Edmonson Voice Staff Report: The ECMS academic team completed a highly successful week to begin its 2018-2019 academic season. The team opened its season on October 9th with a pair of quick recall victories over Moss Middle School. The junior varsity team won by a score of 10 to 3. In the varsity match, ECMS outscored Moss 33 to 5. On October 13, ECMS competed in the second annual Robert Goddard Academic Memorial Tournament at Rockcastle County, Kentucky. ECMS fielded two teams in the tournament with players competing in quick recall, testing, and lightning rounds. The varsity team consisting of Evy Bolton, Brody Johnson, Jonas Miller, and Emma Sackett placed first in the quick recall competition. The ECMS varsity quick recall team scored victories over middle school teams from Johnson County B, Pikeville, Danville B, Rockcastle A, Johnson County A, South Laurel, and Danville A. The ECMS junior varsity team consisting of Lola Bolton, Brycen Daniels, Ian Dooley, Brayden Johnson, Avary Vertrees, and Lyla Wood posted a record of three wins and three losses. ECMS had the following testing placements: Jonas Miller social studies 1st place Brody Johnson arts & humanities 3rd place Emma Sackett arts & humanities 4th plac Avary Vertrees language arts 10th place Lyla Wood science 10th place A new feature added to the Goddard Tournament was the lightning round competition. Students competed in quick recall in a single subject, rather than a variety of subjects. Jonas Miller of ECMS won the social studies lightning round competition. Evy Bolton competed as a finalist in the language arts competition.
Coach Greg Grey stated, “We had a great opening week for our season. Everyone on our team gained some playing time and valuable experience in our opening games. We have a long way to go to achieve our goals for this year, but the coaches and players are looking forward to a great season.”
