Valerie Ann Browning Pierce, 58, of Big Clifty passed away May 27, 2022 at Helmwood Rehabilitation Center in Elizabethtown.
 
The Edmonson County native was a Raymond driver for Fruit of the Loom and a Baptist. She was a daughter of Tex Browning of Brownsville and Betty Skaggs Hester (Harold) of Bowling Green, all of whom survive. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kelly Browning.
 
No public services are scheduled. Gravil Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
 
Also surviving are her companion, David Gordon of Big Clifty; five children, James Anthony Minton (Cassandra) of Brownsville, Valeria Nicole Davis of Big Clifty, Timothy Lee Davis (Jessica) of Rocky Hill and Bryan Shane Mason and Ryan Shae Mason both of Bowling Green; and 19 grandchildren.

Lancie J. Meredith, 70, of Elizabethtown passed away at 2:35 AM May 27, 2022 at his home.
 
The Edmonson County native was a graduating member of the ECHS Class of 1969, a University of Kentucky graduate, a civil engineer for the KY Transportation Dept. and was a member of the Baptist faith. He was a son of the late Jack A. Meredith and Mildred Poteet Meredith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Nickey Meredith.
 
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday at Gravil Funeral Home with burial to follow in New Home Cemetery. Visitation will take place 3-7 PM Monday and after 10:00 AM Tuesday.
 
Surviving are his wife, Vicki Brackett Meredith; two daughters, Georgeanna Gibson (Chad) and Andrea Kresslein (Matt) both of Bowling Green; a brother, Gary Meredith (Rhonda) of Bee Spring; a sister Jill Vincent (Thomas) of Brownsville; six grandchildren, Abby Gibson, Lexi Gibson, Ella Gibson, Carter Kresslein, Tate Kresslein, and Micah Kresslein; and a nephew, Brett Meredith (Heather).

Henrietta Hayes, 70, of Louisville passed away at 8:06 AM May 24, 2022 at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville with loved ones by her side.

The Louisville native worked at Stewarts Department Store and was a member of Sojourn Church Carlisle and was a long-time member of Bridgehaven. Thank you to Signature South, Amanda and all others that took care of her, the Oechsli family who took her in as their own and Anna at Kindred who danced with her and made her know she was loved. Henrietta was an inspiration to all. She was a daughter of the late Cecil Norman Hayes and Mary Magadaline Hayes. She was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Hayes and one great nephew Michael Anthony Hayes.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM (CDT) Saturday at New Home General Baptist Church with burial to follow in Holly Springs Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM (CDT) Saturday at Gravil Funeral Home. A memorial service will also be held at 10:00 AM (EDT) Thursday June 2 at Sojourn Church Carlisle, 3548 Taylor Blvd., Louisville, KY 40215.

Surviving are a sister Linda Oechsli (Mark) of Louisville; a brother Michael Hayes of Louisville; a niece Sabrina Vaughn (Doug); two great nieces Jamie and Samantha Hester; two great nephews Rylan and Ayyden Vaughn.

Tammie Lashley, age 57, of Mammoth Cave passed away on Monday, May 23, 2022 at the Medical Center at Bowling Green.  The Edmonson County native was born on February 21, 1965 to Loretta Jean Logsdon.  She was married to her best friend, Tommy Lashley, who also survives.

Tammie was a dedicated, lifetime member of the DAV Post 32 Ladies Auxiliary.  She was a former teller for Bank of Edmonson County and Brownsville Deposit Bank.  After banking, she went on to work for the Edmonson County Board of Education.  Tammie was a member of Hill Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a member until her passing.

Besides her husband and mother, she leaves to honor her memory— two aunts, Lola Ashley (Ray) of Mammoth Cave and Pearl Logsdon (Dale) of Sunfish;  two cousins, Jamie Ashley and Hunter Ashley.

Interment will be in the Hill Grove Church Cemetery.

