today is last day to register to vote in Kentucky for the upcoming election. The next fiscal court meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 24, 2016 at 9am. Edmonson Voice Staff Report The Edmonson County Fiscal Court voted to hire local company, Studio DD Media, to build a brand new website that will serve as a central hub of information for all county offices and organizations. Studio DD, a music, web, and graphic design company located in Chalybeate, has already created several local popular websites such as EdmonsonVoice.com, EdmonsonChamber.com, ECParksandRec.com, and EdmonsonSheriff.com. Over the past couple of months, Judge Executive Wil Cannon and County Clerk Kevin Alexander have exchanged ideas about the need for a site that includes not only the fiscal court and officers, but all elected officials, local utilities, and other county offices like Industrial Authority, Tourism, Chamber, Law Enforcement, and more. The only county-based sites available now are maintained through state offices in Frankfort and still have N.E. Reed listed as Judge Executive, Butch Carroll as Clerk, and B.J. Honeycutt as Sheriff. Multiple attempts have been made at a local level to have this information updated but red tape in Frankfort has prevented the changes. "We've got people that call our office each week and are just looking for general information about our county government, where to go if they need to sign up for water or electric, or other basic info," said County Clerk Alexander. "Everyone looks to the internet for information today and I feel like this is something that's greatly needed here. Right now, if you start searching for Edmonson County offices on Google, you only find information prior to 2014. That's not how we want to be represented." Studio DD owner Darren Doyle, who is also the editor of the Edmonson Voice, spoke of the importance of updated information available on the web.
"I know first hand how much this is needed. The Edmonson Voice has over 50,000 visits per week. People want information immediately and they want it to be current," he said. "When the only information available on the web is over two years old, it makes the entire county look bad and it looks like no one cares. We intend to change that by building a current site that's easy to use that will be very attractive to all ages." Chamber and Tourism Director Rhonda Clemmons said their new website, also created by Studio DD has been a major improvement in their office. "We have a wonderful website that has helped us do some great things and with the features we now have on the site like being able to pay fees and dues directly, we've really been able to move forward," she said. Doyle said the site will be easy to find and the Edmonson County Fiscal Court and the Judge Executive's office will serve as the center of the site. Within it, a reader will be able to find info or gain instant access to:
Durbin made the motion to move forward and Magistrate Mark Woosley seconded. The motion passed unanimously and the site is expected to be up and running within a month or so. To find out more about services offered at Studio DD Media, visit their website at studioddky.com.

Darren Doyle A Roundhill man is recovering today in Vanderbilt Hospital's ICU burn unit, but is in positive spirits. Devin Johnson, 22 was air lifted to the hospital yesterday when he suffered second degree burns while burning trash. We spoke with Mr. Johnson today and he said there were some inaccuracies in yesterday's story. Law enforcement and other emergency personnel gave us his incorrect age as being 24, when Mr. Johnson is actually 22 years old. Those same sources reported to us that Mr. Johnson was burned when pouring gas on the fire, which Mr. Johnson said was also incorrect. "I was burning some trash and I had an oil jug," Johnson said. "I don't know how or why, but it exploded in my hands." Johnson said he has burns on 28% percent of his upper body, including his face. He said he is scheduled to undergo skin grafts soon and hopes to be moved into a regular room, possibly today. He also said he appreciates the well wishes and prayers so far. The Edmonson Voice strives to not only report information quickly, but most of all, accurately. I personally apologized to Mr. Johnson for the incorrect information in our article from yesterday and apologize to our readers on behalf of our entire news network. --Darren Doyle, Editor, EdmonsonVoice.com. Darren Doyle, story and photos Firefighters and emergency personnel responded to a fire at the junction of KY HWY 259 and Cedar Grove Church Road last night around 10pm at Donald Ray Meredith's old store building. Thanks to quick response from firefighters, the historic building was saved. The back corner of the building suffered fire, smoke, and water damage, but the old store front and the majority of the rest of the building, now used for storage, was saved. Family members said there were reports of an older, white SUV that was seen at the location minutes before someone saw the blaze and called for help. Firefighters on scene said there was no electricity to the building and no other likely explanation for the start of the fire except arson.
"I'm afraid this is the result of somebody getting their Halloween pranks started early," said family member James Lloyd Meredith. "It's a shame that somebody would try to do this." No injuries were reported. Responding to the scene were the Kyrock and Brownsville Fire Departments, the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office, and the District 2 Constable. Edmonson Voice Staff The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office responded to an accident at Luttrell Farms on Morgantown Road yesterday around 1pm when a Bee Spring man ran off the road and crashed into the business's sign. Sheriff Shane Doyle reported that Timothy Decker, (46) said that he was traveling west on KY HWY 70 in a Chevy S-10 when he reached down for a pack of cigarettes. According to Doyle, Decker said he ran off the shoulder of the road, over corrected and crashed into the Luttrell Farm sign. According to the sheriff, witnesses at the scene said the man asked for no law enforcement to be called to the scene, but the call had already been made. Doyle said the man had slurred speech and was administered field sobriety tests. Doyle said that Decker showed multiple signs of impairment and the man eventually admitted to drinking alcohol earlier in the day. Decker was arrested and charged with:

**This story has been updated with corrected details A Roundhill man was badly burned today on E.G. Nash Road and air-lifted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Devin Johnson, (22) was apparently burning trash when an oil jug he was holding exploded, burning his upper body, including his face. The explosion caused him to suffer second degree burns on 28% of his body. Medical personnel were also concerned with the possibility of internal injuries from inhalation. No other information is available at this time. Responding to the scene was the Bear Creek Fire Department, Edmonson County Sheriff's Office, Edmonson EMS, and Air Evac. Editor's note: We have an update after speaking with the victim which can be read here : http://www.edmonsonvoice.com/-news/mondays-burn-victim-recovering-corrections-to-yesterdays-story Edmonson Voice Staff Report As of 10:15am Monday morning, Mammoth Cave National Park has announced that the river level has risen and the Green River ferry is now open to vehicles hauling trailers. For current ferry information, please call 270-758-2166. Darren Doyle, story and photos A two vehicle, head on collision sent two people to the hospital this morning around 7:30am. Emergency personnel were called to the 1700 block of Noah Bledsoe Road in Chalybeate where officials said a 2005 Dodge Ram truck driven by Cody Meinhardt, (21) of Chalybeate collided with a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, driven by Miss Logan Evans, (19) also of Chalybeate. Authorities said that the hill-crested curve along with the narrow width of the road were contributing factors in the accident. Sheriff Shane Doyle said staying along the right hand side of roads such as this is imperative, especially in curves and hills. "These are dangerous conditions anyway," he said. "Drivers have to use extra caution on these narrow roads. There is literally no room for error. " Doyle said that both vehicles met in the center of the roadway, although it appeared that the point of impact was closer to Evan's side. This portion of Noah Bledsoe Road, like many other county roads, has no shoulder stripe or center line. The sheriff's office reported that both drivers were wearing their seat belts and multiple airbags were deployed in each vehicle.
Responding to the scene in addition to the Edmonson County Sheriff's office were both the Chalybeate and Brownsville Fire Departments, as well as Edmonson EMS. The driver of each vehicle was transported to the Medical Center in Bowling Green for non-life threatening injuries. |
