Janice Woosley Young, 81, of Crawfordsville, IN passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023. Janice was born August 16, 1942 in Big Reedy, KY to the late Alton Burks and Edna Mae Tomes Woosley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Gene Young; two brothers, Sheridan and Alben Woosley; sister Joyce Harrison, brother-in-law, Jack Harrison, and sister-in-law Myra Woosley.
Janice is survived by her children, Jay (Sherry) Young of Waynetown, IN and Erin Young of Indianapolis, IN; and grandchildren, Makhalea (Chris) and Shane Young; one brother, Terrell Woosley (Mary Ann); sister-in-law Lillie Woosley, and several nieces and nephews. Janice was a graduate of Western Kentucky University, where she met Ray. Ray and Janice were married on June 13, 1964, a week after graduating from WKU, with Janice wearing the wedding gown she had sewn herself on “Mamaw” Woosley’s old treadle sewing machine. They settled in New Albany and Greenville, IN before moving to Crawfordsville, IN upon retirement to be able to enjoy being wonderful grandparents to Shane and Makhalea. Janice was a lifelong librarian working at Hazelwood Jr High School in New Albany, as well as Iroquois Public Library in Louisville, KY. Janice had many talents and interests. She loved to sew, quilt, do puzzles, crossword puzzles and play scrabble (especially with cousin Julia Ann). She also was an avid tennis fan, which she passed on to daughter Erin, and they enjoyed going to the annual tennis tournament in Cincinnati for many years together. One of her greatest joys was to travel; she had a deep love of the ocean, and she and Ray shared many trips from Florida to Maine to Nova Scotia where they enjoyed seeing as many lighthouses as they could. Their final big trip with dear friends was also their first flight; to London, England. They toured England and Scotland. Which leads to one of Janice’s other great loves, she enjoyed all things British and learning about the English royalty, including the Crown Jewels which she got to see in person. She also enjoyed many trips out “West” with her brother Alben. But beyond all of these, she loved her family the very most. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery. She was married to her devoted husband and best friend of sixty-one years, Robert “Bob” McDaniel, who also preceded her in death.
Nadene and her husband owned and operated Miss Green River Boat Concessions at Mammoth Cave National Park for over twenty-eight years. She was a faithful member of Cave City Baptist Church, until her health began to fail. She leaves to honor her memory— nieces, Pat Hatler and Debbie Pownall; nephews, Paul Waldrop, Shawn Waldrop, Michael Dawes and Joey Dawes; several great nieces and nephews and brother-in-law, Walter “Moe” Calderone. She was proceeded in death by three sisters, Laura Brauner, Mary Ellen Webster, an infant girl; and two brothers, Richard Clark and Steven Geary. The Edmonson County native was a 1967 graduate of ECHS, a retired CNA/CMA for The Medical Center @ Bowling Green and Greenview Hospital and a member of First Love General Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Clifford Torrence and Goldie Clark Torrence. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Torrence, Clifford Torrence Jr. and Ronnie Torrence; a sister, Sandra Faye Meredith; three grandchildren, Gerald Wayne Vincent, Brandon Kyle Grider and Krista Lynn Vincent; two great granddaughters, Kyleigh Westray and Grace Lynn; a son-in-law Lee Crowder; and a sister-in-law, Connie Vincent. Frankie Toms, age 89 of Park City, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023 at The Medical Center at Caverna. Frankie was born in Hart County to the late Ted and Annie Mae Toms on August 10, 1934. At 29 years of age, he was saved while at his workplace in July 1963 and joined Cedar Hill United Baptist Church in August 1964. Frankie served there as a trustee and ordained deacon and also served as church clerk for many years.
