Mongoose,
Am I supposed to tip the carhops at Sonic? Who decides who gets tipped or not. Also, what about my barber? He charges $10 for a haircut. I figure if he needs an extra dollar he'd charge me $11. What do you say? Dear Don't Eat Yellow Snow, I hate eating in my truck, which by extension means I don't go to Sonic. Since I don't know how to answer that let me go on this tangent; why don't we tip the cook? Why don't we tip the dishwasher? Why don't we tip cashiers at Walmart? Here's what I think: the restaurant business struck gold when they came up with this deal. " Psst, lets make the customers pay for this food, drink and we won't pay the server, and put that off on the customer too, we'll be rich!" As for the barber, I've had some $5 haircuts and I've had some $15 ones, the difference between a good haircut and a bad one is about 3 days. I tip when they don't leave a line in my hair but if they leave a line, no tip and no going back. -MG

Mongoose, as a Edmonson county Master Barber, I can tell you this practice did not start in the barber shop nor do I expect tips from my customers. I charge each of my clients a fee that my market will bear even though surrounding markets are exhorbative in comparison. I suspect the tipping practice began during the 60/70's when men wore long hair and sought out beuticians instead of barbers.
