Edmonson Voice Report:
Over the last week, fifth graders at the Edmonson County 5/6 Center competed against each other in a spooky story writing contest. Each student in Mrs. Madison Jones's Language Arts classes worked hard by writing a rough draft, editing the final copy of their story with Mrs. Madison, and even designing a cover for their story.

The stories were anonymously read out loud to each class. The students then got to vote on which stories they felt were the most creative, detailed, and of course, the scariest.

The winners were Wyatt Coy, Alexis Antle, Leroy Miller, Amelia Howell, and Madison Tarter. Take a look at these spooky stories below. Beware!

THE ABANDONED CAR SHOP

Picture
The Abandoned Car Shop
By: Wyatt Coy

One cold winter night, a group of six teenagers were driving down the road for a late night drive. Wyatt, Connor, Bryan, Jake, Paxton, and Luke were having a good time. They drove up on a trail, and were curious where it went. Wyatt suggested that they go check it out, so the group decides to drive off-road, down the trail.

They kept driving down the trail and they saw a NO TRESPASSING sign. The boys didn’t think anything of it, and they decided to keep going. They drove up to a huge garage, and decided to check it out. The boys hop out of the truck and tried to go in, but the door was locked. Wyatt walked back to the truck and he opened the tailgate. He grabbed a crowbar and went to the main door and pried it open, and then the boys went inside.

The garage turned out to be an old, abandoned car shop. There was all kinds of old cars, maybe even 200. The boys kept walking around the garage looking at the cars, amazed. But they noticed that none of the cars had even a speck of dust on them. Was it really abandoned or had someone else been there? They decided to leave.

They walked out of the garage, looked into the woods, when they saw headlights headed in their direction. Who in the world could this be? An old man gets out of a side by side. “GET OFF THIS PROPERTY!” the old man yells. The boys see he has a gun. Before the boys could even try to escape, the crazy old man just starts firing his gun. Bryan gets shot in the leg. The boys couldn't leave their buddy behind, so they picked up Bryan and they all hurried to the truck.

They drove out of the trail as fast as they could. They went down the trail, and turned back on the main road. They were trying to rush Bryan to the hospital. But out of the corner of Wyatt’s eye, he saw the old man had followed the boys. He drove up through the woods and pulled out in front of the boys, right in the middle of the road. The boys swerved out of the way, but Wyatt lost control and crashed. Then another truck came by and smashed into their truck again. The wheels caught the ground and started flipping. Everyone was injured, but were able to get out, barely making it. The boys grabbed Bryan, and started trying to run down the road. The old man was still chasing the boys on the side by side. Finally, a cop came by with his sirens and lights on. He rammed the back of the old man’s side by side, and got the old man out. Another cop car came by and rescued the boys, and the old man was arrested and taken to jail.

The boys got the help they needed, and finally got to go back home to their families. Wyatt got all tucked in bed, and turned on the news as he tried to fall asleep. He saw something he wished he didn’t see. The news reporter said two cops had been killed, and the old man had escaped. Suddenly there was a knock on Wyatt’s door. Who could that be? Wyatt looked out the window, and the old man was standing on Wyatt’s porch, covered in blood.
THE END.

THE HAUNTED CAMPSITE

The Haunted Campsite
By: Amelia Howell
In the middle of the woods, some friends were on a camping trip. Mrs. Madison, Charlotte, Addie, and Jaylee, and I were having so much fun, but things quickly changed. They were sitting by the fire roasting hot dogs and stuff, when they heard a rattle. They kept talking and laughing, but then they heard the rattle again from about 10 feet away. “It’s probably a snake or a lizard, it’s fine,” said Mrs. Madison. Then Mrs. Madison told us she was going to bed and told us goodnight. The rest of the girls decided to stay up and talk.

After the girls stayed up a little while longer, they became tired and they also decided to go to bed. They started setting their own tents up and getting ready for bed, when all of a sudden they heard another noise. It was a soft, creepy laugh. Charlotte asked me if she could stay in my tent, because she was scared. Of course I said yes.

We were talking and getting the tent ready. Charlotte stopped and looked scared. “Did you hear that?” she said. “No? What was it?” I said back. “It sounded like a weird laugh, but I’m probably just hearing stuff,” Charlotte said. I agreed with her, and we decided to keep talking and try not to get freaked out. It was probably nothing, right?