Wilson “Gene” Winstead, age 81, of Leitchfield, departed this life Sunday, May 22, 2022 at Spring View Nursing and Rehab. The Louisville county native was born March 7, 1941, to the late Wilson Hayes Winstead Sr. and Elizabeth Goodman Knott.  He was married Rita Carolyn Winstead , who survives.

Gene was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Coast Guard.  He was a former forklift driver for General Electric in Louisville.

Besides his wife he leaves to honor his memory-- three sons Timothy Winstead of Elizabethtown, Terry Winstead of Boston, KY and Steve F. Chaney of Brownsville; a daughter, Lorie Harris (Roddy) of Louisville; a sister, Bobbie Jean Goodman of Cecilia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  He was also preceded in death by two step-children, Lisa Chaney and William Todd Campbell; two brothers, Ronnie Knott and Jerry Winstead; one sister, Geraldine Winstead.

Dottie Vincent Elmore, age 85, entered into rest on Saturday, May 21, 2022, with her family by her side.   The Kyrock native was the  daughter of the late Luther and Levada Beck Collard.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Kelly Vincent, as well as her second husband, James E. Elmore.

Dottie was a charter member of Barfield United Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia, but in her later years attended Poplar Springs United Baptist Church.  She was a former member of the Green River Order of the Eastern Star. Dottie was a homemaker and dedicated her life to her family.

Born in Toler, Ky on November 20, 1933, Rev. Robert E. Fields Jr. passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in Raleigh, N.C. 

Bob was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and pastor. A lifelong organizer and Presbyterian, he led three devoted and faithful congregations to witness the saving grace of Christ our Lord and Savior: Saint Andrews Presbyterian in Pinch, WV, Montgomery Presbyterian in Montgomery, WV and Hudson Memorial Presbyterian in Raleigh, NC.

He shared his gifts of thoughtful planning and patient optimism with several churches as interim pastor including Outer Banks Presbyterian and Mt. Bethel Presbyterian in Durham, NC. He valued and encouraged informed civic mindedness and positive participation in the democratic process. Bob was the first in his family to attend and graduate college and was a tireless promoter to his family of the value of education.

A graduate of Centre College (A.B.) and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond (M.Div., D.Min.), Bob is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of sixty-five years, Charlene Whittle Fields, his three children, Rob (Beth), Marc (Lori) and Stephanie, eight grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jordan), Marcus (Langley), Anne (Ozan), Robert (Sallie), Allie, Nick, Lily, and Will, and four great-grandchildren, James, Max, Ada and Mira. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert E. Fields, Sr. and Lucy Maynard Fields Lawson and his in-laws, Charles Edward Whittle Sr. and Lillian Skaggs Whittle.

A memorial service to remember Bob was held at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 9, 2022. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.” Psalm 91:14.

James Robert “Jim” Firkins, age 74, of Cave City passed away on May 21, 2022 at his home. The Barren County native was born on April 23, 1948 to the late Robert and Christine Davis Firkins. He was married to Nancy Cox Firkins, who survives. 
Jim retired as a color analyst for R.R. Donnelley and was a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church.

Besides his wife he leaves to honor his memory—three daughters, Tracy McBrayer (Kent) of Bowling Green, Stephanie London (Richie) of Glasgow and Amanda Medley (Wesley) of Glasgow; one son, Scott Firkins of Bowling Green; seven grandchildren, Anne Claire Duvall (Jay Thomas), Ashton McBrayer, Travis London, Branson London, Addison London, Garret Medley and Gracey Medley; two great-grandchildren, Adleigh Cook and Andy Cook; one sister, Kathy Simpson of Glasgow and beloved dog, Maggie. Jim was preceded in death by his beloved dog Sadie.

Sylvia Stinnett, age 91 of Leitchfield, departed this life on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Grayson Nursing and Rehab.  The Edmonson County native was born on April 26, 1931 to the late Carlton and Cora VanMeter Brooks.  She was married to Ovie Stinnett, who also preceded her in death. 

Sylvia was a homemaker, and a member of Nolin United Baptist Church.  She was a former member of the Anneta Volunteer Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary. 

