Peytin Manor, story and photos: Edmonson County High School students traveled to the Grayson County Technology Center on Thursday, October 1st to compete in the Tech Connect Competition against students from surrounding school districts, including Grayson, Meade, and Breckinridge counties. These students were hand-selected to attend the competition by their career and technical teachers and coordinators to represent the ECHS CTE department. Principal of Grayson County Technology Center Matt Hays stated, “Tech Connect is an opportunity for career and technical education students to gather with students from other districts and work collaboratively on the skills that they are learning at school.” Students competed in areas including welding, business and marketing, healthcare, family and consumer science, HVAC, mechanics, engineering, and electrical technology. Multiple students earned first place finishes in areas such as welding, engineering, and healthcare. 5th District Kentucky State Senator Stephen Meredith, stated, “As chairman of the Health Services Committee, I am obviously interested in what happens in health careers, but I am also passionate about other career and technical opportunities across rural Kentucky. Over the last decade, 85% of the world’s economic development has occurred in urban areas, even though rural Kentucky represents about 40% of the state’s population and receives only about 15% of that economic development. That is why I am so focused on job recruitment and workforce development. You cannot recruit industry if you do not have qualified people to fill those jobs. This is so exciting and educational for me personally. I am very excited for the future of Kentucky.”