Following his retirement from Holley Carburetor after 38 years of employment, he spent many mornings golfing with his friends. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Army at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and Fort Eustis in Virginia. He leaves to honor his memory, his wife of 68 years, Olive R. Lloyd was born on August 4, 1948 in Mesa, AZ. He was the youngest of 4 and always known as the prankster. He moved to Kentucky as a young child and completed his grade school in Edmonson County, Kentucky and college education in Bowling Green, KY. His working career would be spent in Bowling Green until his retirement in 2007. In his early career, he was a firefighter and later spent most of his working years as a Quality Engineer for Corvette/General Motors. He also was known best as an entrepreneur, starting multiple small businesses over the years. As a young man, he also proudly and honorably served in the military (Navy) where he received the National Defense Service Medal. Some of Lloyd’s hobbies later in life included enjoying good food, traveling, cars and car shows, technology and gadgets, and keeping up the prankster reputation. While in The Villages during retirement, he worked part-time with The Villages Community Watch and with the Atomic Golf Cart Company, along with participating in several clubs that included The Kentucky Club, The Villages Pine Hills Club, and The Atomic Golf Cart Club. A Celebration of Life for Lloyd will be held on Wednesday, January 3rd from 2:00 - 4:00 PM, at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Society, 3990 E. SR 44, Ste. 105, Wildwood, FL 34785. Mr. Basham was a farmer and a truck driver for over 40 years and belonged to the Local 89 Teamsters Union. He was a Free Mason, and a 65-year member of Elijah Upton Masonic Lodge 828, A and FM. Marion was an avid train enthusiast. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Frances Geraldine Vanzant Basham; one daughter, Sharon L. Logsdon (Jim); one son, Gary N. His greatest passion was spending time with his children, that he adored. He was preceded in death by six siblings, Betty Humphrey, Pat Tarrence, Don Vincent, Judy Childress, Marilyn Vincent and Janet Vincent. Alice Mae Madison, age 83 of Macon, GA, peacefully departed this life with her family by her side on Thursday, October 12, 2023. The Edmonson County, KY native was born on July 20, 1940 to the late Guy Lindle and Edith Webb. She was married to her best friend and husband of sixty-one years, Gerald A. Madison, until they were parted by his death on July 11, 2017.
Alice Mae and Gerald moved their young family to Georgia in 1979 to continue his career with Brown & Williamson. While Gerald progressed in his career, Alice Mae worked as a housewife and mother, and lovingly cared for her family. She was the true definition of a virtuous woman and help mate. Alice Mae, Gerald and other family members were charter members of Barfield United Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. They dearly loved their family, but above all, they loved the Lord. The Larue County native was born on June 18, 1946 to the late Ruel and Catherine Druien Allen. He was married to his best friend and soul mate of forty-eight years, Carla Whitaker Allen, who survives.
Charles was a U.S. Army veteran, and served during the Vietnam War era. He was a former educator with the Hart County School District, and was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Charles loved his community and served for many years as a Barren County Magistrate. He was also a member of Cave City Chamber of Commerce, Park City Lions Club and Cave City Bear Wallow Lodge #231 F&AM. He enjoyed farming and raising his cattle, tobacco and strawberries. Besides his wife, Carla, he leaves to honor his memory— his children, Benjamin Druien Allen (Jennifer) of Lexington, Madie Allen Doyle (Jason) of Cave City and Laura Lee Allen Kazee (Chris) of Worthville; grandchildren, William Whitaker Allen, Henry Druien Allen, Matthew Bradley Doyle, Abbey Catherine Doyle, Addison Christin Kazee and Carter Morris Kazee; siblings, Gus Allen (Rita), Margaret Whitlock (Asa) and Larry Allen (Sharon), along with several nieces and nephews. She was married to her loving husband of seventy-three years, Donald Skaggs, until they were parted by his death on January 8, 2016.
Dorothy worked at Rike’s Department Store, along with her sister, Effie, during World War II. She spent the rest of her life being a devoted housewife, supporter of her husband and caring for their two children, Donald and Jeffrey. Her favorite pastime was playing the piano. She was a devoted servant of her Lord Jesus and a longtime member at Fairborn First Baptist Church. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her. Born Nov. 28, 1943 in Bowling Green, she was a retired Bremner Biscuit Co. employee and a member of Silent Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Oscar England and Lilly Butt England and the wife of the late Travis Wendell Sego. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Sparks; five brothers; and two sisters. Basil Anne Hurt Maxwell Darden, 81, of Brownsville passed away Sept. 23, 2023 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.
The Todd County native was a retired 4th Grade teacher at Brownsville Elementary School, a member of Shady Land Church of Christ, a member of Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Red Hat Society. She was the daughter of the late Dartis Hurt and Irene Wells Hurt and the wife of the late Mack Maxwell and Larry Darden, who survives. She was preceded in death by a son, Chad Maxwell. Larry Dewayne Deweese, age 80 of Cecilia KY departed this life on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Baptist Health Hospital in Elizabethtown. Larry was born on February 23, 1943 to the late Cleo and Pauline Deweese. He was married sixty-one years to Bertie Johnson Deweese, who survives.
Larry grew up in a loving, Christian home, and was saved at the age of twelve at Midway United Missionary Baptist Church. Larry joined Hardin County First United Baptist Church in 1975, where he remained a member until his passing. He worked hard for his family at General Electric in Louisville KY, until his retirement in 1997, after thirty-two years of service. Besides his wife, he leaves to honor his memory— his children, Sharon Deweese and Barry (Rebecca) Deweese of Cecilia; brother, Shannon Deweese (Faye) of Cecilia; two grandsons, his pride and joy, Alex and Benjamin Deweese. Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Lynn Deweese. Interment will be in Sweeden Church Cemetery.
