Rebecca Susan (Becky) Higgs York, 73, of Bowling Green passed away April 14, 2025 at Cardinal Landing Memory Care in Bowling Green.
The Edmonson County native was a 1970 graduate of Edmonson County High School, was a secretary for former WKU Sports Information Director Paul Just, a sales associate for Dillards, a homemaker and caregiver, a member of Asphalt Church of Christ and attended Shadyland Church of Christ. She was a daughter of the late Emil York Higgs and Maxine Pile Higgs and the wife of the late William Jackson York. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Alan York Higgs; grandparents, Francis & Lillie Pile and Jesse & Sonora Higgs; an aunt, Wanda Lee Seabolt; and a cousin, Greg Hummel. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday at Gravil Funeral Home with burial to follow in Shadyland Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday. Surviving are two sisters, Amy Farmer and Nancy Higgs both of Brownsville; two nieces, Rachel Wilson (Bill) of Georgetown and Shelly Boyer (Jason) of Virginia Beach, VA; two great nephews, Nicholas Wilson and Michael Wilson; two cousins, Cynthia Smith (Gary) of Pennsylvania and Bill Poteet (Ann) of Merrit Island, FL; and two special little brothers, Keith White of Benton and Kelvin White of Reidland. Mary Lou Cook, age 85, of Louisville, formerly of Park City, KY, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Norton’s Brownsboro hospital after a short illness. Mary Lou was born July 29, 1939, in Pikeville, KY, to Lula Bentley and Chester Hutchinson, both now deceased. She married Martin Cook on May 24, 1958, and they were married for almost 29 years in 1987.
Mary Lou was converted on June 18, 1967, at Hemphill Freewill Baptist Church where she became a faithful member until moving to Park City in 1972 upon Martin’s retirement. There she joined Walnut Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully attended as long as her health allowed. She served as song leader for many years and was a fine example of a Christian woman. She was an outstanding wife, mother, and homemaker, doing everything in her power to make sure all their family were well taken care of. She was an excellent cook, and with Martin’s help, she raised a garden and canned vegetables as long as she was able. Mary Lou worked as a secretary and head start teacher at Hemphill Elementary while her children attended. Later in life, she worked retail at Dress Ups at the Horse Cave Outlet Mall, then managed The Inn, a popular restaurant in Glasgow, putting her cooking and organizational skills to good use. She is survived by her children, Drema Wilson (Rick) and Marty Cook (Elizabeth) both of Louisville; grandsons, Robert Evan Bates and Michael Martin Cook; son-in-law, Robert “Bob” Bates along with numerous precious nieces, nephews, and extended family to mourn her passing. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Melody Cook Bates, and her siblings, June, Lois, Dorothy, Janice, Phyllis, and Dean Bentley. Mary Lou will be laid to rest at Walnut Hill Cemetery next to her beloved husband. A native of Edmonson County, he was born on April 5, 1956, to Shirley Wells Culbreth, who survives, and the late John Thomas Culbreth of Sweeden, KY.
Kerry was saved as a young boy on August 6, 1967, at Bee Springs Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized the same day at Rhoda Creek. He leaves to honor his memory his beloved wife of 35 years, Julia, and his children: Gibson Lee, Haley Collins, and Teresa Kate. A lifelong and accomplished musician, Kerry found his greatest joy in music. He also had a passion for cooking—especially grilling amazing barbecue—and loved dining at good restaurants. Some of his most cherished memories were traveling with his family, fishing in the country, visiting with loved ones, and catching up with friends. He loved his little dogs, Leo and Darla and he spent many happy hours holding them in his favorite recliner. He was the proud owner of Warm Hearth Chimney Sweeps and took great pride in providing excellent service to his customers. In addition to his wife, children, and mother, Kerry is survived by his siblings: Craig Culbreth (Laura), Teresa Houchin, and Melissa Fulkerson (Bobby). He is also lovingly remembered by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his niece, Erin Turner York, and a brother-in-law, Ronnie Houchin. In accordance with his wishes, Kerry was cremated. A celebration of life gathering will be held on June 15, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Culbreth Farm, 422 Kyrock Road, Sweeden, KY 42285. Linda Wilson, age 67 of Bee Spring, departed this life on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at the Edmonson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The Edmonson County native was born on January 18, 1958 to the late William and Mary Goins Wilson.
Linda was a member of Jock United Baptist Church, and the Bee Spring Homemakers. With a free spirit, she embraced the simple joys that surrounded her. Whether she was lost in the enchanting melodies of The Beatles or savoring a Coca-Cola, Linda found happiness in the little things, without any worries or cares. She leaves to honor her memory— her uncle, Joe Goins, and sister-in-law, Venettia Wilson, both of Bee Spring, along with several cousins and extended family members. The Warren County native was born on January 23, 1942 to the late Arthur and Maggie Watt Carrier. He was married to his beloved and devoted wife of sixty-three years, Joyce Simmons Carrier, who survives.
