by Beth Cook, Mammoth Cave Transplants: Is it safe yet? This is a question all of us gardeners ask ourselves when Spring begins and we have our first few days of warm weather. We all have an impulse to garden and plant, but it’s just not safe for some of the more tender plants until the threat of frost has passed. So we begin by getting our beds and landscapes ready, we keep planning and waiting very impatiently for the all clear. Here in south central Kentucky it is best to wait until around the first of May to do any major planting of flowers. Well folks that time is upon us! In all of the dreaming and planning you have done over winter, have you decided what flowers you are going to plant and where? A big question is how much time do you want to devote to your blooming beauties? If you plant them in the ground, they require less care. When planting in pots or planters they require a little extra attention. You also need to keep in mind that not all flowers are the same. Some varieties can handle the hot sun and dry conditions, while others are very fragile and need only the morning sun. It is a good idea to evaluate how much sun your bed gets or where you will hang or set potted plants. Determine whether or not it gets morning sun or afternoon sun.
Another thing to keep in mind is your soil condition. Is it well drained, or stay fairly moist? Some plants, like Vinca, like hot dry locations and do not require a lot of watering. Also what will be the size at the plants maturity? Carefully read the tag supplied with the plant at the time of purchase for any particulars that might apply to the variety you are planting. Once you have determined these things, it will help you in your plant selection. Now you have your plants, how do you plant them? If you have decided you are putting them in a bed, it is a good idea to enhance your soil with some organic material like peat moss, composted manure, or organic soil. Mix those well into your soil. This is also a good time to add a balanced, timed-release fertilizer to get your plants off to a good start. If you are planting in pots and planters, we suggest a planting medium that already has time release fertilizer in it, like Miracle Grow potting mix. If you choose a medium without fertilizer in it, you can always use a liquid fertilizer for proper nutrition. Also planting in containers requires more watering than those planted in beds. There will be a Ladies' Day Out & Mother’s Day event on April 21st from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Byrd Activity Center. There will be several local vendors and a basket will be raffled off with proceeds going to benefit the family of Amy Logsdon. Tickets for the basket will be $5.

EC Winter Guard Named South Eastern U.S. Bronze Medalists and State Silver Medalists submitted article: It was a day of celebration last Saturday, April 7th 2018 for the Edmonson County Winter Guard at the South Eastern Color Guard (SCGC) Circuit Championships at E. A. Diddle Arena on Western Kentucky University’s Campus in Bowling Green, KY. In championship competition, which included winter guards from Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi, the Edmonson County Winter Guard came home as South Eastern U.S. Bronze Medalists and State Silver Medalists. With an all-time high EC score of 82.5, EC Guard Members walked the red carpet in front of thousands of spectators to receive their medals and trophy during the awards ceremony. Winter Guard takes the equipment most commonly seen in outdoor color guard – flags, sabers, and mock rifles – and brings the action indoors to gymnasiums and professional sporting arenas. When these elements are combined with interpretive dance, vivid storytelling and imaginative costumes, what results are dynamic, athletic, and often theatrical performances.
The Edmonson County Winter Guard consists of 14 members: Captains - Emma Lindsey, Kaley Hartz, and Destiny Holt, Team Members – Elle Madison, Chloe Jones, Haley Lindsey, Elijah Merryman, Summer Clubb, Jayla Pate, Audrey Pierce, Skylyn Arms, Shaw’nee Brooks, Savanah Porter, and Gaby Rumsey. They are under the direction of Autumn Berry and John Woods II, with instructors Amy Tanner, Jesse Katzman, and Emily Vincent. “This is the first full competitive season for the EC Winter Guard and to medal in their first season of competition is absolutely amazing,” said Director John Woods. The EC Winter Guard would like to thank all their supporters and sponsors that have helped throughout the season. Without the community’s support the program would not have the needed equipment to succeed. “I can’t wait to see the future of this program and the progress we continue to make during Marching season into next winter season," said Director Autumn Berry. "Thank you to all that have freely given up their time to help with loading and unloading our props, driving our equipment, and feeding the Guard. A lot of people went into this group having the opportunity to receive those medals. Truly thank you to all.” Check out this local listing from Sanders and Sanders Auction and Realty: click on the flyer for all the listing photos.