All of sudden we heard an evil laugh, and it sounded like it was right beside the tent. We ran to Mrs. Madison’s to wake her up. We told her what happened, and she thought we were joking around. “I can just take you back to your tent  so you won’t be scared,” Mrs. Madison offered. Charlotte and I decided to stick together, and Mrs. Madison went back to her tent and went back to sleep.

Then, Mrs. Madison woke up to a strange laugh. “HAHAHAHHA!” She thought it was a bad dream, until she saw a shadowy figure outside of the tent, creeping over her. She didn’t want to believe it, even though she knew Charlotte and I were probably right.

She decided she was just seeing stuff, and tried to go back to sleep, but she was too scared. Mrs. Madison couldn’t sleep, so she decided to come to our tent and see if we were awake. We all went outside, and that’s when we saw it. The noises we had been hearing, the shadowy figure we saw, it was a witch. “What are we going to do?” I said. We peaked out and the witch was still outside our tent. The witch was solid green, and really tall. She was dressed in all black, except her socks were green and black stripes. She was wearing pointy, black boots. She looked truly evil, and we knew the only way to stop her was to kill her before she killed us.

I came up with a plan. “Okay guys here’s the plan. We’re going to try to sneak to the car and get some weapons. Then, we’re just going to have to find her lair and sneak up on her.”

At this point the witch had disappeared again, and we knew now was our chance to proceed with our plan. We begin walking through the woods to the car and looking for her secret lair as we go. We stop when we see a green glow coming from the woods. Charlotte suddenly falls into a hole, and then she gets back up and she is now covered in mud. “Sorry guys, I’m okay,” she said.

We keep following the light, and Addie decides to walk right into the green, foggy, glow. Suddenly, Addie falls and she gets thrown down a green slide. Terrified, we all holler for her as loud as we can. When she doesn’t answer, we realize we have to go in after her. We all go down the slide and we get taken to an underground cave. We all start looking around the cave, desperately trying to find a way out. We come up on two dead bodies, and scream for our lives, but we had no choice but to keep going so we don’t end up like them.

“HAHAHHAHHAH!” We all hear that evil, hideous, laugh. The witch was here and she was ready to kill us. We ran and tried to hide under the table, but the witch spotted Mrs. Madison. She snatches Mrs. Madison up on her broom and takes her away. Mrs. Madison is screaming and crying for help, but it’s too late. The witch takes off and disappears.

Now it’s sunrise, and Mrs. Madison is still missing. We walked around all night trying to find her. We finally found a grey slide. “I bet this is her other lair, Mrs. Madison is probably in here!” I say. Scared, we all go down the grey slide. I go in, and I see Mrs. Madison chained to a chair with duct tape over her mouth. She was barely alive, hanging on by a thread. We looked around and didn’t see the witch, so we unchained her and began to escape. Suddenly we hear an evil, graving voice. “Well who do we have here?” Crap. The witch had found us. There was no escape. We knew there was nothing we could do. The witch kept us and starved us all to death, and we withered away into nothing, right next to the dead bodies we found earlier.

The legend of the girls and their teacher lived on through Edmonson County for decades to come. Legend has it the witch is still hunting 5th graders to this day. Watch your back, 5th grade.
THE END.

THE HAUNTED WOODS

The Haunted Woods
By: Alexis Antle
Once upon a time, in the early 1900s, there were two girls, Kelly and Elizabeth. One night, when the clock struck midnight, they decided to sneak out of their house during their sleepover and wander into the woods.

As they’re walking through the woods, they spot an old man they had never seen before. The old man was wearing all black clothing. His face had wrinkles all over it and he was bald. He hopped off his horse and grabbed a gun from his carriage. He gave Kelly and Elizabeth the heebie jeebies!

“What are y’all doing out here alone?” hollered the old man. Kelly and Elizabeth began backing away, but the old man pointed his gun at them and instructed them to get closer. He put the gun down, and he grabbed a bat out of his carriage. Kelly and Elizabeth tried to run, but the old man hopped on his horse and began chasing them through the woods.

