Edmonson Voice Sports: Alyssa Doyle, photos: It was a good night for both softball and baseball for Edmonson County High School, as the Lady Cats blanked Grayson County 5-0 while the Wildcats disposed of the Trinity Raiders 11-1 in six innings last night at the District 12 girls' and boys' tournaments, respectively. The Lady Cats took on the Lady Cougars in Leitchfield, with Grayson County hosting the girls' tournament. Edmonson County took advantage of the early pitching struggles of 8th grader Ellie Bratcher of the Lady Cougars, after Lady Cat lead off hitter Jolee Vincent was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first. Consecutive singles by Kaylee Ann Sanders and Julie Norris loaded the bases and Bratcher walked Mikayla Hogg to bring in Edmonson's first run. Sanders would be tagged out at home attempting to score on Autumn Simmons' fielder's choice, but with the bases still loaded, Addie Childress earned two RBIs on a single to center for a 3-0 lead. After a strikeout and two outs, Emma Price blasted a double to left to score two more for a 5-0 lead. The Lady Cats would need no more offense as pitcher Julie Norris and the Edmonson defense took care of the rest, allowing no runs from Grayson County, which ended the Lady Cougars' season. Norris gave up no runs on 5 hits, struck out 7, and walked only two over 7 innings. The Lady Cats committed only one error in the contest. They advance to the district finals for the second consecutive season. Until last year, their last appearance in the finals was 2016 when they won the title over Grayson County. They will take on Butler County, (10-18, 3-4) the four seed, in the championship game tonight at 6PM at Grayson County. They are 1-1 against the Lady Bears this season. The Lady Cats improved to 13-14 on the season. Wildcats Dominate Trinity 11-1 in Six Innings The Wildcats continued their steady play against the struggling Raiders of Trinity High School in Whitesville. Trinity only managed to win three games this year and the Wildcats took advantage of their troubles last night.
Trinity got on the board first with a 1-0 lead after a hit batsman, single, and a sac bunt. The Raiders struggled for base runners for the rest of the contest as the Wildcats took care of business from the plate, mound, and defense. Edmonson County tied the score in the second inning after three walks and a sac fly. Michael Mills would score from third on a wild pitch, giving the Cats a 2-1 lead. Levi Meredith, who is hitting .488 on the season for the Cats, roped a triple to center, scoring two for a 4-1 lead. Meredith would score on another Raider wild pitch for a 5-1 lead. Meredith was 4-4 on the evening. The Cats would go on to win in undramatic fashion as Trinity walked in the final run for a run-ruled victory. Wilson pitched one-and-one-third innings, giving up one run on one hit. Carter Hodges gave up no hits on one-and-two thirds innings, and Levi Meredith finished them off, throwing three innings and allowing no hits. The Wildcats return to the district finals after missing the cut last year. They won back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2021. They are the top seed and will take on second-seeded Grayson County (15-14, 5-2) for the championship title. Edmonson County is now 22-8, which is their best record in over 20 years.
