 Boyce Dale Flener II, 53, of Morgantown died on February 2, 2016, at Hospice of Southern Kentucky, in Bowling Green, KY. He was born in Warren County on Sunday, April 8, 1962 to Boyce Dale and Linda Coots Flener.
The Morgantown native was a retired teacher, having served as high school band director and music teacher in Crittenden County, Ohio County, and Butler County in Kentucky. He was also a licensed real estate agent and Level II Land Steward in Kentucky with Whitetail Properties Real Estate, based in Pittsfield, Ill. He had been a member of his family group, the southern gospel quartet, The Travelers. In addition he was the co-founder and lead singer and of the southern gospel quartet, the Crossmen Quartet for 23 years. He performed with his group on the Grand Ole Opry stage many times, the National Quartet Convention, and in churches and concert halls all over the nation. He was honored with both Best Male Vocalist and Best Lead Vocalist two years in a row by the Kentucky Gospel Music Association. The Crossmen Quartet was nominated for the Horizon Group of the year in 1995 by the Singing News Fan awards. His Ohio County High School marching band was State Finalist in 1993 and band after band of his, scored distinguished ratings in both marching band competitions and concert band festivals. He received the Excellence In Teaching award by his faculty and staff at Ohio County Middle School in 2011, and was presented with the award at Campbellsville University. Flener was a 1980 graduate of Butler County High School, and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education from Western Kentucky University. He was a charter member and board member of the Butler County Arts Guild. He was a member of the Quality Deer Management Association and the National Turkey Federation and a former member of the Southern Gospel Music Guild. Flener was an avid deer hunter and turkey hunter, and also had a passion for bass fishing. He cherished time spent with family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of thousands of students, quartet fans, and co-workers whose lives were enhanced by his presence. He was revered for his tremendous singing ability and musical talent, and also for his integrity, his honesty, his gentle spirit, and in the way in lived his life. Flener was a member of Aberdeen Baptist Church where he served as deacon and music director. When asked in his last days what his greatest accomplishment was, other than his family, he said, “My salvation, no greater accomplishment.” Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 7, 2016, at Aberdeen Baptist Church in Morgantown, with burial in Aberdeen Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2016, and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Aberdeen Baptist Church. Survivors include his beloved wife and sweetheart of 31 years, Kimberly Scott Flener; one son, Joshua Scott Hampton and his wife, Jennifer, of Morgantown, and one daughter, Amanda Lane Flener of Morgantown; two granddaughters, Laney Bell Hampton, of Morgantown and Sophia Lane Johnson, of Morgantown; his parents, Dale and Linda Coots Flener; one brother, Scott Flener, and his wife, Kara, of Morgantown; one sister-in-law, Angela Scott Keathley and husband Bryan, of Union City, TN; one brother-in-law, Jason Keith Scott, and wife Carissa, of Brandenburg, KY; several nieces and nephews: Katherine Flener and Delaina Flener of Morgantown, Andrew Keathley and Matthew Keathley of Memphis, TN, and Ameia Scott, Cade Scott, and Canon Scott, of Brandenburg; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
