On Saturday, October 10th, a local man was arrested for purchasing items with stolen checks. Police said that further investigation of the illegal purchases uncovered that the man, Elliot Skaggs, 31, of Chalybeate had also allegedly stolen over $10,000 worth of other items.
The Sheriff's Office said they received a report of missing ATV's, a dirt bike, racing equipment, and various parts from Wienen Motor Sports in Galana, Illinois, that they claimed were stolen by Skaggs. The items were quickly recovered from a local pawn shop in Leitchfield where Skaggs had allegedly taken them. Police said they also found stolen power tools, household items, and electronics from a burglary Skaggs was accused of committing in Chalybeate.
Skaggs was charged with Forgery -1st degree and Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument- 2nd degree, and is currently lodged in the Hart County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.
He is expected to face new charges at the next Grand Jury of Theft By Deception Over $10,000, Burglary-2nd degree, and Theft By Unlawful Taking Over $500, which are class C and class D felonies. If charged and convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 35 years in prison.
