Jack Johnson, age 93, of Mt. Washington, peacefully departed this life on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well lived. Born in Edmonson County on November 3, 1932, he was the son of the late Estil Alonzo and Fern Blanton Johnson. For many years, he shared a devoted marriage with the love of his life, Shelby Jean Douglas Johnson, until her passing on December 1, 1987. Though he deeply missed her, the love they built together remained in his heart throughout the rest of his days.

Jack proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, carrying with him a strong sense of duty, honor and resilience throughout his life. Raised with a remarkable work ethic, he began working at just thirteen years old and never slowed down. He dedicated twenty-five years as a machinist at Brown Williamson and later worked more than twenty years at Cissell Manufacturing. Work was never simply a job to Jack — it was a reflection of the pride he took in providing for his family and the satisfaction he found in staying busy. In truth, if his health had allowed it, he would have continued working up until the end.

Jack was known for his independence, determination and unmistakable grit. He had a quick wit, a sharp sense of humor and a way of bringing life to every conversation. He loved to tinker, repair and figure things out with his own hands, rarely meeting a problem he would not try to fix. Whether it was a stereo, a broken appliance or something others had long given up on, Jack enjoyed the challenge of making it work again. He valued hard work, self-reliance and taking care of the people he loved. His strength, wisdom and hardworking spirit leave behind a legacy that will continue to live on in those who knew him best. Jack was a member of Poplar Spring United Baptist Church and held close the values of faith, family and perseverance throughout his life.

He leaves to honor his memory— his son, Gary Johnson (Teri) of Bardstown, KY; his grandsons, Thomas “Jack” Johnson and Dylan Wayne Johnson; his sister, Jan Sharp of Sarasota, FL; sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy Johnson, Wanda Douglas, Carolyn Thiessen, Teresa Douglas, Sandy Johnson and Mac Douglas; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who will forever hold him close in their hearts. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, John Henry Johnson, June Basham, Ray Johnson, Carl Johnson, Carlos Johnson and Louella Johnson.

The interment will be in Sweeden Church Cemetery, where graveside military honors will be conducted by the Nesbit Alexander VFW Post #6937, in grateful recognition of Jack’s faithful service to his country. Memorial contributions may be made to: Sweeden Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Edd Williams.
