​The Edmonson County Chamber of Commerce wishes to announce a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, November 2 at 5:30 PM at the new River Hill  location of Jacob’s Home Furnishings.

What started as a hobby in a garage fifteen years ago has turned into a successful business for an Edmonson county family. Jeff and Laura Jacobs moved their family run custom built log furniture store, Jacob’s Log Furniture, to Lindseyville back in 2010. Jeff and his team’s craftmanship received some national notoriety and could be found in several houses and cabins around the area and throughout the country.  Tragedy struck in January 2015 when the store and workshop were lost to an electrical fire. Jeff and Laura Decided to rebuild and stay in Edmonson County. They also took the gamble of expanding the operations to include mattresses and upholstered furniture along with their custom builds. Opening their doors to Jacobs Home Furnishings in December of 2015.
 
The community and surrounding area really supported their decision to expand into the retail furniture business. They’ve kept the doors turning and the delivery truck rolling. Three years have passed and on cusp of that anniversary they have outgrown their current location and are relocating the top of River Hill, at 1400 HWY 259N in Brownsville, across from Laura’s Hilltop Restaurant.
 
The Jacobs have renovated and rejuvenated a vacant commercial building and created a gorgeous showroom. One local resident that got a sneak peek stated, “I’d have never guessed the new location was once an old dollar store!” The relocation will almost triple their showroom space. Allowing them to show more than Twice the merchandise. Jacobs Home Furnishings will now be displaying: 3 Name Brands of Mattresses, over 20 different selections. 6 Brands of Upholstery, over 20 Sofa sets and over 50 recliners. New dining and bedroom furniture and tuns of new accent pieces and household accessories. Jacobs Home Furnishings proudly boast that over 80% of the furniture displayed is made in the USA. The winter draw does not have as much of an affect on fish as we may think.  Moving water creates current and current tends to put fish on the downstream side of cover.  Channel bends create good current breaks.

 A spinnerbait or swim jig fished 5 to 10 feet deep along chunk rock catches some good bass. 

​ Crappie have been caught anywhere from 8 to 15 feet.  As the lake falls, look for them to move almost daily. They don't go far, but they do move to the next piece of cover to their liking. Good luck this weekend.

On October 12, 2018 to October 13, 2018, members of Edmonson County Boy Scout Troop 597 attended Patriot Games at Fort Knox and camped out. The scouts were able to experience various weather conditions. They got to meet and talk to soldiers and got non-stamped pennies. The scouts got to see a K-9 demonstration to include the K-9 attacking a criminal.

​ The scouts participated in patrol games where they learned how to tie and latch certain knots, and got to learn how to coil and throw a rope. The Scouts said one most fun things they did was participate in a frame game that consist of a person standing on the middle of a triangle wall frame and the scouts used teamwork to move it.  The scouts all thought it was a good time, good food, good experience and the event was attended by new and seasoned scouts.  Edmonson County Boy Scout Troop is chartered by the Edmonson County Lions Club.

​A new feature added to the Goddard Tournament was the lightning round competition.  Students competed in quick recall in a single subject, rather than a variety of subjects.  Jonas Miller of ECMS won the social studies lightning round competition. Evy Bolton competed as a finalist in the language arts competition.  

Coach Greg Grey stated, “We had a great opening week for our season.  Everyone on our team gained some playing time and valuable experience in our opening games.  We have a long way to go to achieve our goals for this year, but the coaches and players are looking forward to a great season.”

Edmonson County native Earl Talley took home top honors in the NHRA Southeast Division Summit Racing Series Finals on October 7, besting several other drivers on his way to a Sportsman Class Championship.  The win qualifies him for a berth in the Summit National Championship in Pomona, California next month.
Talley, a long-time drag racer, has won multiple points championships and events at his local track (Beech Bend Raceway), but this is the first NHRA Divisional title he has ever collected.  Ironically, he qualified for the Southeast Division (Division 2) event with points he accumulated at Music City Raceway in Nashville, Tennessee. 

Silver Dollar Motorsports Park in Reynolds, Georgia hosted the Division 2 event and several rounds of “bracket” racing determined an eventual winner.  Bracket racing is a style of drag racing that handicaps matchups to allow driver reaction time and predictably consistent vehicles to be more important in determining winners than quickness of the vehicles alone.  Slower vehicles (according to elapsed time, or ET) are given a head start during each race.  Racers must predict the ET their vehicles will run (called a dial-in) and must have a good reaction time at the starting line (measured in fractions of a second) to win.  If a driver’s vehicle runs faster than its dial-in or the driver leaves the starting line too early, the driver is disqualified for that round of racing.  The Sportsman class at the Division 2 event required contestants to race for 1/8 mile while adhering to these rules.

​Talley had to advance his 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 through 6 rounds of head-to-head racing to win the event and was awarded a “bye” (automatic advance) in the quarterfinals as the result of having the best winning reaction time (.026) in the previous round.  He won the final round of the weekend by defeating Tracy Sikes (representing Rockingham, North Carolina) with a .003 reaction time and by posting an ET of 7.730 – a number that was an identical match to his car’s dial-in.

Talley is a 1986 graduate of Edmonson County High School and now resides in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Julie Kiser of Louisville Road, Bowling Green, has been named the 2017 Master Conservationist for Edmonson County. The Master Conservationist Award recognizes farmers who have completed more than 90 percent of their conservation plan to protect the soil, air, and water on their farm, which also protects the environment of their community.

Mark Meeks of Oak Hill Road, was named the 2017 Outstanding Cooperator for Edmonson County. The Outstanding Cooperator award is awarded to farmers who have completed their Master Conservationist criteria and have continued their commitment to protect the environment.

"The Edmonson County Conservation District would like to congratulate both Ms. Kiser and Mr. Meeks on their achievements," the ECCD said in a written statement. "Ms. Kiser was not available to come to our meeting, but both she and Mr. Meeks were awarded a certificate, a sign for their farm, and a paperweight commemorating the event."

 The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Kentucky is encouraging landowners, farmers and producers to visit their local NRCS office now to receive information and apply for conservation technical assistance and possible funding opportunities.

​The application process for NRCS’s conservation programs is continuous, but funding selections for specific programs are made throughout the year. For the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), Kentucky NRCS has announced that applications for assistance for seasonal high tunnels, on-farm energy, certified or transitioning to organic, and conservation activity plans received by November 2, 2018, will be evaluated and contracts will be entered by January 31, 2019.

Applications for practices to treat resource concerns not covered above will be accepted, but those applications will not be processed until after February 2019. A later cutoff date will be identified for these applications and will be posted on the Kentucky NRCS website.