She leaves to honor her memory— her siblings, Nellie Wright of Brownsville, Deborah Reynolds (Dennis) of Glasgow and Reed Brooks of Brownsville; special caregivers, Tammy Ashley, Margaret Langdon and Linda Raymer; several nieces and nephews, along with the caring staff at Grayson Nursing and Rehab that had taken exceptional care of her for many years.  She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Wetzel, David, Ray, Acie, Wayne, Gene, Kenneth, James and Willie Brooks and sisters, Hazel Hardin, Ollie Logsdon, and Bonnie Mann.

Richard Eatmon, age 63, of Park City passed away on Friday, May 20, 2022 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. The Barren County native was born on January 18, 1959 to the later James Edgar and Nancy Smith Eatmon.  He was married to Connie Johnson Eatmon, who survives.

Richard was a former truck driver for Pete Williams and was of the Methodist faith.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening in his spare time.

Mary Pedigo Poole, age 77 of Cave City, KY departed this life on Thursday, May 19 at her residence.  The Barren County native was born on April 29, 1945 to the late Lawrence  and Vera Sexton Pedigo.  She was married to Charles Poole, who preceded her in death. 

She was saved when she was thirteen-years-old at Prices Creek Missionary Baptist Church, and later became a member of Big Meadow Missionary Baptist Church.  Mary loved being in church with her family, and would often attend New Hope, Cedar Hill and Rolling Hills Baptist churches. She worked with her husband on the farm and in their home, caring for the needs of her family.

She leaves to honor her memory— two children, Eddie Atkins (Emerlyn) of Westmoreland, TN and Elizabeth Ann Sanders (Steve) of Munfordville; six grandchildren, Craig Sanders (Katrina), Chris Atkins (Angie), James Atkins, Bethany Sanders, Mary Atkins and Joseph Atkins; one great-granddaughter, Linzy Atkins; two siblings, Dorothy Carter of Cave City and Gene Pedigo of Park City, along with several nieces and nephews.  Besides her husband and parents, she was also predeceased in death by her siblings, Jerry Pedigo, Shirley Pedigo, Ruby Bragg and Nancy Johnson.

Robert E. “Bobby” White III, age 56, of Munfordville passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 in Glasgow. The Hammond, Indiana native was born on October 7, 1965 to Robert Earl Jr. and Marcella Goatley White of Cave City, who survives.

Bobby was saved as a young man at Stockholm United Baptist Church.  He enjoyed building model cars and collecting vintage music memorabilia.  Bobby was an avid race fan and you could find him announcing several racing events in the area.

Besides his parents, he leaves to honor his memory, his sister, Stephany White of Cave City, along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was preceded in death by a special friend, Betty Lankey.

Internment will be in the Union Light Church Cemetery.

Marcella Ann Goins, age 82, entered into rest on Monday, May 16, 2022, with her family by her side.   The Edmonson County native was the  daughter of the late Paul Harrison and Annie Rich Sanders.  She was married to Joe Goins, who survives.

Marcella worked for years as a receptionist for Trace Die Cast.  She was a member of Jock United Baptist Church, where she remained a member until her passing. Marcella was saved at the age of thirteen and remained a diligent worker for the Lord until her final breath.  She loved to be on the go and was always looking for the next adventure, but her favorite place to be was with her family and friends.

Besides her husband, she leaves to honor her memory— a son, Greg Hudson (Vicki) of Brownsville; two daughters, Roxanne Moore (Randy) and Paula Vincent (James) both of Franklin; Mamaw to fifteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren; Aunt Cella to several nieces and nephews and a friend to many.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Hudson Sledge; a grandson Adam Hudson; siblings, DePaul Sanders, Judith Gaw, Brenda Sanders, Richard Sanders, William Harvey Sanders and Annie Durall.

Michael Denham, age 51 of Brownsville, departed this life on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Hospice House in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born on March 13, 1971 and was lovingly adopted into the family of  Clifford Denham and the late Thelma Elmore Denham when he was only four months old.

