Dear Mongoose,
My wife loves onions and I can't stand them. She puts them on everything and eats them late at night. I can't stand the smell of them and I can't stand to smell her when she eats them. I've tried everything to try to get her to stop eating them all the time. I've been nice, I've begged, I've got mad, yelled, everything. All she does is laugh at me. I never heard of no one getting a divorce over onions but I've been thinking about it. It's driving me crazy. What would you do? Dear Ooh Ooh That Smell, I don't suppose I've ever heard of a divorce over onions but plenty of marriages end because a spouse doesn't respect the other. I can't tell just how serious this is from your letter alone, but I can tell you this: marriage and relationships are about compromise. You think you know someone until you marry them...All the little quirks and imperfections come to light (yours did, too). If you really believe this is hindering your marriage, sit down and talk this thing out, let her know this really bothers you and if she loves and respects you, (assuming you love and respect her, too) then you'll get something worked out. If not, I guess she picks onions over you. P.S. Have you ever tried asking her to brush her teeth before bed? Altoids and gum also work wonders. -MG
