Dear Mongoose,
My wife and I moved to this county about a year ago and we've visited several churches here. We've enjoyed some of the services but it's almost as if visitors aren't wanted in several of the small places. Do you know why this is? We've started attending church in Bowling Green and everyone is really nice. Dear Looking for the Lord in all the Wrong Places, We all know people who make friends everywhere they go and have never met a stranger. On the other hand, we also know people that you've never seen smile or even speak, but those that are friends with them can somehow paint a totally different picture of them to you. Churches are made up of people and people have personalities as the two described and everywhere in between. This would be part of the reason you may have not been so welcomed, due to the church taking on the personality of its members. I sincerely hope that was the reasoning and I am sad to say there are a couple other factors that can lead to this closed-mindedness. No doubt this will ruffle some feathers but that's what I'm here for, I reckon; "as long as my people are ok and taken care of, I don't care about anyone else and really don't want to fool with them." No... this isn't a word-for-word quote that I've heard, but it definitely captures the attitude of some 'round here. I understand Christians are to separate themselves from the world but when the world comes to you for help-- who else is supposed to help? I'm sorry you had some bad experiences but keep in mind, those friends that never say much, when you get to know them, oftentimes become your most loyal friends. -MG
