New Facility Now Open Next To Alford's Pharmacy

A+ Family Healthcare is now open next to Alford's Pharmacy, and is managed by Heather Parsley, APRN.
Darren Doyle, story and photos:
A new medical facility has opened in Brownsville and is now accepting new patients. "A+ Family Healthcare" is now open in the Main Street Center next door to Alford's Pharmacy and Drive Thru.

According to Heather Parsley, APRN, who manages the clinic, the facility will be a primary care office that will cater to all healthcare needs. Parsley brings years of experience to the clinic and hopes that patients will feel at home in their Brownsville office by the local faces employed there.

According to Parsley, the opportunity for another local clinic was presented to her back in March and through a local team effort, the new business opened up six months later.

"My love has always been primary care," she said. "So many people are not established with a regular primary care practice and that's what we want to provide here."

Parsley is no stranger to Edmonson County even though she is originally from the Glasgow area. She's been married to her husband, Brian, for nearly 20 years and has attended church locally for a long period of time. A WKU Nursing School graduate, she's also previously worked at Caverna Primary Care Clinic, managing chronic disease in addition to being employed at Medical Center Urgent Care.

"Our goal is listen to patients, make the correct diagnosis, and get our patients on the right track with the proper treatment," she said.

The facility will manage acute and chronic illnesses, offer onsite x-rays, and provide all basic healthcare needs, including physicals.

Also working at the clinic is Ashley Graham, radiology tech and office manager, part-time radiology tech Lindsey Skaggs, and Susie Estes, receptionist.

The clinic will be open M-F 8am-5pm, closed 12-1pm for lunch.
Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, and closed noon to 1pm for lunch. Parsley said that making appointments during business hours are the most efficient way to be seen. They've just launched their Facebook page which Parsley said will be a great place to keep track of the latest happenings and where folks might even stumble upon an occasional giveaway.

"We're planning a local Chamber of Commerce grand opening sometime in the near future," she said. "We also appreciate everyone's patience as our new signage is under construction. We're so excited to be here and we look forward to being part of our Edmonson County community."

The clinic is 100% locally owned and operated.

You can call the clinic during regular business hours at (270) 975-4050.

Edmonson Voice Staff Report:
Youngsters enjoyed hot pancakes on Saturday at South Edmonson at the annual Breakfast with Santa, but the delicious food finished second behind the man of the hour, which was Santa Claus himself.

Kids of all ages sat in Santa's lap, made their Christmas requests, and took photos with the jolly old elf as SEES faculty, staff, administration, and other volunteers cooked pancakes and participated in several activities with the kids.

"Ho, Ho, Ho! What a great day with all our friends at South Edmonson on Saturday," said Santa. "I'll be around Edmonson County for the next couple weeks," he added. "I'm making my list and checking it twice!"

The annual event is one of the many fundraisers that SEES hosts for their PTO. Santa Claus has been taking time out of his busy schedule to visit several Edmonson County places around Christmas for the last several years.

Santa is scheduled to stop at Walden's BBQ this Saturday, Dec 9th, from 4pm-6pm. Click here for more.

Home Grown Notions: Caring For Live Christmas Trees

The Thanksgiving holiday is over for many of us and we are all anxious to dive in and get ready for Christmas. Many of us start by putting up our trees to kickoff the holiday season. Over the years we have become accustomed to using artificial trees, but there are still some that go the more traditional route of a REAL LIVE Christmas tree. If you decide to go this route, you can choose a cut or balled and burlap tree. Cut trees require a bit more care and more water than the balled and burlap, but whichever type you decide is the best fit for your home, here is a few tips to care for your live tree during the holiday season.

  • Keep your tree sheltered in an unheated area like a porch or garage until you are ready to decorate.
  • Keep your live tree in the house for as short time as possible.
  • If balled and burlap, go ahead and dig your hole that you will be planting it in after Christmas and be sure to save your dirt you removed.
  • If cut, keep it in a bucket of water until you are ready to bring inside.
  • Keep balled and burlap plenty moist but not soggy.
  • When you are ready to set up your tree, make a new cut ½ cut up from the original.
  • Make sure your stand will fit the diameter of your tree. Don’t shave any bark from the tree. The outer bark is what absorbs water the best.
  • For cut trees, make sure your tree stand can hold enough water for your tree. (Tree trunk of 4 inches diameter, tree stand should hold 4qts of water)
  • The first day, a cut tree will absorb approximately about a gallon of water and each day forward a quart or more.
  • Keep the stand filled with water so the cut trunk does not dry out. A seal of sap will cover it in 4-6 hours of no water. Then you will have to make a new cut.
  • For Balled and burlap, keep the dirt ball plenty moist but not too soggy.

Keeping your live tree watered is very crucial in caring for your live Christmas tree to keep it looking and smelling good. Water prevents the needles from drying out and dropping. If the tree and needles dry out, this causes the tree to be a fire hazard. You can also spray or have your tree sprayed with a fire retardant for extra precaution. A fresh and well maintained tree will keep it looking great and also be less of a fire risk.

Make sure at night to unplug your lights on your tree. Also be sure to keep away from all heat sources.  After you are finished with your tree, plant your balled and burlap as soon as possible. For your cut trees, you can find a local recycling program to dispose of your tree. Enjoy your live tree and Happy Decorating from Mammoth Cave Transplants!
