Edmonson Voice Staff Two teens were involved in a Sunday afternoon crash on HWY 70 at 1157 Morgantown Road when the driver, Cierra Elmore, 17, of Mammoth Cave said a wasp flew into the Doge Caravan she was driving. According to law enforcement, Ms. Elmore was startled and reacted to the wasp which caused her to run off the road and crash into a utility pole. The pole was snapped in two and the van took on extensive damage. Officials said that both front airbags deployed but thankfully, neither Ms. Elmore nor her passenger, Jade Lashley, 15, of Segal were injured. Both teens were wearing their seatbelts.
The road was shut down from Mt. Zion Church Road to Higgs Road from the time of the accident around 6pm until one lane was finally opened around 10:30pm. The utility pole was carrying telephone lines and officials said more than three hours passed before Windstream arrived. Responding to the scene was the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office, Bear Creek Fire Dept, and Edmonson EMS.

I am the supervisor for Triple D Communications from the Park City Ky office. I would like to take the time to explain why it took 3 hours to respond to the accident so people will understand better what we do. I received the call from Windstream around 6:30 pm unlike me the guys that work for me lives out side of Edmonson County most of them live around the Elizabethtown area. I called my guys and informed them that we had a broke pole with cables laying across the highway and that the road was shut down. Like many of us on a weekend my guys were not home anticipating a call out they were out doing things with there families. So from the time I received the call until we arrived on site my guys had to drive from Elizabethtown area to my office in park City load the pole needed to correct the problem then from there drive to the job site to replace the pole and get the cables up out of the road. Not a lot of people see what we do and the hours that we work to repair services to customers and such and just look at the time we arrive and get finished and base there frustrations on that. We work many long hard hours to insure that we correct problems and restore services as quickly as possible. I would like to say thank you to the Edmonson County Sheriff's department as well as the state workers who stayed with us re routing traffic until we got the pole replaced and the cables up out of the highway.

A telephone company is a utility that people pay for and expect to have 24hrs a day. Even tho this was accident people shouldnt have to wait until workers get thru with whatever theyre doing on the weekend to fix, thats part of ther job. Theres no excuse for it to be three hours before somebody showed up or why windstream didnt have somebody on call 24hrs a day that was closer than etown.

I understand what you are saying we are on call 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 days a year. We all have families and do other things on weekends. like do things with our children and stuff while we are off on weekends. And when the phone rings we all answer it depending on where we are depends on how long it takes us to get there sometimes its within the hour and sometimes its a little longer. So let me ask you a question if you were us would you set at home on the weekend every weekend out of the year put your life on hold and wait for a phone call? No and we don't either. Would you get up at say 12:00, 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning like we do drive in and go do a call out? We are the contractor for Windstream and there local techs are on call just like we are but unlike them they don't replace poles and or cable they call us and we cant help where we live and if we live in etown it takes a while to drive in load the material and get to the jobsite. I live in Bee Spring but all I am is the supervisor I don't repair the pole and or cables that is the hard working guys that work for me that does that anytime of the day or night. Would you feel different if you knew that we worked on another call out In Madisonville Friday night and got home at 4:05 pm on Saturday only to have to come back out at 6:00 to work another? No you probably would not. I appreciate what you said all I am trying to do is give a glimpse of what we do and the hours we work to get the work done and that we also enjoy spending what time we can with our children and wife's

I think you misunderstood my point. I'm not throwing off on you or whatever guys do the work. the point is, people deserve better service than a three hour wait till somebody shows up to fix a pole. The electric company and water company has people that show up immediately no matter what time of day or night. if windstream or any other company don't send somebody out immediately it makes it look like they dont care and that aint right. Im sure your company is only doing what there told to do and your probably doing a good job. the point is that windstream ought to do better at taking care of ther customers. if etown is the closest place windstream has somebody to fix a pole they need to hire somebody else closer. when my bill is due i don't get to tell them that im busy doing something with my family or to far away from my checkbook to pay the bill. they expect me to pay it on time just like me and the other customers expect our phone an inernet to work.