Michael worked as a machine operator at Nemak.  He was saved as a young boy at Pleasant Grove “Miller Hill” Missionary Baptist Church, and later joined Wingfield United Baptist Church, where he remained a member. 

He leaves to honor his memory-- his children, Noah and Emilee Denham of Brownsville; his father, Clifford Denham of Brownsville and his brother, Willie Denham of Leitchfield.

Jean Dial Wilkes, age 92, departed this life with her family by her side on Friday, April 29, 2022 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.   The Warren and Edmonson County native was the only daughter of the late Estil Dial and Essie Jackson Dial.

Jean was a beloved member of her community. She dedicated her life to service and caring for those closest to her. Prior to retiring, Jean practiced as a registered nurse for over sixty-years, worked with her husband as a co-owner of Wilkes Clinic in Brownsville, and served in numerous civic and social organizations. ‘Ruby Jean’, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was loving, compassionate, generous, and witty.     

She leaves to honor her memory— a son, Brad G. Wilkes and his wife, Lynn of Beaufort, NC; a granddaughter, Brandie Wilkes Garner and her husband, Dexter; a great- grandson, Hindrix Grayson of Grifton, NC; her husband, Chester Bays of Bowling Green; stepson, Danny Bays and his wife, Susan of Bowling Green, along with a host of adored cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Dr. Marcus B. Wilkes and Kenneth Beck and two brothers, Fred W. and Paul X. Dial.

Mary Alice Hanson, age 91, of Jeffersontown, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2022 in Louisville.  The Edmonson County native was born on January 4, 1931 to the late Carl Irvin and Semarimis Agnes Doyel Hanson.  She was married to the late William H. Butts, Jr.

Mary Alice was not afraid of hard work.  She received her Bachelors of Education degree from Western Kentucky University, Masters of Religious Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and several other degrees from Berea College and University of Louisville.  She was an educator early on in the Caverna Independent  School district and for Jefferson County Schools.  Mary Alice also worked along side her later husband and was part owner of Home Insulating Company.  Her other accomplishments were receiving her real estate license and becoming a broker.  Mary Alice was a Kentucky Colonel and was a member of Cedar Hill United Baptist Church.

She leaves to honor her memory— her five nephews and a niece, Ronnie Hanson (Linda), David Hanson (Sharon), Randy Gonterman (Pam), Steve Hanson (Jennifer), Stanley Gonterman (Karen), and Julie Gackenbach (Preston Rutledge) along with several cousins, great and great-great nieces and nephews.  She was also preceded in death by brothers, Conrad Pete, Lester “Boots”, Coy, Garner, H.C. and Donald Gene Hanson; sisters, Maydell Hanson and Josephine Gonterman.

Verma Cowles, age 68 of Brownsville, departed this life on Friday, May 6, 2022 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.  The Edmonson County native was born on March 9, 1954 to the late Frank and Pansy Huddleston Farris.  She was married to Kenneth Cowles, who also preceded her in death.

Verma was of the Baptist faith. She worked for many years as a teacher at Edmonson County Head Start.

Theo D. Hammons, 99 of Chalybeate passed peacefully at Genesis Health Edmonson Care on Wednesday, May 4, 2022.
The Edmonson County native was a daughter of the late Luther M. and Mary Denham Long and wife of the late Vernon D. Hammons. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Marie, Mollie, Ruby, Gerald, Earl and Marcel. She was a homemaker and a member of the Otter Gap Baptist Church.

Leaving to cherish her memory is two sons, John M. Hammons (Marsha) and Vernon M. Hammons (Joyce); four grandchildren, Marlisa Etnoyer (Scott), Eric Hammons (Stephanie), Marcie Dexter (Eric) and Johna Walden (Jeff); several nieces and nephews.

