Dear Mongoose,
I have two grandkids that each play different sports. They're not superstars but are pretty good and get their share of playing time. My husband and I have all but stopped going to their games because my son-in-law (their dad) is constantly screaming at either them, the refs, or even other fans from the seats. He's been publicly warned multiple times and he's been thrown out of two games that I can remember. We want to support our grandkids, but it's embarrassing for all of us. How do I say something to him without causing a bench-clearing brawl? Dear Bobby Knight's in-laws, Let me guess, your son in law was the next Cy Young winner till he blew his knee out in Community College. There is a time and place for everything. Sounds like it's time, the place needs to be your dinner table or a comparable, comfortable private place with you, Coach Knight and your daughter in a closed door session. If your daughter has any sense she probably feels the same and they are your grandkids, you can always use the excuse you are only looking out for their best interest. Be open, honest and kind but watch for flying chairs. We'll See Ya, Mongoose
