The Edmonson County Schools’ Local Planning Committee will conduct PUBLIC FORUM at 5:30 PM CDT on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the Edmonson County Board of Education, 100 Wildcat Way, Edmonson, Kentucky 42210. These community suggestions or recommendations will be closely monitored by the Local Planning Committee in the development of an amendment to the District Facility Plan for the Edmonson County Schools. The Public Forum will be immediately followed by a meeting of the Edmonson County Local Planning Committee. Darren Doyle, story: Local officials, county government offices, and area businesses got a special treat today from both South Edmonson Elementary and Kyrock Elementary Choirs as they performed Christmas music in the Edmonson County Community Center. The SEES Bulldog Choir, led by Mrs. Jessica Doyle, and the Kyrock Blackhawk Choir, led by Mrs. Laura Ashley, both performed Christmas songs and carols with the two choirs combined in various Brownsville locations today. Local officials spoke about how they all enjoyed the performance. "It was just a great job all the way around," said County Clerk Kevin Alexander. "These kids should be recognized for such a great job. It brought joy to the Community Center." County Judge/Executive Scott Lindsey said the kids coming to sing is always a highlight to the holiday season. "We loved having the Bulldog Choir and the Blackhawk Choir sing for us today," he said. "They definitely brought a little of the Christmas spirit with them. It was truly a blessing and we appreciate them so much for stopping by and singing for us."
County PVA Kyle White said the kids did a wonderful job. "I'm so proud of the practice time and dedication the kids put in," he added. " They are a talented group and their carols warmed our hearts." Mrs. Jessica Doyle said today was a first, with the combination of the SEES and Kyrock Choirs. "The smiles on the faces of everyone made it all worth it," she said. "The students were especially touched by singing to the residents at the nursing home." In addition to the Community Center, the kids also made stops at Bank of Edmonson County, The Edmonson Center nursing home facility, the EC Board of Education, Cee Bee Food Store, all the other local schools, McReynolds Physical Therapy, and R&R Heating and Air Conditioning. The kids performed a mix of standard Christmas songs and carols. There will be a free countywide Christmas Choir concert on Thursday, December 19th at 6PM in the ECHS auditorium. Currently, all local schools in the county have choirs and will perform Thursday night. Darren Doyle, story: The Edmonson County Lions Club has celebrated the success of the 68th Annual Edmonson County Lions Club Fair, not by bragging, but by sharing it with the local and extended community. Even though providing the community with the best fair and carnival possible is their priority event, their work doesn't start and end there. They recently shared some of their work to let local folks know more about what they do. In late September, Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc throughout the southeast and especially in areas of North Carolina. The Lions Club partnered with Greg Vincent of Carroll Ridge Woodworking to raise awareness and collect items needed within those areas of devastation. "Our community responded by filling a large, enclosed trailer load of supplies and items that were delivered to rural North Carolina along with over $2,500 in monetary donations," Lions Club member Jay Holland told the Edmonson Voice. "Those folks were very thankful and appreciative of our efforts." On November 16th, the Lions Club, along with other local businesses and organizations, coordinated a food drive to benefit the Senior Food Pantry in Edmonson County, which was held at Cee Bee Food Store in Brownsville.
