Dear Editor,
I received my electric bill the other day and surprisingly I am not griping about it, but I just want to know if someone can tell me why there is school tax on it when I already pay them on my property taxes? Don’t understand!

Here is a link to the state website with information regarding the Utility Gross Receipts License Tax: https://revenue.ky.gov/Business/Utility-Gross-Receipts-License-Tax/Pages/default.aspx

Thanks for the info but that still doesn’t explain where the money is going. I hear it goes to Warren County schools.

Mr. Brooks, thank you for your question. The Utility Gross Receipts License Tax is levied by the school district board of education and is paid to the school district where it is collected (through the state Dept of Revenue). If you paid it in Edmonson County, it is returned to the Edmonson County school district. As far as where it is to be spent within the district, it's my understanding that the funds go into the district's general fund without specific requirements. (KRS 160.6152)

Thank You for the response. I still have a question though. WRECC is based in warren county and the tax is collected in Warren County ( that’s where the bill gets paid). How do I find out if it goes to Warren or Edmonson county?

It is actually based on the service address for the bill. If the service is provided to an address is in the Edmonson County school district , then the taxes would be returned to that district, according to the Kentucky Revised Statutes. That is a general answer for how the tax works, but if you would like to ask about your specific account, we'd certainly be happy to discuss further. Please feel free to contact WRECC at 270-842-6541 for more detailed information. Additionally, if you have additional interest in how the taxes are collected and returned, I am sure the Kentucky Department of Revenue would be happy to further explain their process as well. Thank you again for your question. We appreciate your membership!

Again I am suggesting that you contact your Edmonson County WRECC board member to clarify this revenue question. Electric bills for the December-January timeframe have recently been concerningly higher than usual. Members have the right to know why...and why there are other add-ons that contribute to higher electric bills such as usage, number of days for billing, etc. Ms Phelps has also given the number for WRECC office in BG. There are 800#s and local numbers in the phone book, WRECC website and staff that can explain this simply. I could tell you but not my job anymore

I have spoken to our representative and it was explained to me in detail and the answer was satisfactory to all my questions. I appreciate all the info from everyone. It was a really nice conversation.

I guess my biggest disappointment in all of this is that the recipients of this tax money didn’t offer up any information at all on the subject. I assume they know more about this than anyone and expected some input from them.

I agree that We The People have the right to know, and we need to know where our money is going. I think we should all be more involved the operations and workings of our government.

Thank You All