Dreary, Cold Weather Is No Match For Fresh, Hot Food Darren Doyle, story and photos: Light, wet snow fell in Brownsville on Saturday morning April 7th, but it wasn't enough to keep folks away from attending the Edmonson County Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and grand opening of Brownsville's newest restaurant, Sportsman's Grill, owned by Josh Casey. A large crowd was hungry and ready to go as soon as the ribbon dropped from Casey's scissors earlier today. While they weren't officially open for business until 11am, the cook, kitchen, and waiting staff was running on all cylinders to take care of the customers that had filled the restaurant which was formerly Pizza-n-Paradise. "We were nervous that the weather would keep people away this morning, but we were so happy to see this crowd come out and support us today," said Casey. "As we said before, we want to provide another family-friendly option here in town and we're very excited to finally be open for business." Rhonda Clemmons, Chamber of Commerce Director, was pleased with the large turnout at the event.
"Just like Josh, we didn't know what the weather would hold, but it turns out that cold weather is no match for hot food," she said with a laugh. "We're so happy to see another business in Brownsville open and we're glad that so many members of the community attended today's ribbon cutting. We wish Josh and his staff nothing but success and we encourage everyone to support Sportsman's Grill." You can find out more by visiting the Sportsman's Grill Facebook Page by clicking here. Grand Opening Of Sportsman's Grill Scheduled For This Week Darren Doyle, story and photos: Local businessman Josh Casey is just days away from opening the doors of Brownsville's newest restaurant, "Sportsman's Grill," which is located in the former Pizza-N-Paradise location on South Main Street. Casey is the owner of C&C Firearms, a popular gun and sporting goods store that first opened in 2012. So what do guns have to do with good food? Well, we're not exactly sure, but Josh is no stranger to either one, as he'll tell you. "I'm a fan of food, too," he said with a grin. "The idea of opening a new restaurant here in town all started with my desire for a new local place to eat. So instead of complaining about how Brownsville needs this or that, my opinion is that it's better to spend that energy trying to make a difference." Sportsman's Grill will feature classic American food, like burgers, sandwiches, and chicken, as well as items like fish-n-chips, fried green tomatoes, and Black Rifle Coffee, which is also sold at his sporting goods store across the street. The grill also offers a complete breakfast menu with all the classic favorites like pancakes, eggs and bacon, biscuits and gravy, and more. Hungry yet? We thought so... With the name, the decor and theme is much of what you'd expect, but certainly not over the top. Mounted deer, fish, and other wildlife are plentiful inside, and they go well with the tan and green color scheme, tile floor, and the corrugated metal and wooden accents. The black vinyl, diner-style booths are also a nice touch.
"I'm proud to be from a conservative area where people love the outdoors," Casey said. "This restaurant is a way to combine so many things that people in this area enjoy. People here love to fish and hunt, they're patriotic, they support law enforcement, and they love food, so why not bring them all together?" Not a hunter or fisher? Josh says that's ok, too. "We're a place that welcomes the whole family," he said. "We're confident our outdoorsmen will feel at home here, but so will mom, the kids, the grandparents, and anyone else. It's just a good 'ol southern, classic American restaurant in a small town." For now, Casey plans to split his time between running the gun store and overseeing the restaurant. Sportsman's Grill is scheduled to hold a community-wide ribbon cutting on Saturday, April 7th at 10:30am, which will also serve as their grand opening. The restaurant will officially open for business at 11am that day. Regular business hours will be Monday through Saturday, 6am to 8pm, closed on Sundays. The restaurant will provide full breakfast, lunch, and dinner entrees. Visit their Facebook Page to stay updated on everything going on at the grill or give them a call, 270-597-1115. |
