Edward D. “Ed” Houchin, age 92,of Brownsville, departed this life on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at his residence. The Edmonson County native was born on December 15, 1926 to the late Raymond and Aline Vincent Houchin. He was married to his faithful wife of sixty-seven years, Betty Lindsey Houchin, who preceded him in death.
Ed was a retired businessman, having owned and operated several local businesses. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, a member of Poplar Spring United Baptist Church, Park City Masonic Lodge, and was a Kentucky Colonel. Ed served on the Bank of Edmonson County Board of Directors from 1964 to 2008, and was named Director Emeritus in 2008. He leaves to honor his memory-- five sons, Allen Houchin of Scottsville, Tommy Houchin (Lottie) of Chalybeate, David “Dink” Houchin and Ronnie Houchin (Teresa) both of Brownsville and Ricky Houchin (LaDonna) of Bowling Green; daughter-in-law, Vicki Houchin of Louisville; one sister, Dorothy Yokley (Wendell) of Bowling Green; twelve grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Vinnie Farmer, Leona Witcher and Christine Jones; three brothers, Tommy, Jessie and Junior Bowles and one granddaughter and two great great grandchildren. He was a truck driver and a mechanic for the Warren County School System and a member of Shadyland Church of Christ. He was married to Joyce Margaret Arterburn for forty-nine and a half years before her death from cancer in 2005.
Charlie was a retired twenty-year military veteran of the United States Air Force and received an Air Force Commendation for his service in Vietnam. He was a fifty-year member of the Masonic Order, Master Mason Degree, International Union of Operating Engineers for forty-four years, Mammoth Cave National Park Association Board of Directors, Edmonson County Industrial Authority Board of Directors, Barren River Area Development District (BRADD), Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and a member of Park City United Methodist Church. He was proud of his accomplishments of raising funds, planning and project management for Park City Veteran Memorial Wall. He was also instrumental in preparing grants and designing route names and granite signage for Park City Bicycle Walking Path. As a tribute to him, he was honored with the Barren County Patriot Award in 2004. Born in Edmonson County, he was the son of the late Leslie and Margoline Higginbotham. He graduated from Western Kentucky and retired from Southern School Supply. He proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam war. He enjoyed playing golf and could tell many a story about his visit to Augusta National and an avid UK fan. He is survived by his spouse, Mary Ann Higginbotham, one daughter, Mindy Ann Taul (Chris), two grandchildren, Brittany Ryherd and Cameron Oliphant and one great granddaughter, Avery Ann Ryherd. Mr. Higginbotham is also survived by two brothers: David “Butch” Higginbotham and Phil Higginbotham (Shirley), three sisters: Juanita Pedigo, Sherry Johnson and Delora Craine. Donita was a retired health educator for Western Kentucky University, and a member of Community Church of Franklin. Besides her father, she leaves to honor her memory— one son, Nicholas Lashley of Bowling Green; one sister, Karen Clines (Johnie) of Brownsville; one brother, Dale Cassady (Kayla) of Bowling Green and one niece, Emily Gibson (Roy) of Bee Spring; three great nephews, Ryan Gibson, Rance Gibson and Ethan Gibson and one great niece, Emma Gibson.
