Edmonson Voice Report: Today at the VFW Department of Kentucky Convention at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, Brownsville VFW Post 6937 received multiple awards. Outgoing Department of Kentucky Commander, John Wingfield, conducted the ceremonies, and the Guest of Honor and presenter of awards was Past National VFW Commander-In-Chief, John E. Hamilton. Hamilton served in the Marine Corps from 1968-1970, where he was awarded three Purple Heart Medals for wounds, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Following his combat service in Vietnam, Commander Hamilton was a professional wrestler for fifteen years known as “Johnny Montana” and “Dr. Death.” He has been honored by Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush for his outstanding community service and leadership. The morning began with VFW Post 6937 Commander Edwin Vincent, and Post Quartermaster Gerald Carroll being awarded the coveted All State white covers in honor of the Brownsville post being among the top ten Posts in the State (Vincent was similarly awarded All State for his service as the VFW District 5, composed of all Posts in the counties adjacent to Edmonson. The judging for All State includes community service, recruiting, patriotic activities, which ensures that the Post fulfills its Congressional Charter to honor the fallen soldiers, take care of widows and orphans, and to do good works in the community. Next, longtime Post member Morris Blanton was honored as “State Comrade of the Year” for Kentucky. Morris is always a good friend and comrade and he has participated at every Post activity. Brownsville Patrol Officer Austin Meredith was honored as the state Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Officer Meredith was unable to attend, but his award will be presented at the Brownsville Town Hall soon. Derek Esters of the Edmonson County EMS was awarded the Kentucky State VFW Paramedic Award. The Brownsville VFW Post wants to congratulate award recipients from today's ceremony.
