Mrs. Marilyn Loraine Carrier, age 86, formerly of Webster and Bee Springs, KY passed away Monday, March 22, 2021 in Madisonville, KY. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mitch and Lena Hayes Meredith; and two sons, Ricky and Bobby Carrier.
Mrs. Carrier is survived by two sons, Tommy Carrier of Louisville, KY and Danny Carrier of New Albany, IN; six Grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Warren County native was a daughter of the late Franklin and Zelma Cherry Moss. She was the wife of the late Richard “Dick” Bessette and is preceded in death by a son Darrell Richard Bessette and a brother, Joe Harper. She was a Financial Aide Counselor for Western Kentucky University. She was a member of the Smiths Grove Church of Christ and the Reading Divas. Phyllis enjoyed being an election officer for Warren County and getting to visit with the voters as they arrived. The Edmonson County native was a member of the 1980 class of Edmonson County High School, a maintenance worker at Fruit of the Loom, a member of Bee Spring Missionary baptist Church and attended Cassidy Free Methodist Church. He was the son of Gerald Meredith of Brownsville, who survives, and the late Mary Lou Harper and the husband of the late Lisa Faye Bryant Meredith. Raymond was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired as a salesman from Wickes Lumber Company, and previously worked as a security guard for Guards Mark. He was a member and former trustee of Otter Gap Missionary Baptist Church, and a member of Washington Meredith Masonic Lodge #355 F&AM. Betty was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Bakersport to Otho Jackson Buckley and Amy Vera Polk Buckley. After the tragic loss of her mother at age 6, she was raised by her Aunt Ora and Uncle Freddie Slaughter. Betty retired after 33 years with Edmonson County Schools as the Brownville Elementary School secretary. Generations of children and staff all knew her as “Miss Betty.” She bandaged many skinned knees, loaned hundreds of pencils and offered countless kind words of encouragement. She was a member of Chalybeate United Baptist Church. Betty was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and Mamaw to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 38 years, Earl “Hambone” A. Houchins; and a son-in-law, Dr. Frank Buono. Roy graduated from North Warren High School, Smiths Grove and immediately joined the Air Force. He was an MP in the Air Force and on more than one occasion he was “Airman of the Month.” While stationed in Guam, he was chosen as one of the Honorary Guards for Vice President Agnew. Also while in the Air Force, he became a certified lab technician and retired from the Air Force after seven years as a Staff Sergeant. After returning from the Air Force at an early age, he was employed with the State of Kentucky in the Weights and Measurements Division. After a few years in the Weights and Measurements Division, he became Deputy Agriculture Commissioner for eight years. Later he became Chief of Staff for Lt. Governor Henry and later became a member of Governor Paul Patton’s Cabinet as Deputy Commissioner of Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. After returning from State Government, Roy came home to the farm he loved. He drove his Dad’s old truck over the farm many, many times. He cherished the drive and the lay of the land. He called it God’s Country. He felt that he was home where the land the environment with its sounds of nature which made him feel at peace. At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Shadyland Church of Christ. He loved the song Amazing Grace and the history of the son. He thought the song and its history gave people hope as he thought forgiveness was what all people hoped for. Visitation for Roy will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel. She was a daughter of the late Sam Tom Lashley and Geneva Lawrence Lashley of Sunfish, who survives. She was preceded in death by a sister Mitzie Lashley Prewitt. William Leon Lindsey, age 88 of Chalybeate, departed this life on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born on September 8, 1932 to the late Henry and Ollie Blansett Lindsey. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty years, Christine Davis Lindsey.
Leon was a member and deacon of Wingfield United Baptist Church. He was a retired welder from Detrex Corporation. Leon was saved as a young boy at Oak Grove United Baptist Church in an old time revival when the gospel, preached by the late Bro. Gordan Campbell, convicted his heart. He was ordained alongside his late brother, Lonard, as a deacon by Oak Grove on March 23, 1969 and was a faithful member until he felt to join Wingfield Church. He was a strong, faithful Christian, a pillar to the way for many years and a great help to the lost and saved alike. He believed in a begging, knee-route way to salvation and would always stand for the right way. Many times he would stand up from the corner pew and start to testify and the Lord would give him a great blessing. Bro. Leon would always tell his children and the church to live for the Lord, take what you can feel, pray with it and if you can’t feel it, throw it away. Bro. Leon will be greatly missed by his church, family and friends. He leaves to honor his memory-- three sons, Steve Lindsey and his wife Debbi of Horse Cave, Mike Lindsey and his wife Judy of Chalybeate and Keith Lindsey and his wife Chasity of Chalybeate. He most enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren hunting, fishing and shooting guns. He was born on May 13, 1942 in Louisville, KY to the late Clinton Hobart and Elizabeth Barnett Bowman.
Billie Joe was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired as a truck driver from Roadway Trucking. He was a member of the VFW and the Watterson Trail Baptist Church. BJ loved fishing, spending time on the lake, and hosting the Nolin Friday Niter Fishing Tournaments. He leaves to honor his memory- nephew Rob Tellman of Pelham, AL, niece Beth Leftwich (Dan) of Borden, IN, his longtime companion, Rita Walker of Louisville, KY, great nephews Kyle & Ryan, family in the Bardstown area, and many friends who loved him. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Hughes, and nephew, Lee Hughes. Sampson Hospital. The Edmonson County native born on October 24, 1932 to the late Clell and Myrtle Lindsey Childres. She was married to William Porter Jordan, who preceded her in death.
