J.C. Higgs, 65, of Chalybeate passed away at 10:43 PM Wednesday Jan. 29, 2020 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.
The Edmonson County native was a 1972 graduate of ECHS, a retired P. Lorillard employee and a member of New Home General Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Pink Higgs and Mary Poteet Higgs. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Denham and a nephew, Wes Denham. J.C. requested private services for family and the family is honoring that request. The Jefferson County native was an auto mechanic and a member of Mt. Zion United Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Elmer G. Hogan and Erma Dean Johnson Hogan of Brownsville, who survives. The Edmonson County native was a plumber, a member of the National Rifle Association and a member of Union Light Missionary Baptist Church. He was a son of James Floyd Childress and Christine Priddy Childress of Mammoth Cave, who survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Childress. Dorothy Hogan Vincent, age 90 of Louisville, departed this life on Monday, January 20, 2020 at her residence. The Barren County native was born on August 7, 1929 to the late Allen L. Hogan and Mary Elizabeth Martin Hogan. She was married to the late Wavey F. Vincent.
Dorothy was a retired nursing aide for Mt. Holly and Brownsboro Hills Nursing Homes, and was a member of Clifton Baptist Church. He was predceded in death by a son, Roger Miller; two brothers, Roger Miller and David Miller; and three sisters, Pat Bentley, Lola Mae Kitchens and Ethel Faye England. Dick was born in Park City, Kentucky on December 13, 1940, the son of Irvin and Mary Edith (Philpott) Thompson. Dick was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Rita E. Thompson, on March 25, 1967 in Grosse Pointe Presbyterian Church. The couple made their home in St. Claire Shores before moving to Fraser. He loved the games of golf, tennis, and all sports that had anything to do with a ball. He held a Master’s Degree in Physical Education and was a Phys. Ed. teacher and coach at South Lake High School, retiring in 2000 after 38 years. He was also very active with the Boy Scouts of America. He loved woodworking and making things around the house and for his family. A very caring man, he would bring a smile to everyone's face and never met a stranger. Dick will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The Jefferson County native was a self-employed drywaller. He was a son of the late Oren Kessinger and Flossie Burns Kessinger of Bowling Green, who survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Owen Kessinger and a step son, Brian Williams. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 PM Saturday at Iva Baptist Church, 124 William Simmons Rd. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday at the church. Also surviving are his former wife, Darlene Kessinger of Bowling Green; a son, Warren Craig Kessinger of Bowling Green; three sisters, Shirley Deweese (Joseph) of Jetson and Barbara Dennison and Frances Embry (Lloyd) both of Bowling Green; two grandchildren, Ryan Williams and Aaron Williams; and three great grandchildren. Jonell Renfro Martin, age 74 of Chalybeate, departed this life on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born on April 22, 1945 to the late Claude and Margie Ray Renfro. She was married to her devoted husband and help mate, Leon Martin, who survives.
Jonell retired as a hairdresser, and was a faithful member of Beaver Dam Chapel United Baptist Church. Besides her husband, she leaves to honor her memory-- two sisters, Lois Hogan of Bowling Green and Anna Stewart of Brownsville; one brother, Billie Renfro (Donna) of Bowling Green and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses, Roy and Sarah Renfro, Joyce and Billy Sullivan and Wanda and Howard Haynes and two brothers-in-law, Victor Hogan and Gerald Stewart.
