William Ross "Bill" Halliday, M.D., born on the 9th of May, 1926, in Atlanta, Georgia, peacefully departed this life on September 24, 2024, in Shoreline, Washington. His remarkable journey through life was marked by a dedicated commitment to medicine, the exploration of subterranean wonders, and an impact on many through his work and writings.

Bill Halliday was a man of many talents and a visionary in medicine and speleology. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from Swarthmore College in 1946, he graduated from George Washington Medical School in 1948, where he was honored to be a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. Following his medical training, he served with pride as an officer in the United States Navy, fulfilling active and reserve roles until his honorable discharge in 1957.

His professional career was both varied and distinguished. From 1957 to 1965, he practiced as a thoracic surgeon in Seattle, Washington, where he laid the groundwork for his later roles. He then took on significant responsibilities, including serving as Medical Consultant and later Chief Medical Consultant and Medical Director of the Department of Labor and Industries from 1971 to 1976. A prolific figure in vocational rehabilitation, Dr. Halliday held the position of Medical Director for the Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation from 1976 to 1982 and contributed to the N.W. Vocational Rehabilitation Group in 1984. His expertise extended to multiple roles, including Staff Physician at the N.W. Occupational Health Center, enriching the lives of countless individuals seeking better health outcomes.

In addition to his medical endeavors, Bill was deeply passionate about speleology and the majesty of the earth's geological formations. He held the esteemed position of Director of the Western Speleological Survey from 1955 to 1981. He continued his involvement with the National Speleological Society as a Board of Governors member intermittently until 2001. His leadership in the Hawaii Speleological Survey and his role as the Chairman of the International Union of Speleology Commission on Volcanic Caves further demonstrate his commitment to exploring and preserving the natural wonders of our planet. Bill authored several notable publications including "Adventure Is Underground" and "American Caves and Caving", enhancing public knowledge and appreciation for the fascinating world of caves.

Bill is survived by his children, Marcia Gojan of Sequim, WA, Patricia Halliday of Edmonds, WA, and William Ross Halliday III of Yakima, WA; his grandchildren, Michael Ross Halliday and Timothy George Halliday; stepchildren, Michael Kinnard (Kathy) of Chadds Ford, PA; Steven Kinnard (Judy) of Beaufort, SC; Jason Kinnard (Pam) of Mt. Juliet, TN; and David Kinnard (Sharon) of Nashville, TN, along with numerous, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jane Wakefield Halliday; his father, William Ross Halliday; and his two beloved wives: Eleanore Lou Halliday, with whom he shared a marriage from 1951 until her passing in 1983, and Louise (Sis) Baird Halliday, from May 7, 1988, until her death on January 2, 2018.

William Ross "Bill" Halliday, M.D., leaves behind not merely a legacy etched in the annals of medicine and speleology but also the indelible mark of a kind and gentle spirit whose contributions will be remembered and celebrated by all those whose lives were touched by his generosity, knowledge, and compassion.