Edna was a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church. She leaves to honor her memory-- one daughter, Sharon Jordan Overfelt of Glasgow; her grandchildren, Ross Overfelt (Dana) of Horse Cave and Amanda Catherine Pugh (Corey) of Glasgow; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alton Childres (Joyce) of Bowling Green and Lannie Childres (Janice) of Rocky Hill and two sisters, Virgie Brown of California and Leoda Childres of Rocky Hill. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Leonard and Jimmy Childres and one sister, Lillie Childres. Interment will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery. The Edmonson County native was a farmer. He served eight years on the Edmonson County School Board including two years as chairman, served 27 years in the Farm Service Agency, served 12 years on the Soil & Water Conservation Board and was an NRCS Master Conservationist. He was a son of the late Raz Alford and Velma Bullock Alford and the husband of the late Wilda Cowles Alford. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Phelps; a sister, Mable Jane Tracey; and a great granddaughter, Maisie Jane Alford. A public walk-through visitation is scheduled for 10 AM-3 PM Saturday at Gravil Funeral Home. Funeral services are private. Burial will take place in Otter Gap Cemetery. Surviving are two daughters, Jackie Alford and Becky Brannon (Todd) both of Bowling Green; two sisters, Carolyn Owens of Las Vegas and Norma Frances Wilson of Louisville; a sister-in-law, Jessie Graham (Ralph) of Louisville; a brother-in-law, William Cowles (Dora) of Oakland; two grandsons, Andy Alford (Jenny) and Brett Brannon; and two great grandsons, Tucker Alford and Lincoln Alford. He was a Brownsville native born to the late James Elic and Helen Lorene Windham Wells and is preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Linville. Bennie was a retired employee of Houchens Industries, a member of Church of Christ and NMCA Hotrod Association. He loved attending the antique car shows with family and friends. Leaving to cherish his memories are is his wife Sheila Minton Wells; two sons, James Nickolas Wells and Ryan Martin Wells (Mallory); his precious grandson, Grayson James Wells and soon to be Benjamin Martin Wells; two sisters, Eva Webb (Billy) and Kitty Williams (James); five brothers, Mark Wells, James Wells (Patty), Robert Wells (Linda), Timmie Wells and Teddy Wells; a beloved niece, Michelle Epley (Stephen); great nieces, Hannah and Sarah Epley; and many many more nieces and nephews; his fur babies, Chloe and Bella; and a host of friends. Funeral service for Bennie will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shadyland Church of Christ with burial in the church cemetery. Buford Edmond Hogan, passed quietly away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at Greenview Regional Hospital. Buford was born in Edmonson County to the proud parents of Lonnie Hogan and Edna Bynum Hogan who preceded him in death.
He was a member and deacon of Otter Gap Baptist Church and a retired teacher from the Edmonson County School System. He spent many years working with special needs students and found his passion when he accepted the position of Homebound Instructor. He was a Navy veteran, enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was younger, and worked crossword puzzles daily. Also preceding him in death were two brothers: Ballard & Elmer Hogan and one sister, Dorothy Conner. Left to cherish the memories shared through the years is his wife, Wanda L. Hogan, one son, Stanley Hogan (Linda) and one daughter, Rhonda Martin (Bob). He was also fortunate to instill many life lessons and love to David Benningfield and Jennifer Benningfield. He has one grandchild, Tricia Wood, a special friend, Tyler Blair, and Tyler’s son, Jase Blair, and one sister, Thelma Blanton. Those that were fortunate to cross his path were blessed by his ability to teach and love. There will be a Celebration of Life planned for a later date. Arrangements for his cremation and other details have been entrusted to Hardy & Son Funeral Home. Tina L. Clemons Hall, age 57 of Brownsville, Ky departed this life on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at her residence. She was born on September 18, 1963 to Richard F. and Margaret A. Clemons.
Ms. Hall is survived by her sons, Christopher Williams and Trenton Williams; her daughter, Jessica R. Merfeld and one brother, Rick Clemons III. A celebration of life in Ms. Hall’s loving memory will be held at Community Church at Cedar Springs in Brownsville beginning at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 20, 2021. The family has entrusted Cone Funeral Home (1510 Campbell Lane) with arrangements. Billy G. Johnson, age 85 of Scottsville, departed this life on Monday, March 8, 2021 in Franklin. The Butler County native was born on January 1, 1936 to the late Audley and Rene Johnson. He was married to Mary Jo Johnson, who preceded him in death.
Billy was of the Christian faith. He leaves to honor his memory— two step-daughters, Mary Jo Walker of Scottsville and Ida Hoskins of Brownsville; three step-sons, Thomas Miller of Brownsville, Charles “Chuckie” Miller of Bowling Green and Mike Miller of Bowling Green; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four siblings, Telma Johnson (Ann), J.M. Johnson, Lucille Johnson and Lloyd Johnson (Cathy). Interment will be in Kinser Cemetery.
