Johnny L. Russell, age 74, a lifelong resident of the Salem community in Edmonson County, departed this life on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. Johnny was born on October 1, 1949 to the late Arlie Virgil and Mona Saltsman Russell. He was married to his devoted, loving wife of fifty-one years, Judy Childress Russell, who survives.
Johnny proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He worked for many years at Davis H. Elliott, and retired as a foreman. He joined New Salem United Baptist Church on October 27, 1963, and remained a member until his passing. In recent years, he attended Bee Spring Missionary Baptist Church, and was also a member of the Edmonson County DAV Chapter 32. Johnny never met a stranger, and was a friend to all who knew him. He loved being outdoors, either behind the sights of a rifle deer hunting, casting a line from his bass boat or just sitting on the front porch waving to his neighbors as they passed by. Besides his wife, Judy, he leaves to honor his memory— his children, Chad Russell (Beth) of Glasgow and Megan Saling (Chris) of Wingfield; grandchildren, Kaylee Russell, Will and Wade Saling, along with several other extended family members and friends. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Vannie Duvall, Betty Carroll, Terry and James Russell. Interment will be in Salem Church Cemetery. Ruby was a member of Chalybeate United Baptist Church and a founding member of Smiths Grove Fire Department Sparkettes, She was a retired from Holley Automotive. The Edmonson County native was a retired seamstress and a member of Poplar Springs United Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late George Hillard Hogan and Effie Browning Hogan and the wife of the late Herman Mills. She was preceded in death by 13 siblings. The Lynwood, CA native was a homemaker. She was a daughter of the late Bob White and Katherine A. Clark White and the wife of the late Billy Potter. Lawrence Bratcher, age 85 of Mammoth Cave, departed this life on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. The Hart County native was born on June 15, 1938 to the late Chasteen and Dorothy Wood Bratcher. He was married to his devoted, loving wife of sixty-one years, Madge Newton Bratcher, who survives.
Rev. Lawrence worked for many years at Brownsville Manufacturing, and later at Campbell Hausfeld in Leitchfield. He was saved as a twenty-seven year old man, and later called to the Lord’s ministry. He was a faithful member of Otter Gap Missionary Baptist Church, and was ordained to preach on October 20, 1971. During that time, he helped many lost souls, and pastored three churches, Pine Grove United Baptist Church of Hart County, Sulphur Wells Missionary Baptist Church and Broadford United Baptist Church. In his later years, even though his health was failing, he continued to go to church and work for the Lord. Rev. Lawrence was a wonderful Christian example for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and brothers and sisters in Christ. Karen was an endless optimist; showed grace to everyone she met, and will be remembered for the joy she spread to others throughout her journey here with us. Grady served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for many years as a dairy farmer. More importantly, he lived a Christian life and was a servant for the Lord. Grady was a faithful member, deacon and former song leader at Mt. Zion United Baptist Church. The Warren County native was a disabled US Navy veteran and attended Warren Central High School. She was the daughter of the late Darrell Wyne Austin and Betty Carr Austin. Gerald Jerry Offutt, a son of the late Nathaniel Offutt and Catherine Davidson Offutt, was born, February 11, 1940, in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Gerald was a 1958, graduate of High Street High School and was awarded a college basketball scholarship. He served in the United States Army and received the Sharpshooter Badge. Rev. Offutt was formerly employed by Holley, First Baptist Church, First Christian Church and Pittsburg Paint Store. Rev. Offutt was honored for serving as Pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist Church for over 25 years by the Union District Association, but his dedication and commitment allowed him to serve as their shepherd for 44 years. Rev. Offutt loved to read his bible, he was a handyman and painter, an avid sports fan, especially Louisville Cardinals and Tennessee Titans and he was an awesome chef. Rev. Offutt was truly a man of God, doing a work for the Lord by preaching, teaching, and singing praises to his heavenly Father. Some of his favorite songs were I Am Redeemed, Use Me Lord, Because He Lives, and I Can Only Imagine. A true testament of who he was as he joined his Father on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 27 days. The memories of Rev. Nan was a member