Van George Tomes, 71, of Shepherdsville went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2019 surrounded by his family.
Van was born October 14, 1947 in Louisville, KY. He graduated from Manual High School and Western Kentucky University. He was retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education where he taught at Manual High School and Fairdale High School. He was also retired from the Floyd County, Indiana Board of Education where he taught at Floyd Central High School. Van was saved in June 1957 at Lone Hill United Baptist Church where he was a member at his death. He was ordained into the United Baptist Ministry and serving as Pastor at Lone Hill, Basil Chapel, Caney Creek, Claggett and Greenwood Road. He served as Assistant Pastor at 1st United Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents,Cassie and Bill Tomes; mother and father-in-law; Geneva and Reverend Alva Casey. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Gayle Tomes; daughters, Vanessa Poteet (Kevin), Pamela Uselton (Chad) and Trish Priest (Bob); sisters, Susan Tomes and Diane Garner (Jack); grandchildren, Brandon Romine (Ashley), Tyler Poteet (Haleigh), Brianne Priest, Alyssa Brewer (Wayne) and Ryan Priest; great grandchildren, Jax and Khori. His funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Lone Hill United Baptist Church with burial to follow in Lone Hill United Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Schmid Funeral Home in Mt. Washington and after 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church until service time. Comments are closed.