"Generosity was on full display and a truck and trailer load was filled for our senior citizens in need," Holland said. "Over $2,000 was also presented to the pantry to use as needed for our community." Recently, the Lions Club delivered around 30 winter coats to benefit each child enrolled in the Edmonson County Head Start program located in Brownsville. "The goal of the Winter Coat Drive is that every head start child receives a new coat to stay warm this winter," said Holland. "Leo the Lion inspected every coat for each child and all coats were warm and ready." In addition, the Lions Club as a whole has always worked to provide better vision services for kids. Free vision screenings along with sponsoring eyeglasses for youth & adults will continue to be a main focus entering 2025, the Lions Club said "If you know of anyone needing eye care or eyeglasses in Edmonson County, please contact a Lions Club member. There is an application process and club approval must be granted to receive this care, but we encourage anyone in need to fill out the application and start the process to better vision." The Edmonson County Lions Club was the recipient of the Edmonson County Chamber of Commerce's "Servant of the Year" for 2024. They recently announced a $100K state grant that they will use in part to completely remodel the main building at the fairgrounds into a new facility that will used as office space, events, and new restroom facilities. The Lions Club is also accepting new membership for 2025. Contact a Lions Club member for more. Edmonson Voice Report: On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Brownsville VFW Post 6937 presented community service awards to four Edmonson County public servants. Following a catered dinner at the Heritage Centre in Brownsville, Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest Winner Samantha Ulm read her patriotic paper and Voice Of Democracy Speech winner Brayden Johnson gave a rendition of his winning speech, both of which set the tone for the community service awards which followed. The awards were presented by Post Commander Edwin Vincent. Teacher of the Year went to South Edmonson Elementary School music teacher Jessica Doyle. Jessica was nominated by Post member Ray Durbin who noted her significant contributions throughout the year. It was also announced that Mrs. Doyle had been selected for submission, along with one other VFW 5th District teacher, to State VFW Headquarters for consideration for recognition at that level. EMT of the Year, Ashley Ritter, was nominated by EMS Director Keith Sanders. Ashley is a licensed Paramedic whose work was lauded by several of her former ambulance patients present in the audience. In her acceptance of the award, Ashley expressed how much she loved living and working with the citizens of Edmonson County. Ashley has also been selected as the VFW 5th District EMT of the Year and her nomination package has been forwarded to VFW State Headquarters for consideration there also. Police Officer of the Year, Deputy Truman Waddell, was nominated by Edmonson County Sheriff James Vincent for his response to a March 2024 domestic dispute. Deputy Waddell is credited with isolating an aggressive knife-armed subject while removing a threatened citizen to safety without resorting to further violence, according to the sheriff's office. Deputy Waddell, a recent DOCJT Law Enforcement Academy graduate was previously awarded Fireman of the Year for his volunteer service in that public service arena. Like Jessica and Ashley, Truman has also been selected at VFW 5th District and his package has been forwarded to State Headquarters.
The Firefighter of the Year award went to Chalybeate Fire Department Captain Pete Tarrantino, Jr who was nominated by Fire Chief Daniel Johnson. All of our county fire fighters serve as volunteers but in this case, Captain Tarrantino also serves as professional firefighter in Owensboro. Pete has been selected as the 5th VFW District Fire Fighter of the Year and like our other awardees, his package has been forwarded to State Headquarters. "To all of the above honorees, thank you for your accomplishments and your service to our community," said VFW Post 6937 said in a released statement. "We are proud to have you as friends and neighbors." Edmonson Voice Report:

Organization Celebrates Success With New Plans for 2025 Darren Doyle, story and photos: The Edmonson County Lions Club had much to celebrate last night as they gathered with all the sponsors for a thank you dinner which helped them make the 2024 fair an overwhelming success. Held at the Hidden Homestead event venue on Thursday, December 5, 2024, the Lions Club made several recognitions, honored all this year's sponsors, and celebrated the good news of receiving a $100,000 grant that will be used to remodel and expand the current structure simply known as the "building." Coming off the momentum of this year's fair and receiving the 2024 Edmonson County Chamber of Commerce Servant of the Year Award earlier in the week, it was the perfect time for last night's event. Lions Club Fair Board Chairman Donnie Turley, who was a driving force behind the completely revamped fair in 2023 and '24, spoke about the new direction that the fair had gone. He thanked the community for all their help and positive feedback that has helped their new vision. "We couldn't have done it without you and we're truly grateful for all that you've done to help make this a success," he said. District 19 State Representative and Lions Club Member Michael Meredith made the announcement last night about the grant that came as a shock to several. Rep. Meredith said that $750K was allocated for state fair boards across KY in 2024, with the maximum amount for one board being $100K, which Edmonson County received. "In late October, my friend, our Ag Commissioner Jonathan Shell contacted me to let me know that Edmonson County, the fair board would be receiving the maximum grant of $100,000," Meredith announced to the crowd. "That award became official with a November 13th press release from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, and Edmonson County, out of those nine counties that were awarded, Edmonson County was one of four across the state that got the full $100,000 grant. When I spoke to Commissioner Shell, he told me that he had reviewed every single one of the 32 qualifying applications that were turned in personally, and though Edmonson County would have had a good chance to get a grant award because we had never received one in the past, there was not a single grant package that could compare to the package that was put together by the members of the Edmonson County Lions Club that who worked on this project." Meredith also credited Lions Club members Jay Holland and Donnie Turley for presenting their needs to the state and completing the grant funding request process. Turley and Lions Club President Jimmie Duvall then unveiled artist's renderings of the new and improved facility, that while the main structure will remain in place, the remodel and expansion will turn it into a brand new facility.
