Howard Mitchell Madison

Howard Mitchell Madison, 96 of Rocky Hill passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014

The Edmonson County native was a son of the late Lon M and Nora Hardison Madison. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elbert, Shelby and George Madison and two sisters, Lois Doyle and Sopha Cook; two sons, Brian and Brent Madison and a grandson, Todd Mitchell Booker.

Mitchell was a U.S. Army Veteran during World War II with the 13th Armored Division under General George S. Patton. After returning home Mitchell was a farmer, owner Madison's grocery and Madison's Plumbing and Electric. He was also a member of Mount Vernon Church of Christ. He particularly enjoyed raising his black Angus cattle throughtout his life.

His survivors include his wife of 70 years, Flora Martin Madison. a daughter, Teresa Madison; granddaughter, Ronna Cassady (Keith); grandson, Ryan Booker (Leigh); six great grandchildren, Caitlan Laird, Hunter Booker, Spencer Cassady, Madison Crane, Ryleigh Booker and Desirae Owens. A seventh great grandchild is expected next month to Ryan and Leigh Booker. Three sisters, Miriam Beams (Emmett), Pauline Rutledge, Christine Toms and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation 1:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel.

Leeawona Hayes Manning, 57, of Sweeden, KY  departed this life on Sunday, December 28, 2014 in Nashville, TN.  The Edmonson County native was born on  September 7, 1957 to the late Lola Vincent Hayes and Athel Hayes, who survives. 

She was a retired registered nurse and a member of Bee Spring Missionary Baptist Church. 

In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Galen L. Manning; one daughter, Shannon Porter (fiance’ Ben McCoy) of Chalybeate; one son, Jeremy Porter of Rhoda; two grandchildren, Gary Dale Porter and Savannah Porter and two brothers, Joe Hayes (Jan) of Sweeden and Vince Hayes (Billie) of Park City.

Burial will be in Bee Spring Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Malcolm Doyle officiating.

Bridget Cloyd Jaggers, 38, of Anneta, KY, passed away Friday, December 26, 2014 in Leitchfield. The Grayson County native was born March 18, 1976 to the late Mike Cloyd and Gail Cloyd  who survives.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hill Grove United Baptist Church.

She is survived by her fiance’, Timmy Tomes of Anneta; three sons, Cody Brooks of Cub Run, Devin Jaggers and Gavin Tomes both of Anneta; mother, Gail Cloyd of Brownsville; two sisters, Crissy McGrew of Bee Spring and Billie Cloyd of Mammoth Cave;cousin, Lea Cloyd of Lawrenceburg; three nieces, Hannah McGrew, Kaitlyn Harper and Samantha Gregory.

Funeral service will be officiated by Bro. Joe Logan with burial in the  Jock Church Cemetery.

Emma Catherine Haydon Davidson, 103, of Park City passed away peacefully Friday, December 26, 2014 at home surrounded by family and friends. She was born on April 5, 1911 in Barren County to the late Harry Johnson Haydon and the late Lola Graham Haydon and was married to the late Harry Glen Davidson.

She worked at the Park City post office for 15 years and was a member Walnut Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher and pianist

She is survived by one daughter, Glynna Davidson Hogan (Cleo, Jr.) of Park City; one sister, Sarah Frances Parker of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Sheila Edmunds (Chris) , Ricky Lane Davidson (Nancee) and Wendy Mitford (Paul); six great grandchildren, Haley Johnson (Matt), Seth Edmunds, Tyler Edmunds, Luke Edmunds, Alex Mitford, Nick Mitford and Michael Mitford; one great-great grandson, Mattox Johnson and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her son, James LeRoy Davidson.

Services will be officiated by Bro. Larry Lowe with burial in the Walnut Hill Church Cemetery, Park City, KY.

Joe Patton, 79, of Bee Spring, KY, passed away Thursday, December 25, 2014 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County  native was the son of the late Andy and Susie Bruce Patton and was the husband of Janell Farris Patton. 

He was an Army veteran, retired from G.E., a dairy farmer and a member of Anetta United Baptist Church.  

He is survived by his wife, Janell Farris Patton of Bee Spring; two sons, Joe Don Patton (Sherry) of Sweeden and Jeff Patton of Bee Spring; one daughter, Sherry Sanders (Jimmy Dean) of Bee Spring; one sister, Jean McCoy of Lousiville; four grandchildren, Coty Patton (Katie), Verena Patton, Ethan Sanders (Heather) and Payton Sanders;  two great grandchildren, Hunter Patton and Emma Patton.

Donald Lee “ Cold Bear” Gossett, 66, of Horse Cave, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at his residence. He was born on October 16, 1948 in Barren County to the late James Russell Gossett and the late Agnes Marie Harvey Gossett and was married to Betty J. Eldridge Gossett whom survives.

He was a Baptist and a member of Beaver Creek Native American Tribe of Albany, KY.

