Tobacco Settlement Oversight Committee Update: Meredith Reports Edmonson County to Receive $95,000 From State’s Ag Development Fund Edmonson Voice Report:
State Representative Michael Meredith has received notification from the Tobacco Settlement Agreement Fund Oversight Committee that Edmonson County will receive $95,000 in funding through the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund. The funding is specifically approved by the Kentucky Agriculture Development Board (KADB) for a County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP.) “I am happy to announce that Edmonson County will be receiving $95,000 in agriculture development funds. The legislature takes pride in the conservation of our agricultural legacy, and that is most certainly seen through our teamwork with the Agricultural Development Board and the Department of Agriculture as we continue to make strides in funding opportunities. This money will be a tremendous asset to our local agricultural operations, and I look forward to seeing how this will benefit our community,” Meredith said. This funding stems from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement fund that was established as a result of an accord that was reached in 1998 between four major tobacco product manufacturers and 46 states. The legislature created the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board. Legislators moved the KADB to the Department of Agriculture during the 2021 Regular Session to better serve the mission of the fund. Local farmers can apply for CAIP grants through the Edmonson County Conservation District by calling 270-597-2761 until October 22, 2021. It takes a sorry individual to bother someone's grave or purposely cause a disturbance in a cemetery, but stealing grave decorations from someone that's recently passed is a completely different level of sorry. The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office and the family of Tammy Cowles Cole are seeking information regarding the theft of all the decorations--yes, you read correctly--all the decorations from Tammy's grave in Hawkins Cemetery on HWY 259 (Brownsville Road) that reportedly took place sometime between 4:30 and 5:30PM on Sunday evening. Tammy was buried just Friday and family members discovered all the decorations missing yesterday. Cemetery personnel, family members, and the Sheriff's Office were stunned to learn of the report. "This is one of the most offensive things I've dealt with since I've been the Sheriff," said Shane Doyle. "We've obviously dealt with more serious crimes and charges, but this is extremely disturbing. We are going to be very aggressive in pursuing the individual or individuals who were involved in this as it is a felony to steal property from a grave." Violating graves is a Class D felony and is punishable by up to 5 years in prison. Sheriff Doyle is urging the community to help spread the word of this crime so that the subject can be arrested and that the family can have peace of mind. "It always helps when the community gets involved," he said. "Maybe you overheard something or saw something that just wasn't quite right. This family has been through enough without dealing with all of this. Our hearts go out to them and we will do our best to catch whoever did this." Tammy passed away on Monday, September 27th after a lengthy battle with COVID-19 at the age of 51. In addition to taking all the flowers and decorations, someone also walked on the grave itself, leaving several footprints. Sheriff Doyle said the investigation continues and is being led by Deputy Matt Skaggs. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to call the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office at 270-597-2157. You may remain anonymous, Sheriff Doyle said. Edmonson Voice Report: The latest state School Report Data has been released and Edmonson County Schools are above the state average in 8 out of 11 subject categories that include reading, math, science, and writing, for grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) released annual School Report Card data on Sept. 29, 2021, as required by statute and under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. Assessments were administered to Kentucky students during the spring of 2021, which was required by the United States Education Department (USED). Since the COVID-19 pandemic affected many aspects of education in the 2020-2021 school year, KDE applied for and received a waiver from federal accountability. Therefore, school accountability indicators and ratings are not part of the 2020-2021 reporting. Since no data was reported for assessment and accountability in the 2019-2020 school year, certain trends and comparisons are not reported in the School Report Card. Due to COVID-19, students faced learning disruptions, changes in the opportunities to learn, and a shortened assessment in 2021. Because of these challenges, direct comparisons of assessment data from prior years cannot be accurately made. Results for students assessed in the Edmonson County School District are below: To see the School Report Card 2020-21 assessed student data for Edmonson County Schools and the State, please visit https://www.kyschoolreportcard.com/home?year=2021.