The old man caught up to the girls, knocked them out with the bat, and slung them into the horse carriage. Kelly and Elizabeth later woke up in an old, unfamiliar house. “This place smells TERRIBLE!” Kelly said to Elizabeth. It smelled like an old dirty bathroom. Kelly and Elizabeth heard a noise from outside. They looked out and saw the old man looking through the woods, and it looked like he was hunting for more kids to kidnap. The clock struck 2:00 am. The girls had been missing for 2 hours. What were they gonna do? At this point, the girls had no idea where they were, and had no idea how far away from home they were.

Back at Kelly’s house, Kelly’s mom woke up with a funny feeling. She went to check on the girls, but to her surprise, they were gone. Kelly’s mom ran and woke her husband. “The girls are not in Kelly’s room, I bet they’re pulling a prank on us. Let’s look around the house and see where they’re hiding,” said Kelly’s mom.

After searching for the girls for an hour, Kelly’s mom decided to go to the neighbors and call for help. She realized the girls were missing.

Back in the haunted forest, in the abandoned house, Kelly and Elizabeth were on the floor crying. The clock struck 3 am. Kelly and Elizabeth were scared to death. They began hearing noises all around the house. Wolves howling, witch’s cackling, giant, heavy footsteps. Suddenly the doors burst open, and every monster you could think of entered the house. Mummies, witches, werewolves, vampires, everything.

The next morning, Kelly’s parents and Elizabeth’s parents decided to hop in their carriage and go full speed through the woods, knowing that’s the only place the girls could have disappeared to. They spotted a house that looked destroyed. They got out of the carriage and ran in the house, thinking the girls had to be in there. They see Kelly and Elizabeth, laying in their own blood. Their blood was splattered all over the floor. The parents all began crying. Suddenly, the door opens. The old man came back to the house. “Why are you at my house?” said the old man. The parents accused the old man of killing their daughters, devastated. The old man got out a rifle, and shot them all.

The thing was, the old man was a cannibal. He drank the blood, and ate all the bodies for lunch, dinner, and a late night snack.
THE END.

THE HAUNTED MANSION

The Haunted Mansion

My name is Tom. My friends and I live in the forest of Glenmore. We like to go on adventures. One day, while at the creek, we found a very large house. It was very old and creepy. We went to check it out. We went inside, and the floors creaked and moaned beneath our feet. It was very dark inside. Upstairs, we could see five pumpkins and six candles. It looks like someone had done a summoning spell. All of the sudden, we heard a loud moaning and the sound of horse hooves. We were scared and we all ran out of the house.

When we got outside we saw a man on a horse, with a pumpkin on his head. He came after us. He drew a pumpkin sword out of a sheath. My friend, Miller, dodged the sword but hit his head on a tree branch. The pumpkin man got off his horse, and ran at us.

He charged at my friend Macy and stabbed her through the chest. We grabbed anything we could to shield ourselves and ran through the forest. We hid behind the trees, and thought we were finally safe.

All of the sudden, the pumpkin man appeared and attacked me. I tried to fight him off as best as I could, but he stabbed me. I lay on the ground and as my eyes closed, I thought I was dead.

“Tom!” I hear my mom yell. My eyes peel open. I realized it was all a dream. I really should not have eaten all that Halloween candy before bed.
THE END.

The Haunted Graveyard
By: Madison Tarter
Late on one spooky Friday night, I was at my friend Mia’s house playing games and having a fun time. All of a sudden, we heard a scream. We were both so scared, but we had to look outside to see what it was. I creeped up to my window, and I was shocked. I saw a graveyard. “You have a graveyard behind your house?” I asked Mia. “Yeah, I do,” Mia replied. We decided to sneak outside.

As we were walking through the graveyard, a ghost rose from the ground, right out of a grave! We screamed as the ghost started circling around us. Were we going to die? Was this it?

The ghost picked me up, and drug me through the air. As I went flying through the air, I was terrified, and my heart was racing out of my chest. I feared my life was over. Suddenly, Mia’s dog, Lady, jumped up, grabbed my shoe, and pulled me down. Mia and I ran back into the house as fast as we could, running for our lives.

We ran inside the house, and slammed the door. We were safe at last. Lady was a hero, she saved us from the spooky ghost! We never walked back into the haunted graveyard ever again.
THE END.
