Joyce Ann Wood, age 82 of Smiths Grove, peacefully departed this life, with her family by her side on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in the comforts of her daughter’s home.
The Hart County native was born on March 7, 1942 to the late William and Ruby Hazelwood Jaggers. She was married to her husband, Phillip Wood, who also preceded her in death. Joyce was a member of Northtown United Baptist Church. She was the friendly face that greeted customers at Walmart in Bowling Green for many years. She loved her family above all, and spent most of her life working hard to provide for them. She leaves to honor her memory— her children, Michelle Skaggs (Scott) of Chalybeate, Kim Wood of Smiths Grove, Larry Smith of Smiths Grove and David Wood (Kim) of Scottsville; grandchildren, Tiffany Smith (Jason), Tyler Skaggs (Morgan), Samantha Shemwell (Allen), Caleb Skaggs (Maddie), Holden Skaggs (Baley), Ashley Koch (Jon) and Cori Emberton (Brad); thirteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Jewell Hawkins, Ewell Jaggers, Alice Burd, Bonnie Jones, Ricky Jaggers and Jerry Jaggers; daughter-in-law, Patricia Marr and special caregiver, Cheryl White Wilson. David was a former electrical technician at R.R. Donnelly. He was what some would call a perfectionist and gave 110% at everything he did. This is evident as you drive by his house and see his meticulous lawn and landscape. He was passionate about being outdoors or exercising, whether it was hiking, being a “gym rat” or watching his son or anyone playing baseball. He never passed up a chance to catch a good movie or shoot a round of pool. His true love was his family, and all that were fortunate enough to be his friend. He leaves to honor his memory-- his son, Derek Self (Emmi); grandsons, Slayten Weller Self and Jett Jameson Self; siblings, Judy Smith, Debra Batliner and Danny Self (Debbie); special friend, Beth Page, along with several nephews, nieces and cousins. He was such a kind man, and a true neighbor to his friends and those in need. He retired as an educator from Edmonson County Schools. Jimmy was an outdoorsman and cherished his time spent working on his farm. He was an animal lover, and enjoyed his Irish Setters, Sham and Scarlett, and his red setter, Blake. His favorite role was being Poppa to his beautiful granddaughters, Mallory and McLaine. He adored them and was one of their biggest supporters in any and all their endeavors. Besides his wife, Suzanne, he leaves to honor his memory— his daughter, Caroline A. He was preceded in death by a son, Randall Coates; two brothers, Roy Mattingly and William Mattingly; a granddaughter, Ashley Dawn; and two grandsons, Joshua Denver and Landon Lee. Billie “Jane” Wiest of Louisville, KY died into eternal life on May 16, 2024 in Boston, MA. Jane was born to Ivan Ashley and Jewell Duvall on August 22,1937.
Raised on a farm in Sweeden, KY with her six siblings, Jane entered the Kentucky Baptist Hospital nursing school with her sister JoAnn in Louisville, KY. After graduation Jane worked as a registered nurse in a doctor’s office. It was there that she met her husband of 59 years, James Edwin Wiest. Later she practiced industrial nursing at General Electric before becoming a full-time parent. Jane was an avid reader who enjoyed gardening, bowling, theology, and politics. She and Jim were devoted to their family, especially their three grandchildren. Jane was a longtime member of Westport Road Baptist Church in Louisville and more recently was a regular attender of First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, MA, where her daughter is pastor. Jane is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister JoAnn Ashley. Remaining to give thanks for her life are her daughter Rev. Ashlee Wiest-Laird, her son-in-law Dr. Lance Laird; her beloved grandchildren, Naim, Aidan, and Mycah; her sisters Loretta, Emogene, Edith, and Hilda, her brother Leondal, and many friends and neighbors who will miss her deeply. Born on the 10th of March in the year 1941, Jerry was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle. His life will forever be treasured in the lives of his devoted wife of 58 years, Carrie Skaggs; his daughters, Leigh Skaggs, and Lesli Garland (Todd); his beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth Cunningham (Alex Klingsmith); his adored great-grandsons, Kennith Cunningham, and Damian Klingsmith; his dear sister, Patricia Saylor and uncle to; Tom Williams (Reisa), Jeff Williams (Lola), Ronnie Williams (Peggy), Jennifer Gellhaus, David Potter (Libby) and Steven Potter. He has now rejoined his dearly departed mother, Erman Basham Houchin; his father, Warner A. Skaggs; and his stepmother, Sarah J. Skaggs. Jerry was a pillar of the community, recognized for his dedication to education as a revered teacher, as a coach in baseball, and as an esteemed textbook salesperson. His academic achievements were highlighted by a master’s in business administration obtained from Western Kentucky University. An enthusiast of the outdoors, Jerry delighted in the simple pleasures of fishing and golfing. He held the honor of being a founding member of the Delta Kappa Nu Fraternity at Western Kentucky University, a testament to his lifelong commitment to brotherhood and scholarship. As a respected 32° Mason and Shriner, Jerry's generous spirit and service to others left an indelible mark within the community. Per Jerry’s Request, there will not be a service. The Metcalfe County native was owner and operator of Nolin Vault Co. and founder and pastor of Harvest Time Church. He was a son of the late Theodore “Bill” Robertson and Ella Rhinehart Robertson. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Saling; a grandson, Matthew Ervin; three great grandchildren, Grant Burden, Avery Burden and Rhett Burden; five brothers, Travis Robertson, Robert Lee Robertson, Henry Robertson, Jimmy Robertson and Bobby Robertson; and four sisters, Dorothy Hawkins, Avis Jewell, Ruth Beard and Doris Wilson. She was proudly pursing her dream of becoming a Social Worker, with a special interest in addiction intervention, while making the Dean's list at Strayer University.
