What About This New Gas Plant?

Dear Mongoose,
I'm very concerned about the new Hellervik Gas Plant coming near my home. I live in the area and we're trying to get this shut down. Do you think they should be here?

Ever heard the old saying, "you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube?" That's sort of what Edmonson County has with this gas plant. From what I can read here in the Voice, it doesn't seems like the company has tried to keep anything a secret. How exactly are you trying "to get this shut down?" and with whom? While I wouldn't be too happy if some sort of gas plant was built near my home, I can tell you if I was serious about keeping them away, I'd have been jumping up and down at the very mention of a gas plant, which was a long time ago. Don't get me wrong, the folks out on Louisville Road have just as much right to oppose the plant as Hellervik has putting it up. The problem is, everyone has sat on their hands while these guys have talked about doing this, and now it's too late, as there are no industrial zoning laws in the county, and the construction has begun. Instead of wanting to shut these guys down and starting petitions and such, you should be asking your magistrates and your judge executive why there isn't proper zoning here. They said they were going to have this implemented when this whole Rocky Hill thing happened, but instead, they didn't, and here we are. No one can legally keep Hellervik out of your backyard if they own the land, or a Walmart, strip club, or motocross track without industrial zoning. According to what I've read, this Hellervik bunch claims everything they're doing is legal and safe, so unless they turn out to be a bunch of liars that only care about money, you can't really be mad at them. Don't hate the player, hate the game...and make sure your magistrates are awake during fiscal court...it's kind of important.