He is also survived by one stepdaughter, Melinda Rose and husband Clint; three brothers, Floyd Gossett, Sherman Gossett and Stephen Gossett all of Cave City; four sisters, Margaret Gossett, Rita Gossett of Cave City, Sandy Pedigo and husband Wesley of Horse Cave and Brenda Anderson and husband Tony of Columbus, IN

Rose Garrett, 56, of Brownsville passed away at 8:36 PM Dec. 12, 2014 at her home.

The Edmonson County native was a registered nurse at The Medical Center at Bowling Green and Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center. She ...was a daughter of the late Paul Norman Johnson and Betty Hope Odell Britt Johnson. She was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Johnson; and a step sister, Faye Fraim.

Funeral will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday at New Home General Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Dit Vincent Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-9 PM Monday, 9 AM-9 PM Tuesday and after 9 AM Wednesday at Gravil Funeral Home.

Surviving are her husband, Dale Garrett; a daughter, April Leeann Garrett; two sons, Adam Garrett (Debbie) of Bowling Green and Andy Garrett (April) of Brownsville; three sisters, Sue Bratcher, Linda Warnell (Norman) and Ann Bullock (Barry) all of Brownsville; a step sister, Rose Bratcher of Morgantown; and five grandchildren, Hunter Garrett, Blake Garrett, Courtney Garrett, Addison Garrett and Zander Garrett.

Juanita Sanders Vincent

 Juanita Sanders Vincent, 93, of Bee Spring passed away Dec. 12, 2014 in Lindseyville.

The Edmonson County native was a homemaker and a seamstress who was employed by Kellwood Co. She was a daughter of the late F. E. ...Sanders and Emma Carroll Sanders. She was preceded in death by a son, Ricky "Pickle" Vincent.

Funeral will be at 11 AM Monday at Hubsfield Holiness Church, where she was a member, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 PM Sunday and after 9 AM Monday at the church. Gravil Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are a son, Rocky Vincent of Bee Spring; five grandchildren, Clint Vincent, Shelli Vincent Keesee, Josh Vincent, Spencer Vincent and Trevor Vincent; and three great grandchildren, Jordan and Jayden Keesee and Destiny Vincent.

Roger Wayne Phelps, 65 of Smiths Grove passed away peacefully
Monday, December 15, 2014 at the Commonwealth Regional Specialty
Hospital after a lengthy illness.


He was a son of the late Jim and Novice Childress Phelps and is
preceded by two sisters and one brother and one niece. He was a member
of Lawrence Chapel Baptist Church, a heavy equipment operator, and
chairman of the board to several coffee meetings which he enjoyed each
and every day with his extended families.


Survivors include his wife, Faye Phelps; a daughter, Michelle
Phelps; a stepson, Jamie Lawrence and wife Elisha; five grandchildren,
two step grandchildren, Kaylee and Kellis Lawrence; three great
grandchildren; a sister, Carlyon Belcher and husband Jim; three nieces
and three nephews and several cousins and a host of friends.


Funeral service 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home,
Bowling Green Chapel with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation
1:00 -8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Rebecca ‘Becky’ Keith Fields, 60, of Cedar Springs, KY passed away Saturday December 13, 2014 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green.  The Edmonson County native was born on March 27, 1954 to the late Ruben Keith and was preceded in death by her son Steven ‘Kelly’ Fields. 

She is survived by her mother, Mary Reeder Keith; son, Joey Fields (Tracy); sister, Brenda Dunning (Paul); brother, David Keith; two grandchildren, Kristin Rogers and Kassie Tucker; a great grandchild Katalyiah Rogers; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at J.C. Kirby and Son Broadway Chapel with burial at Lambert Cemetery in Edmonson County.  Visitation will be on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Thomas B. Webb, 90, of  Mammoth Cave, KY, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014 at his residence.  The  Hart County  native was the son of the late Jim and Ollie Webb and the husband of the late Bernice Logsdon Webb. He was a WW II Navy veteran, a maintenance worker for Mammoth Cave National Park and a member of Jerico Baptist Church .  

He is survived by four daughters, Vennie Rich (Paul) of Mammoth Cave, Judy Waddle (Jim) of Mammoth Cave, Mary Brooks (Danny) of Cub Run and Doris Wilson of Mammoth Cave; one brother, Marion Webb of Leitchfield; four sisters, Betty Kerr of Port Gratist, MI, Kathy Rose of Harned, KY, Barbara Underwood of Buffalo, KY and Ellen Cooper of Windson, MO; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. 

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Webb, James Webb and Hilbert Webb and three sisters, Jane Smith, Ella Webb and Louise Anderson.

Services will be officiated by Jerry Patton at Wilkins Cemetery.

June Houchins Priddy, 94, of Smiths Grove, KY, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014 in Bowling Green. The Edmonson County native was born January 11, 1920 to the late Virgil and Gertie Kinser Houchins and was the wife of the late Oran Priddy.

She was a retired cafeteria worker for the Edmonson County Schools and a member of Chalybeate United Baptist Church , Chalybeate Homemakers and Red Hat Society.