A man of strong faith, Leo found his spiritual home at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, where he was saved. He later joined Pine Grove United Baptist Church, where he became a deacon and devoted member for over 64 years. Leo's faithfulness to his church extended beyond attendance; he served as the church clerk for over 27 years, dedicating countless hours to the well-being of his church. Additionally, Leo dedicated a significant portion of his life to his career. He worked at Dibrell Tobacco Company, until its closure. He then later retired after many years as a maintenance supervisor from Auburn Hosiery Mill. His work ethic and commitment to his roles were commendable, reflecting the values he held so dear. Outside of his professional and spiritual life, Leo had a profound love for spending time on his farm, engaging in the simple pleasures of fishing, and soaking in the beauty of nature. His passion for southern gospel music was evident, as he shared his love for singing with his family in the Carrier Quartet, creating lasting memories through music that brought joy to many. Most importantly, he loved and valued his family above all. Besides his wife, Joyce, he leaves to honor his memory— his son, Marty Carrier of Boiling Springs; a sister, Brenda Sue Richards; sister-in-law, Vontella Carrier, along with several nieces and nephews that he loved as his own. The Edmonson County native was a homemaker, a former employee of Bluegrass Ice Cream Factory, which she also is credited for naming and a member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Dale Raymer and Ida Whobrey Raymer Morton and the wife of the late Wavie M. Roof. She was preceded in death by 12 siblings. Peggy Lou Shive Walden, age 81 of Hiseville, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at NHC HealthCare in Glasgow, KY. The Barren County native was born on February 14, 1944, to the late Otha and Ruby Sparks Shive. She was married to her beloved husband, Larry Glenn Edwards, until they were parted by his passing on September 5, 1973.
Peggy leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, hard work, and a deep commitment to her family, community and church. As a cherished member of Center United Methodist Church, she demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience throughout her life and its challenges, holding steadfast to her faith and always maintaining an unwavering relationship with the Lord. Growing up in a dairy farming family, one of Peggy's greatest joys was witnessing her granddaughter continue this respected tradition within the Hiseville community. With a dedicated career spanning twenty-five years as an assembly line worker, Peggy later spent five years providing compassionate care for the elderly at Home Instead Senior Care, inspiring all who knew her. Additionally, Peggy took great pride in the family home she built alongside her late husband. She found joy in gardening and nurturing her beautiful flowers, and her love for her cats, Butterscotch and Love, brought her comfort and companionship. As a University of Kentucky basketball enthusiast, she delighted in cheering for the Wildcats, and was especially proud when her daughter became an alumna who positively influenced the children in their community as a high school teacher at Barren County High School. She leaves to honor her memory— her daughter, Marilyn L. Wilma, who enjoyed a fulfilling career at Philip Morris Tobacco, embraced retirement with grace and joy. She was a member of New Liberty Methodist Church, where she found a sense of community and purpose. In her free time, she indulged her creative passions, delighting in the intricate art of quilting, the whimsical craft of basket weaving, and the sweet satisfaction of cake decorating. Each activity reflected her warmth and creativity, leaving a lasting impression on those around her. Born November 29, 1942 in Alton, MO, Jim was the epitome of hard work, dedication and love. As a skilled toolmaker, he spent many years building and fabricating tools at the General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green. Prior to his time at the Corvette plant, he also worked in the Illinois cities of Herrin, O’Fallon and Potone, as well as St. Louis, MO and New Mexico. He took immense pride in his craft and has left a lasting impression in his trade. He was a member of UAW Local 2146 and Red Hill General Baptist Church. His dedication and drive was to build and provide a legacy for his family- including his farms. Beyond his work, Jim was a devoted husband to Janet, a loving father to Jimmy and Jay, and a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. An avid outdoorsman, Jim found joy in cattle farming, fishing and hunting. He found a passion for creating hand-made items, like baskets and nets. He was always happiest when visiting with and surrounded by his family. The Edmonson County native was a retired drywaller and a member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Lester Woosley and Gracie Jones Woosley. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Mikey Woosley; four brothers, Lester “Avon” Woosley, Kenneth Woosley, Lewis Woosley and Kermit Woosley; and three sisters, Ethel Woosley, Gracie Leigh Woosley and Carol Woosley. Paul served our country in the U.S. Air Force. He operated as an Amish taxi driver, a role that allowed him to connect with his community and share stories during rides. He had a passion for woodworking, skillfully producing beautiful pieces that reflected his creativity and craftsmanship. Most cherished of all were the moments he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating lasting memories with their Grandad.