The building will be expanded with space large enough to hold pageants at the fair grounds, office space, meeting areas, new restrooms, and a basic new 'headquarters' for the Lions Club and Fair Grounds, Turley said. The total project is expected to cost around $150,000. According to the KY Department of Agriculture, any incorporated fair board in Kentucky may apply with the State Aid to Local Agricultural Fairs Program for grants in the amount of $10,000-$100,000. Each grant will fund 75 percent of the total cost of the project, with the local fair board matching the other 25 percent. Each project must be started within 90 days of the date the project was awarded and must be completed within nine months. Turley said construction is planned to begin in January of 2025 with completion coming before the 2025 fair. Toys, Gifts, Shoes and More Provided For Edmonson County Families Loads of toys, gifts, shoes, and more are loaded in the Heritage Centre in Brownsville on December 1, 2024 from the annual Santa's Helping Hands volunteer shopping day to benefit local families during the holidays. Darren Doyle, story: Santa’s Helping Hands recently gathered up volunteers to help with the shopping and organization of nearly $70K worth of items that will directly benefit Edmonson County families for the 2024 holiday season. According to SHH co-founder Mark Wardlow, the shopping started on Monday, November 25th at Shoe Carnival in Bowling Green where nearly $9K was spent on 271 pair of shoes. "Shoe Carnival has been giving us great deals for 20 years now," Wardlow said, who has been very open with the places where items are normally purchased each year and has built great working relationships with those retailers, such as Shoe Carnival. While nearly 300 pairs of shoes is an impressive haul, the big shopping day was on Sunday, December first. "We were so blessed with a lot of support from Edmonson County, where probably around 75-80 people showed up to help shop at Walmart on Morgantown Road," he said. "We started handing out cards with information on clothing, toys & specifics around 3PM and were loaded up and headed home by 6:30. Walmart had four registers going and plenty of extra help for us. When the final bag was loaded, the total was $57,775." Wardlow said when their team arrived back in Brownsville at the Heritage Centre, the space from which was donated by Robbie and Andrea Brantley, they were met with other teams--ECHS Wildcat Baseball and ECMS Basketball, who helped unload the bags of gifts.
"This has become a routine for us and we appreciate the support from our local athletes, it truly makes our job so much easier." While this year's total of gift-giving is estimated to be around $68K, Wardlow says that's not all, as the group works year round to help those in EC who are in need. "Throughout 2024 we also purchased lots of clothing, beds, shoes, and food for families dealing with house fires, hardships, or emergencies. We also provided several gas cards, fast food cards and Cee Bee Food Store certificates for families dealing with medical hardships where they were traveling to doctors and staying at hospitals." He said that was another $6,300 in help provided. Wardlow said the reason that the group is open about sharing these numbers is not about recognition, but transparency. "This community supports our golf tournaments, raffles, and fundraising events all year long, so we want everyone to know where the money goes and how it is spent. After 20 years, our little charity has grown to into a huge success that we really didn’t expect. The best part is 100% of all money raised is spent for those in Edmonson County, only. No other surrounding county has anything close to what we have or the support we have. Santa’s Helping Hands would like to send out a huge 'thank you' to every volunteer and everyone who continues supporting our cause. We're looking forward to even more in 2025 and the years to come."