of Basil Chapel United Baptist Church. She was a 1991 graduate of Caverna High School, and went on to receive her masters degree from Western Kentucky University. She was a member of the Kentucky Education Association, as well as the Kentucky Music Educators Association. The Lord graciously blessed her with musical gifts, and she shared her talents with the children of Edmonson and Barren Counties. In recent years, she taught art and music at Kyrock Elementary. Besides her mother, Shirley, she leaves to honor her memory-- her beloved sons, Ben, Blake and Bryce Raymer all of Sweeden; her sisters, Theresa Jones (David) of Horse Cave and Marcia Payne (Tommy) of Bon Ayr; an aunt, Doris Ward, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members whom she adored. The Chicago native was a factory worker, a CAN, a janitor and a member of Combs Lane Baptist Church in Scottsville. She was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Williamson and Jo Ann Cliff Williamson. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday at Gravil Funeral Home with burial to follow in Hawks Cemetery. Visitation will take place after 10:00 AM Saturday. Born on May 5th, 1959, Lesia brought boundless love, warmth, and wisdom into the lives of those fortunate enough to know her. She never met a stranger and welcomed everyone with open arms and a hug. She leaves a legacy of compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. A native of Brownsville, KY, Lisa was a beacon of kindness and generosity. Her nurturing spirit and selfless love knew no bounds, and she touched the lives of countless individuals with her grace and compassion. She created a home filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories for all who entered. An avid advocate for family and close friendships, Lesia, was always seeking ways to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Her tireless dedication to uplifting those in need served as an inspiration to many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Malesia Ann Simpkins is survived by her loving family, her partner Jim Fuller, her children, Christopher D. Poteet and Joshua K. Simpkins, and her brother William (Bill) Poteet. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Reva Poteet. Anyone who knew Lesia is aware that she would not want anyone to mourn her and that this is just a shell covering her true self. Bill Holsinger, age 86 of Cave City, departed this life on January 1, 2024 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. The Pike County native was born on September 23, 1937 to the late Garland and Mary Ridenour Holsinger. He was married for sixty-one years to the love of his life, Daisy Smith Holsinger, who survives.
Bill served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and was of the Baptist faith. He worked at Mammoth Cave National Park as a supervisor, owner of Save-A-Lot and owner of Holsinger Reality and Construction. Besides his wife, Daisy, he leaves to honor his memory-- his son, David Holsinger (Dennise) of Cave City; grandchildren Charlie Holsinger, Dusty Hood, Tyler Lambirth and Whitney Furlong (Chris); great-grandson, Eli Walden; sister, Areta Hatfield and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Cheri Boston; siblings, Charles Holsinger (Gerri) and Jewell Stull. Interment will be in Cave City Cemetery. The Edmonson County native was born on June 23, 1929 to the late Herbert P. and Delphia L. Wolfe Slaughter. She was married for seventy-years to her devoted husband and help mate, Junior Parsley, until they were parted by his death on January 27, 2019.
Vernetia retired after working many years at Eaton Corporation. She was a member of Beaver Dam United Baptist Church, and when her health permitted, she loved preparing Sunday meals for the men of God and her family. She also loved traveling across the United States, and had visited the forty-eight contiguous states. She leaves to honor her memory— her children, Roger Parsley (Jeannie) of Brownsville, Randy Parsley (Sherian) of Brownsville and Deanna Vincent (Billy Ray) of Rhoda; grandchildren, Brian Parsley (Heather), Michael Parsley (Kimberly), Tyra Ballance (Bill), Travis Parsley (Jessica), Lana Parsley, Bo Vincent (Ashley) and Emily Bullock (Daniel), along with fifteen great-grandchildren. To honor her memory she leaves her children, Brent Decker, Nancy Kerr (Terry) of Leitchfield, Tammy Carrillo (P.J.) of Millwood, and Lacey Hartman (Brian) of Clarksville, TN. Marie had 17 grandchildren. Besides her children and grandchildren she leaves behind her siblings, Jerry Decker (Judy) of Leitchfield, Laveana Lindsey of Shepherdsville, Anna Hasson (Mike) of TN, Shelia Shultz (Kevin) of AL. Several nieces and nephews. Other than her parents she is preceded in death by a brother, Terry Decker and a nephew, Christopher Decker. No public services will be held at this time. |
