Joey “Bird” James, age 55 of Brownsville, departed this life at his residence on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The Edmonson County native was born on September 27, 1968, to Deloras “Dee” Vincent Wilson and the late Billy Joe James.
Joey was a 1987 graduate of Edmonson County High School and was a great athlete for the Wildcats. He was a sports fanatic and most especially loved University of Kentucky basketball. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing travel softball for Bertie’s and Bank of Edmonson County with all of his buddies and Anthony “Slug” Duvall. Joey worked for many years at Hill’s Pet Nutrition and was a member of Pleasant Union United Baptist Church. Besides his mother, Dee, he leaves to honor his memory— his daughters, Michelle Haycraft (Preston) of Bee Spring and Sarah Mooneyhan (Luke) of Morgantown; four grandchildren; his brother, Cliff Simmons of Brownsville; aunts and uncle, Jane James, Barbara Vincent, Rondal Vincent, Jan Campbell (Skip), Venetta Webb (Donald) and Shelia Meredith; nieces and nephew, Alex Lasley (Kevin), Sherry Reed and Chad Moore, along with several cousins, extended family members and friends, who he loved. Warren owned and operated North South Trucking for many years. During this time, he worked closely with numerous farmers across south central Kentucky. He worked most recently with his friends at Buttram Farms, who he considered part of his family. Warren loved traveling and farming. His business was his heart and soul. When he was younger, he was active with the FFA, and he later joined himself with the Barren County Cattleman’s Association. He was a member of Park City Baptist Church, and attended Hillvue Heights Church. He worked for Dunaway Timber for over fifteen years, and traveled many years across the eastern United States as a long haul truck driver. Wes never met a stranger. He loved people for who they were and wasn’t judgmental. He loved to laugh and joke, and had a great appreciation for art and all genres of music. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and loved his family, children and grandchildren above all. He very proudly wore the title of “Pops”! John enjoyed flying remote airplanes, creating stained glass items, gunsmithing and was an avid marksman. He was a loyal friend to many, and will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved him. She and her husband co-owned and operated Clarkson Super Saver grocery store in Grayson County for many years, and she later worked at Carhartt, embodying a strong work ethic and a spirit of service. She found joy in trying new recipes and cooking for her family, and her love for them was evident in every meal she prepared. Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A devoted mother, sister and grandmother, Christine will be cherished for the love and laughter she brought to her children and family.
Born on December 14, 1941 in the Kyrock community of Edmonson County, Christine was the beloved daughter of the late Herbert and Clella Poteet Harp. Her family finds comfort in knowing that she was saved as young girl in a tent revival. She later became a member of Midway United Missionary Baptist Church. While her earthly journey has come to an end, she is now embraced by the Lord, reunited with her parents, and rejoicing in eternal life. She leaves to honor her memory— her children, Greg Lindsey (Donna) of Bowling Green, Donna Young (Kelvin) of Franklin and Brent Lindsey (Mildred) of Elizabethtown; eight grandchildren, Lindsay Edwards, Jeremy Lindsey, Derek Lindsey (Casey), Ashlee Williams (J.D.), Kristopher Coles (Brittany), Colby Lindsey, Alex Lindsey and Kaitlin Lindsey; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Carlene Probus of Louisville and Joyce Vincent of Brownsville; special friends, Mike and Leah Booker and family, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Trulie Lashley, Carlos and Truman “Bud” Harp. Interment will be in Bee Spring Church Cemetery. The Fostoria, Ohio native was born on February 16, 1961 to the late Ed and Donna Miller Dockery. He was married to his loving wife and best friend, Sherri Moore Dockery, who survives.
Gary worked for many years as an electrician. He loved playing music, and working with trialing border collies. His greatest pleasure was making memories with his family. Besides his wife, Sherri, he leaves to honor his memory— his children, Eric Dockery and Joel Dockery, both of Kokomo, IN, Kevin Payne (Shannon) of Alvaton and Brittany Kitchens (K.J.) of Brownsville; step-children, Niccole Jones (Andy) of Pathfork and Jacob Daniels (Jill) of Morgantown; grandchildren, Erica Payne, Raylan Kitchens, Kaylee Jones, Jaxon Daniels and Gracie Alexander; sister, Lenore Shoemaker; special niece, Kiya Moore, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Davenport Young Monroe, age 84, passed away peacefully very early on Sunday morning, August 18, 2024 at her home. She was surrounded by loving family. Betty was born in Wallins Creek, Harlan County, KY on September 22, 1939, to Charles Virgil and Mary Belle (Davis) Davenport. Betty grew up in Southern Indiana and was a 1957 graduate of the old Jeffersonville High School. She lived and worked in Louisville, KY for 3 years prior to her marriage to her high school sweetheart, Monte Eugene Young on July 16, 1960. They were happily married for 37 years before his passing on November 1, 1997. They were the loving parents of 4 children whom they leave behind including Greg Young, Chris Young, Julie Hendrix and Amy Guidry (David). She also leaves behind a cherished sister who was also her best friend, Shirley (aka “Cookie”), her youngest brother Curtis Davenport and her dear sister-in-law Pat Norman. Betty was a free-lance secretary until 1980 when she was hired by the Main Branch of the Louisville Post Office on Gardiner Lane. During the 8 years she was employed there, she served as program manager for the local Toastmasters Club, secretary of the Upward Mobility Program for Women and also acted as editor of the Louisville District Employee Newsletter, for which she received a national award. She also was a Red Cross Volunteer