She is survived by one son, Dennis Oran Priddy (Lecia) of Smiths Grove; one daughter, Theresa Priddy Harshman of Pensacola, Fl; one brother, Jimmie Houchins (Nellie)  of Chalybeate; two sisters, Martha Schultz (Bill) of Louisville and Mary Alice Vincent (Johnny Pete) of Brownsville; two grandsons, Joseph Daniel Priddy and William Andrew Harshman and one granddaughter, Rachel Elise Priddy.

Services will be officiated by Bro. Richard Minton and Bro. Malcolm Doyle  with burial in the Kinser Cemetery.

Carl Othel Holder

Carl Othel Holder, 91 of Park City went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 11, 2014. 

The Warren County native was a son of the late Morgan Thomas and Hallie Wingfield Holder and husband of the late Celia Beck Holder. He was preceded in death by a son Carl Dwight Holder, eight brothers and sisters. He was a WKU maintenance retiree. Carl was owner of C&C Gift Shop, Log Cabin Trading Post and Holders Concrete all in Cave City, he loved antiques and a member of Caveland Baptist Church. Carl was a WWII Army veteran.

His survivors include two daughters, Gloria Childress (Lee) and Agnes Earleen Poteet; three sons, Ricky Othel Holder (Janet), Chris Holder (Tammy), Todd Holder (Missy Jo); one sister, Lova Vincent (Owen D); 20 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren.

Funeral service 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home Bowling Green Chapel, burial in Cave City Cemetery with Military Honors by the Glasgow DAV. Visitation 5:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

William B. Lane

William B. Lane, 88, of Daytona Beach, FL formerly of Sweeden, KY, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014 at his residence. The Edmonson County native was born October 31, 1926 to the late Ernest Edward and Chlorene Musick Lane and was the husband of Geneva Blanton Lane who survives.  He was a World War II and Korean war army veteran, a retired merchant and Postmaster in Sweeden. He was a member of Washington Meredith Masonic Lodge #355 F&AM and former Sunday School superintendant of Sweeden Missionary Baptist Church. 

Beside his wife he is survived by one daughter, Becky Goad (Lamar) of Sweeden;  two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Bradley Lane; a brother, Ernest Edward Lane II; three sisters, Annabelle Vincent, Margaret Starnes and Jonell Lane

Funeral service will be officiated by Bro. Jerry Patton with burial in the Sweeden Church Cemetery.

Cameron  Drake “Tiago” Poteet, infant son of Dustin Poteet and  Ashley Sydnor passed away  Friday, December 5, 2014 at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.

He was born October 29, 2014 in Bowling Green and besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Emerson  Poteet of Rockfield; one sister, Khloe Poteet of Smiths Grove; maternal grandparents, James and Sandra Sydnor of Park City; paternal grandparents, Ricky and Robin Poteet of Chalybeate and Tammy Glass of Bowling Green; maternal great grandmother, Marie Davidson of Park City; paternal great grandparents, Hubert Poteet of Wingfield, Brenda Poteet of Wingfield and Durine Glass of Bowling Green; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Waylan Dean Shipley,  84, of  Park City,  passed away  Thursday, December 4, 2014 at his residence. He was born  August 27, 1930 in Barren Co. to the late  Elijah T. Shipley and the late Virgie Allison Berry Shipley and was married to the late Willo Dean Downey Shipley.  He was a carpenter for J. Les Brown Construction , a  Korean War Navy veteran, a  50 yr. member of Cave City Masonic Lodge # 790,  member of Caverna Eastern Star # 252 and Little Bethel Baptist Church where he was a deacon. 

He is survived by one daughter, Marlinda Froedge (Ricky) of Cave City; one sister, Colleen Franklin of Elizabethtown and four nieces.

Bro. Larry Lowe and Bro. Brent Spillman will officiate. Burial will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery with military honors by Barren County D.A.V.   Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity of  one’s  choice.

Alvin Barbee, 86, of Cedar Springs, KY, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014 in Bowling Green.  The Edmonson County native was born May 9, 1928 to the late Omer and Lillie Parker Barbee and was the husband of Pearl Doyle Barbee who survives.  He was a  Korean war army veteran, a retired vocational agriculture teacher for Edmonson Co. and Russell Co. school systems and a farmer. He was a member of  Brownsville Odd Fellows, Kentucky Retired Teachers Assoc., church clerk and deacon of Cedar Springs United Baptist Church. 

Beside his wife he is survived by one daughter, Kimberly Sanders (Tony) of Cedar Springs; one granddaughter, Lillee Ashton Sanders of Cedar Springs; one brother, Belvy Barbee (Bonnie) of Rocky Hill; two sisters, Virginia Houchin (George) of Cedar Springs and Pat Demunbrun (John) of Bowling Green; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Davis (Doc) of Louisville and Joyce Jordan of Brownsville; several nieces and nephews.
