Shannon Johnson, age 73, of Bee Spring peacefully departed this life with her family by her side on Thursday, January 27th, 2022 at the Hospice House in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born on May 7, 1948 to Frances and the late Cleo Lashley. She was married to Bro. Larry E. Johnson, until he preceded her in death on February 1, 2011.
Shannon recently retired as a teacher’s aide from Kyrock Elementary School. She truly loved those kids, and her Blackhawk family. She was a member of Pleasant Union United Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star and a former member of the Brownsville Homemakers. She leaves to honor her memory-- a son, Jason Tyree (Shayna) of Brownsville; two grandchildren, Lauren Tyree of Smiths Grove and Kash Tyree of Brownsville; her mother, Frances Lashley of Brownsville; a stepson, Steve Johnson (Barbara) of Roundhill; a step-granddaughter, Samantha Johnson of Bowling Green; a step-great-grandson, Oliver Orion, along with a host of friends, cousins and extended family members. The Edmonson County native was born on June 5, 1948 to the late Elbert Lancaster and Sopha Madison Cook. Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Don Lancaster, beloved stepfather, Martin Lloyd Cook, and father-in-law Charles Cummings. He was married to his devoted wife and best friend, Diana Cummings Lancaster, who survives.
Larry was a retired business manager and accountant for Corns Truck and Trailer and Bowling Green Truck and Trailer. He was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church. Besides his wife, he leaves to honor his memory: two children, Charles Lancaster and Amy Lancaster Carter (Matthew) of Bowling Green; four grandchildren, Lindsay Lancaster of Bowling Green, Steven Lancaster (Elizabeth) of Clarksville, TN, Andrew Carter (Megan), and Emily Carter of Bowling Green; three great-grandchildren, Giana and Larry Lancaster and Benjamin Carter of Bowling Green; mother-in-law Gwen Cummings of Bowling Green; and three sister’s-in-law Debbie Pike of Louisville, Jeannie Marshall of Bowling Green, and Charlene Cummings of Rising Star, Texas. Butch Carroll, age 74, of Brownsville, departed this life Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Hospice House of Southern Kentucky in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born on October 31, 1947 to the late Layman and Maxine Prunty Carroll. Some may not know Larry, but most knew Butch and his contagious personality. He was full of life, laughter, and was loyal to his family, friends, and the place he cherished and called home, Edmonson County. Butch was saved as a young boy in 1957 during a revival at Kyrock United Baptist Church, and remained a member until his passing. He was a 1965 graduate of Edmonson County High School and later obtained an Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Kentucky University. He was drafted into the United States Army shortly after his high school graduation. Butch was stationed at Quarry Heights in the Panama Canal Zone, and served during the Vietnam War. After two years of service, he earned the rank of SPC 5, which was rare for a young soldier. Butch retired from Holley Carburetor in 1993, after working there for over thirty years. He started on the assembly lines and with a lot of grit, hard work and determination, he progressed to the manager of the Quality Department. Since he wasn’t one to sit idle, Butch ran and was elected for the office of Edmonson County Clerk, and fervently served his county for over sixteen years. He leaves to honor his memory-- his children, Amy Thornhill and her husband Bobby, and Nathan Carroll; his grandchildren, Michelle Merritt (Patrick) and Mason Thornhill all of Brownsville; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Stella Merritt, along with two nieces and a nephew. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Danny and Ricky Carroll. Kevin was saved as a little boy at Pleasant Union United Baptist Church, and remained a member until his passing. He was a 1998 graduate of Edmonson County High School. Kevin worked as a construction worker, was a former employee of Sun Valley Feed Mill and at Mammoth Cave, until his health declined and left him unable to work. He was an avid outdoorsman, and thoroughly enjoyed bow hunting. He spent endless hours at Sanders’ Archery tuning his bow, and even taught some archery classes to the youth in the community. Besides his mother, Lona, he leaves to honor his memory-- his sister, Regina Webb and her husband George; his niece, Autumn Dennison and her husband Derrick all of Sweeden, along with a host of friends and extended family members. Danny worked as a farmer and cattleman throughout his life, and was a 1968 graduate of Edmonson County High School. In his younger years, he worked construction, was later employed by Irving Materials, Inc. and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 89. During his father’s term as Edmonson County Sheriff, he also served as a deputy. In his spare time, he loved to hunt and be with his beloved grandchildren. Danny left his testimony of finding the Lord through salvation in the little barn on his family’s home place. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Union United Baptist Church, where he remained a member until his passing. She had an incredible sense of humor, and truly enjoyed sporadic adventures with a full-tank of gas, music and packed lunch with her companion, Jeff. Her greatest title and blessing was being “GiGi” to her grandson, whom she adored. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Ray and Lois Wells Ray and the wife of the late Grover Pierce. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Poteet; a half brother, Clifford Ray; and a half sister, Mary Denham. The Delafield native was born June 5, 1940, to the late Opal and Carl Harral . Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael Harral and David Harral and his sisters, Linda Anderson, Jo Ann Gilbert, Doris Peach and Sandra Harper. He served his community as a skilled laborer and trade worker for many years. He loved his family and was an avid lover of bluegrass music. He was a longtime emcee of the Auburn Bluegrass Jam. Garnett is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Pennington Harral; their daughters: Teresa Lindsey (Scott) of Chalybeate, Edith Adamson (Joe) of Woodburn and Rhonda Dillard of Plum Springs. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and special friends. The Amsterdam, NY native was a retired foreman for Henry Vogt Machine Co., and a US Army and US Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a son of the late Phillip Barone and Antronett Polifrone Barone and the husband of the late Gracie Estel Smith Barone. James Daniel “Danny” McGrew, 68, of Brownsville passed away at 6:13 PM Tuesday Jan. 11, 2022 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.
