You ever have one of those weeks where you look at where you were four years ago and think, “What happened?” If so… R.G. ME It’s April of 2012. Robert Lee Griffin III just won the Heisman for his excellent final year at Baylor University and the Washington Redskins just gave four high draft picks and Daniel Snyder’s first, second and fifth born children to snag him in the draft. Fast forward to September 9th, 2012 and RGIII becomes the first starting quarterback in the NFL to be born in the 1990’s and, by the end of the season was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by having a then rookie record 102.4 QB rating and a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio and led his Redskins to its first playoff appearance since 2007. And then he messes up his ACL and MCL and when healthy says he is going to change his playing style to be more of a pocket passer and less of a runner. Over the next two seasons, The Redskins would win five games out of the 20 that RG III started as well as fired a Hall of Fame coach in Mike Shanahan and has been demoted to third string QB. The kicker? RG III (or RG ME) has a clause in his contract that if he gets injured, he gets $16 million in the bank. But, ya know, at least he has that rookie season…and Snyder still has no SuperBowl wins. FROM BEARS TO THE SWAMP So, I walk in Wildcat stadium just as the National Anthem is being played with a 37 lb little girl on my hip who, for some strange reason doesn’t want to walk around the track, and it seems that before I can get me a drink and her a hot dog, Edmonson County scores a touchdown in like a half a second. By the time she is getting tired the score is Wildcats 14 Butler County 12 and I decide to leave. Little to my surprise when I check EdmonsonVoice.com, the Cats somehow let the Bears score a slew of touchdowns and we lose. Time for a short memory. This week is important. This week is the Tobacco Stick game. This is the week that we spit in the wind and win a game! Grayson has a good team, but the thing I learned is the best motivation during my playing days is a big loss. I think that as long as The Cats go back to the basic fundamentals that got them the big win against Caverna, they can beat the Swampies and get that stick. Edmonson 31-14. THE BILLBOARD DUDE For those of you who are stopped on the north side of Green River because of progress, if you look up you see a dude on the billboard holding a trophy, wearing red and the words “Most Exciting Offense in 2015.” This is referring to Jeff Brohm’s Hilltopper squad who came in last year, surprised the Conference USA (remember when they had Louisville?), won nine games and beat Central Michigan in the Bahamas Bowl. This year, The Tops start the season against Vandy at Vandy which will be played Thursday on the SEC Network. Look for some high powered offense and another bowl game this year. As for college football picks… BITS AND PIECES There are a bazillion college football games to watch this weekend, but only a handful that could mean something come December (because a lot of the power conference schools use the first week as a trial run. I think Ohio State is going to have sixteen players starting at quarterback…maybe). Obviously there are a few on Saturday that mean something to this states fans. The Louisville Cards go to #6 Auburn to play (CBS, 2:30 CST). Sorry Cards fans. Auburn 35-21. UK hosts UL-L on ESPNU at 6pm. Cats 34-10. Other important games: Alabama over Wisconsin. Ohio State over Virginia Tech (that is on Labor Day). #11 Notre Dame over Texas. Stanford over Northwestern. That’s all for this week. Next week, look for the NFL preview early in the week and another Voice on Sports later, with picks on NCAA Football and week one in the NFL. Until then, you can follow me on Twitter at @voiceonsports and remember…underwater basket weaving is still not a sport.

Darren Doyle, story and photos The Lady Cat volleyball team won 2-1 over Breckinridge County last night at ECHS improving to a 8-3 record on the season. Sophomore Megan Dockery was asked to start in the absence of Senior Captain MaryChris Waddell, who was out with an illness. Dockery contributed nicely as the Lady Cats had control over the first set from the beginning, maintaining a lead throughout, and won, 25-19. ECHS struggled a bit at the first of the second set, falling behind 7-2 and causing Coach Brad Sullivan to call timeout. EC was able to score three straight points but Breckinridge was able to push back and hold the lead at 16-9. It was then that the Lady Cats went on an impressive run of seven straight to tie the set at 16 all. The score remained close but the Lady Tigers were able to hold on to win the set 25-20 and tie the game at 1-1. The third set was a fun and entertaining set to watch as fans saw 14 ties and 12 different lead changes. Neither team ever held more than a two point lead during the entire match. Breckinridge took their first lead at 11-10 but quickly lost it as the Lady Cats scored the next three. The Lady Tigers came back and tied it again at 13 all, and from there the score was either tied or a one point differential when EC called a timeout behind 1, 24-23.
It remained a seesaw until the Lady Cats were able to score two in a row from a 25-25 tie as they finally won the set 27-25, and the game 2-1. The Lady Cats are currently ranked #4 in the third region with a 5-2 regional record and hold a 2-1 record in the district. The girls will host Warren Central at home Thursday night for a F/JV/Varsity game with JV starting at 5:30pm. by Robert Vincent
It’s almost Fall. The leaves change. The temperature drops. But that is not what really matters. You hear the fight songs. There are chants like “Go Big Blue!” or “War Eagle” or “Roll Tide!” Sandwiched in between the wonders of high school football and the grandeur of the NFL is College Football. First, we will take a peek at the AP Top 25, in a nutshell. Ohio State is still #1 after not losing much while holding the championship following the first ever college football playoff. After them, almost a third of the top 25 is owned by SEC schools, including Alabama at 3, Auburn at 6 and Georgia at 9. TCU is ranked 2 (Horned. Frogs.), Baylor and Michigan State round out the rest of the top 5. So…onward: THE GOOD
THE BAD
THE UGLY TRUTH It really just comes down to the New Years’ Six Bowls (two of which is semi-final playoff games) and the road to the Championship. I see Auburn, Ohio State, Baylor and TCU being in the playoff mix…and we will get to that in a bit. The other four New Years’ Six I think will be: Peach Bowl: Georgia vs Florida State Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs Oklahoma Rose Bowl: Oregon vs Michigan State And Fiesta: Clemson vs. USC And the playoffs… #1 Auburn over #4 TCU #2 Ohio State over #3 Baylor And the championship… Auburn takes the championship from Ohio State. War Eagle soars over the Buckeyes. Later this week, I will bring you your regularly scheduled Voice on Sports, but look for another two-fer next week because as everyone knows…once the college season starts the NFL is not far behind. I feel another The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Truth coming along. Hope you enjoy and remember…ping pong is still not a sport…. |
