Darren Doyle, story:
Longtime Edmonson County softball coach James "Woody" Woodcock was honored last night at the HWY 70 ballpark before Tuesday's league games as he was recognized on field during the ceremony as his wife, son, and daughter-in-law stood with him. Coach Woodcock began his career playing baseball at Valley High in Louisville. After high school, he played for various leagues and organizations until he came to Edmonson County High School as a teacher in 1981. He started his impressive high school softball coaching career at ECHS in 1985 when he became the first head coach of Lady Cat Softball and remained there until 2002. Under Woody's leadership, the Lady Cats enjoyed a record of 249-136 (.546), four district championships--including 1993's team that also went on to be regional champions and on to the KHSAA State Tournament. The Lady Cats were also 1996 sectional winners, allowing them another trip to the State Tournament. Woody also led the initiative to construct the current Lady Cat Softball complex during 1999-2000, completing much of the work himself. Until that time, Lady Cat Softball competed on the county fields at HWY 70 ballpark. The ceremony was organized by the Edmonson County Little League Baseball/Softball Board. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to attend the 2017 Edmonson County Lady Cat Basketball Camp at ECHS. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and certificate and winners will receive awards. The camp is instructed by ECHS Lady Cat coaches and players. Check the form for all the details, print, and send along with payment.
Edmonson Voice Staff Report:
The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 25th annual national food drive on Saturday, May 13. The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the country’s largest single-day food drive, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need in the community. Customers in Auburn, Bowling Green, Brownsville, Cave City, Franklin, Glasgow, Morgantown, Scottsville, and Smiths Grove leave their donation of non-perishable goods next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail on Saturday, May 13. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes and distribute them to local food agencies. All donations will stay in the county in which they are collected. Visit www.nalc.org/food to learn more. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive and is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. With the economic struggles many Americans face, the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive is as critical as ever. Not only do millions of Americans go hungry, organizations that help them are in need of replenishments. Hunger affects about 50 million people around the country, including millions of children, senior citizens and veterans. Pantry shelves filled up through winter-holiday generosity often are bare by late spring. And, with most school meal programs suspended during summer months, millions of children must find alternate sources of nutrition. Letter carriers see these struggles in the communities they serve, and they believe it’s important to do what they can to help. On Saturday, May 13, as they deliver mail, the nation’s 175,000 letter carriers will collect donations left by residents near their mailboxes. People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag—paper or plastic—containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, peanut butter, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on that Saturday. Letter carriers will take that food to local food banks, pantries or shelters. Several national partners are assisting the NALC in the food drive: the U.S. Postal Service, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association (NRLCA), the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), Valpak, United Way Worldwide, the AFL-CIO, the AARP Foundation and Valassis. Since the first national Food Drive in 1993, the Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food; last year’s drive brought in a record 80 million pounds of food. People who have questions about the drive in their area should ask their letter carrier, contact their local post office, or go to nalc.org/food, facebook.com/StampOutHunger or twitter.com/StampOutHunger. Over 90 people registered for the event where Kyrock Elementary, South Edmonson Elementary students, and family members could walk/run their choice of number of laps on the ECHS track. Students, who could earn Recess Walking Club points by participating in the event, proudly rang a bell each time they completed a mile on the track. Once participants completed their laps, they visited activity stations (set up by a group of WKU Physical Education majors) that included hula hoops, jump ropes, beanbag toss, ball toss and a push-up station where students could challenge their parent/guardian to a pushup contest. Nutrition related, hands-on activities that educated students on healthy snack choices accompanied the healthy snack table where grapes, bananas, carrots, snack bags and bottled water were provided.
