The rain came down in buckets this afternoon throughout the county and Brownsville seemed to get even more than that as flash flooding forced an early closure of the Edmonson County Courthouse today. Heavy thunderstorms moved into the area around just before 2PM today, and when they did, they didn't waste any time letting folks at the courthouse know what was happening.
County Treasurer Tammi Willhite, who's office is in the Judge Executive's Office, said heavy rains caused the water levels to rise through the courtyard and eventually into the courthouse.
"We had water coming in every door," she said. "We all jumped in and started trying to clean it up, but it came in so fast. It was just a mess," she said.
She said several offices inside the courthouse had standing water as a result of the rain.
"We had water coming in all over; we were all running around with mops and shop-vacs." The Edmonson County Road Department, located just east of the HWY 70 ballpark, also flooded today.