The Edmonson County native was a mechanic for various Gary Force dealerships. He was a son of the late James Murrell McGrew and Reva Brooks McGrew. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Timothy, Michael, Johnny and David McGrew. No public services are scheduled. Gravil Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Catherine Louise Kenney, 94, of McLeansville, NC passed away Jan. 8, 2022 at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro, NC.
The Edmonson county native was a retired cook at Brownsville and South Edmonson Elementary Schools, a member of #279 Rocky Hill Order of Eastern Star and a member of Cedar Springs United Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late James Louis Sanders and Lavada Ritter Sanders and the wife of the late Robert “Bob” Kenney. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Cathy Johnson and Judy Johnson; a sister, Rheada Venners; and two brothers, Deward Sanders and Buel Sanders. Danny Allen Vincent, age 47, of Benson NC, passed away on January 7, 2022.
Danny was born on August 18th, 1974 in Jefferson County, KY to Gary Sr. and Dorothy Vincent. He attended Eastern Randolph High in Ramsur, NC and thrived with his business remodeling homes, painting, and floor work. Reva Nell Brown, age 83, of Glasgow, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022 in Glasgow. The Mud Lick, KY native was born on March 30, 1938 to the late Tommy Winfield Brown and Lee Edna Miller Brown.
Reva was born with shortened arms which, with effort, can grip no more than a piece of paper. She learned to complete day-to-day functions with her feet. Reva began to draw cartoons, then progressing into landscape, animals and religious works. One of the highlights of Reva’s life was being a member of the Mouth and Foot Paint Association since 1982. She also attended Glenview Drive First Church of God. Reva is survived by her nephew, Rondal Rex Brown; niece, Cornetta Hurt; great-nephew, Ken McKenney (Leslie) and great-niece, Lisa Ann Houchens (Paul). Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by companions, James Dugard and Charles Kinslow; brothers, Ivan Morris Brown and Rex Brown and niece, Laneda Brown McKenney. He was born September 26, 1938 in New Hope. He was a former machinist with Brown and Williamson Tobacco with 22 years of service and later worked at Cooper Industries in Elizabethtown. He was an avid lifelong Farmer and loved raising cattle and tobacco. He was a member of Saint James Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis William and Mary Ellen Masterson Devers; seven sisters, Lois Jean Richardson, Dorothy Howell, Elizabeth Jane Harris, Eugenia Anderson, Shirley Ann Devers, Martha Kimberlin and infant Maria Goretti Devers; five brothers, William Paul, Joseph Newman, Donnie, Dennis Jr. and infant Douglas McArthur Devers. Graham, age 92 of Pine Grove, departed this life on Sunday, January 2, 2022 in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born on October 21, 1929 to the late Hughie and Grace Kinser Graham. He was married to the late June Virginia Graham.
Bennie was a farmer and a retired bus driver for the Edmonson County School System for over 40 years. He was member of Pine Grove United Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee. He leaves to honor his memory-- his daughter, Phyllis Richmond (Ernest) of Portland, TN; grandchildren, Loren Richmond (Tina), Bryan Richmond, Jay Norris, and Jason Richmond; great-grandchildren, Nathan Hayes, Ashely Lynn Norris, Tommy Norris, Tyler Richmond, Benjamin Richmond, Alli Richmond, Seth Richmond, and Katie Richmond and a brother, Harvey Graham. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Faye Graham, granddaughter, Sandy Richmond, four brothers, and three sisters. Interment will be in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