Cecil R. Massey (C.R.) age 70 of Brownsville, departed this life in the early morning of Monday, May 2, 2022, at his home.  He was born on January 12, 1952, to the late Howard and Jewell Webb Massey. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Teresa Massey, a sister Linda Johnson, and a brother Larry Massey, and his beloved dog Dixie. He leaves to honor his memory; a daughter, Lori Burnett (Jesse); a granddaughter, Lexus Burnett-Pierce (Austin); and several nieces, nephews, great nephews and great nieces.

Cecil was raised up in Brownsville, but also spent some of his childhood in Louisville, where as a 12 year-old boy he found salvation at Montgomery General Baptist Church and was baptized in the Ohio River on the Indiana side by Bro. Lawrence Stice.

Cecil went on to marry the love of his life, Barbara T, on May 10, 1971. The following year, they welcomed a beautiful baby girl Lori Ann on Valentine’s Day! 

Cecil worked as an EMT for the Edmonson County Ambulance in the late 70s and went on to work at Mammoth Cave National Park before retiring from Weyerhaeuser.

In the last few years, he remarked that the power of prayer can move people, and he hoped that others would know what Jesus could do for them, just as he had done for him. Husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, & friend were just some of the many titles he held. Cecil was known as a simple man and would always be the first to offer help, if someone was in need. Though we may be in pain here on earth, he is now at peace and free from this worrisome world. His love for his family will remain with the ones he loved here on earth. May he be reunited with Teresa and their dog Dixie.
 
Interment will be in Red Hill Cemetery.

Tony G. Childress, age 80 of Louisville, departed this life on Monday, May 2, 2022 at Norton Audubon Hospital.  The Barren County native was born on April 20, 1940 to the late Dewey and Ola Glass Childress. 

Tony retired from Inland Container as a machinist, and was a member of Cherry Springs United Baptist Church. 

He leaves to honor his memory— a daughter, Kim Seifers of Jeffersonville, IN; son, Bobby Childress (Anita) of Caneyville and four siblings, Merle Childress (Helen) of Louisville, Pearl Haynes of Brownsville, Joby Childress of Louisville and Magaline Meredith (Junior) of Cave City.

Barbara “Grannie” Ann Sanders Watt, age 82, of Oakland departed this life on April 30th, 2022 at Hospice of Southern Kentucky after a long battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.

An Edmonson County Native, Barbara was born on April 11, 1940 to the late Reverend Charlie and Millie Highbaugh Sanders. Always a family woman, Barbara cherished spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Any given day, you could find her in her kitchen cooking up a storm with fresh vegetables from her garden- a true member of the Homemakers Club. When she wasn’t donning her apron, you could find her sewing, gardening, traveling, and giving back to her beloved Oakland community. She was an active member of Oakland Baptist Church. Barbara retired from Oakland Elementary School where she gave 18 years of service as the Cafeteria Manager. She was incredibly passionate about her work and was instrumental in implementing the Breakfast Program for Warren County Schools. She was also a recipient of the Kentucky Colonel and Good Ole Boy award.

Barbara is preceded in death by five sisters including Cora Turner, Christine Gipson, Daphna Sanders, Delta Sanders, Josie Taylor, and three brothers including Clarence, Japath, and Duel Sanders.

She leaves many who loved her dearly to honor her memory. These include her husband, Billy Watt, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage. Her children Teresa Rae (Joey) Keith, Beverly (Kevin) Lovelace, Keith Rigdon, Roger (Ellen) Watt, Richard (Sandy) Rigdon, Donna (Rick) Coffman, and Robbie (fiance- Carmen Bates) Watt, sixteen grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. Her two sisters, Betty (Michael) Childress of Munfordville and Cleo (Bill) Brown of Mammoth Cave as well as two brothers, Oda (Rosalee) Sanders of Pig and Billy (Barbara) Sanders of Mammoth Cave, as well as many nieces and nephews, also live on to honor her.

All services will take place at Hardy and Son Funeral Home in Bowling Green. Visitation will be Thursday May 5th, 2022 from 2pm-7pm and Friday May 6th, 2022 from 9am-11am with a service immediately following. Interment service will take place at Smiths Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at Hospice of Southern Kentucky in Bowling Green.
