Violet Hogan Lewis, age 88 of Horse Cave, KY, departed this life on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at T.J. Sampson Hospital. The Barren County native born on September 4, 1931 to the late Allen L. Hogan and Mary Elizabeth Martin Hogan. She was married to Jay Lewis, who also preceded her in death.
Violet was a loving, devoted mother and lifelong friend to all that knew her. She began working as a waitress at the Mammoth Cave Hotel when she was only 13 years old. That was the beginning of a career in serving others that lasted 49 years. Violet loved everyone she met. To know her was to love her. She lived in close contact with God and centered her life around God’s will knowing He had the bigger, better plan. We will miss her deeply but we know she is doing a jitterbug with Jesus! She was born April 30, 1934 at Sunny Point, Kentucky to Wilbur and Luvena (Bratcher) Davis. Much of her life was lived in the Louisville and Bowling Green, Kentucky areas. She married the love of her life, J.B. Ellis and together they built a faith based life raising their three children in Louisville, KY. As a young family, they enjoyed swimming and boating together. Rita, as she was fondly known, had a green thumb and she raised various vegetables that she canned and shared with others. She and J. B. also loved to travel to far away places such as Hawaii, Chile and the Middle East. Upon retirement, she and J.B. moved to Bowling Green, KY where they spent time with longtime friends. She became a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she volunteered for community outreach activities. She was also actively involved in Bowling Green Senior Services where she planned events and was a volunteer water aerobics instructor. But utmost in her life was her family and she remained interested in the lives of her children and grandchildren. After retirement, she was actively involved in her community serving as a member of the Capitol Hill Homemakers, Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, the local Foster Care Review Board and The Council of Aging. Mildred was proceeded in death by her devoted husband of 53 years, Rodney Bryant; a son, Rodney Dwayne Bryant, brothers Otis Young, Prentice Young, Otha Young and Howard Young; sisters, Mae Parsley and Maxine Lowe. Mildred retired from Desa International and assisted her husband with the operation of their family farm. She was a member of the Smiths Grove United Methodist Church. Mildred also was a member of the Chalybeate Homemakers and Women of the Moose. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother first and foremost. She treasured time with all her family and embraced every moment with them. She especially enjoyed her role as "Nanny" to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others. She always looked forward to attending the "Senior Day" at the Smiths Grove Presbyterian Church. She leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Elaine Bryant Yates and her husband, Roger; a son, David Bryant; a sister Rhea Palmer. The Edmonson County native was a son of the late Raymond and Betty Meredith Peger and preceded in death by a sister, Edna Beth Peger. He was the husband of the late Gloria Tarter Peger and Tammy Carroll Peger. Sherman was a heavy equipment operator in construction. He was a Kentucky Colonel and was the first quarterback of the first team to play for Edmonson County High School. His survivors include a daughter, Selena Peger and a son, Joshua Peger; two grandchildren, Cody and Destiney Peger, one great grandchild, Donovan, three sisters, Martha Hatfield (Mike), Jan Hornbeak (Richard), Happiness Miller; one brother Michael Peger (LeNora) and several nieces and nephews. Avery Martin Logsdon, age 72 of Wingfield, KY departed this life on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. He was born in Edmonson County on October 19, 1947 to the late Raymond Earl and Lillie Mae Glass Logsdon, and married to Shelia Davis Logsdon, who survives.
Avery was a member of the UAW and Pleasant Grove “Miller Hill” Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and song leader. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and was a retired tool and die maker for General Motors. Besides his wife he leaves to honor his memory two daughters, Jeanne Bullock (Brad) of Wingfield and Debbie Doyle (Darren) of Chalybeate; four grandchildren, Madison Doyle, Cole Bullock, Alyssa Doyle and Chase Bullock; three siblings, Virginia Hawks (Ronell), Freddie Logsdon (Vickie) and Linda Lillard; honorary son, David Logsdon (Misti) along with several nieces and nephews.