with training for the Disaster Relief Chapter of Louisville, KY. She was also a member of Graceland Baptist Church and the family wishes to give special thanks to John Pearce and Bill Hinton. Their visits and prayers were such a comfort to her. In 1988 Betty moved with her husband, Monte and youngest daughter, Amy, to Mammoth Cave (Nolin Lake), KY where Betty was appointed postmaster of Wax, KY. She also served as postmaster replacement at Canmer, KY; Summit, KY; Lindseyville, KY; and Park City, KY until she was appointed as permanent postmaster at Clarkson, KY in 1993 until 1997. She talked often about her time at Clarkson and how much she loved and missed all of the people there. She retired early, in 1997, to care for her husband, Monte, until he passed from a long battle with cancer later that year. In 2001, she was remarried to Frank Monroe of New Albany, IN until his death on July 4, 2022. During her lifetime, Betty enjoyed square dancing (where she met Monte through their mutual friend Dale Wesley), Folk Dancing, Ballroom Dancing, Roller Skating, Bowling on a league, Playing in Euchre tournaments at her late brother, Bobby’s house and she LOVED board games. She was a wicked opponent at Scrabble due to her lifetime history of being a voracious reader. Everyone knows she loved her books and loved to share her love of books by giving them away to family and friends whom she knew would love them as she did. Her favorite room in her home was her “library” with multiple bookcases filled to the brim with her beloved books. Betty’s greatest joy in life besides books, was her family, whom she loved so very much. In addition to Betty and Monte’s 4 children, she leaves 11 grandchildren including Jessica Smith (Justin), Christopher (Topher) Young, Chelsea (“Pickle”) Young, Emily Young, Carla Marlin, (Alex), Lori Landgrebe, Andrew Logsdon (Kelly), Jacob Samples, Alana Guidry, Abbey Guidry, and Addison Guidry and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest brother Bobby Davenport, 2 grandsons, David Young (Greg) and Jared Samples (Julie), and her brother-in-law, Stan Applegate (Shirley). She also wanted to acknowledge her former Daughter-in- Laws Glenda Young (Chris) and Corine Landgrebe (Greg) and former son-in-law Steve Samples (Julie) who remain a cherished part of our family. The family would also like to give a special acknowledgement to St. Croix Hospice Care and specifically to her nurses Cindy Willis and Toni Jones who were not only excellent nurses, but also became cherished friends, TC her chaplain and Elizabeth her social worker who were always so very kind, patient and caring. The Omaha, Nebraska native was born on August 16, 1945 to the late Joseph Daniel and Dorothy Benson Siderewicz. She was married to her best friend and soulmate of fifty-five years, Dallas S. Decker, until his passing on August 28, 2022.
Mary was of the Catholic faith, and attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Bowling Green. Through the years, Mary worked at the Plant Place, Dr. Bhatt’s office, and in the after school program at South Edmonson Elementary. She played bunco with a group of ladies, and in later years enjoyed the fellowship of her sewing group. Mary and Dallas’ home was always open to their friends and neighbors. For many years, while their boys were growing up, their back yard was the gathering place for all the neighborhood kids. She leaves to honor her memory— her sons, Mark Decker of Hendersonville, TN and John Decker (Tammy) of Bethpage, TN; grandchildren, Lauren, Evan, Carson, Amelia and Wyatt Decker, along with several nephews, nieces and cousins who will greatly miss her. Besides her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, Michael and Gloria Siderewicz. The Bowling Green native was born on December 2, 1967 to the late Martha Burress Madison. He was married to Sheila Simmons Madison, who survives. Chris was of the Baptist faith. He worked as a tow motor operator for KOBE Aluminum, and enjoyed woodworking, being outdoors, reading and writing. Besides his wife, Sheila, he leaves to honor his memory— his children, Ethan Madison (fiancée Hannah Helm) of Eastview and Elle Madison (Kacey Harvey) of Bowling Green; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Grayson and Myles Harvey; step-children, Cassie Carpenter, Chelsea Childress (Daniel) and Cameron Slaughter, and five step-grandchildren. Besides his mother, he was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Herman and Elizabeth Madison, Noah and Pauline Burress. The Jefferson County native was a retired butcher for Publix Super Markets, was owner and operator of Edmonson County Custom Kill from 1975-1985, was a former Brownsville City Councilman and was a member of Parkland Masonic Lodge in Louisville. He was the son of the late Charles Ben Barth and Ruby Freudenberger Barth and the husband of the late Phyllis Jean Heath Barth. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at New Home General Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place 11:00 AM-7:00 PM Monday and Tuesday and 11:00 AM-12:30 PM Wednesday at Gravil Funeral Home. Caroline “Carol” Cardwell Eilers, 82, of McDonough, GA passed away Aug. 13, 2024 at Edmonson Center.
The Edmonson County native was born in the then-booming community of Kyrock on June 10, 1942. She was a daughter of the late Julius and Lonis Basham Cardwell and the wife of the late George “Pop” Eilers. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Neal Cardwell and Charles “Jimmy” Cardwell and a sister, Madge Raymer. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM (EDT) Friday at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville. No other services are scheduled. Gravil Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Surviving are two daughters, Vanessa Norton (James) of McDonough and Sandra K. Carroll of Louisville; two sisters, Peggy Johnson of Sweeden and Regina Billings of Murfreesboro, TN; three grandchildren, Jacob Norton (Jordan), Tiffany Wilson (Brad) and Gabe Moore (Jason); five great grandchildren, Beau Norton, Emi Wilson, Brooke Wilson, Zachary Moore and Sawyer Moore; and several nieces and nephews. |
