Brenda Kay Glass, age 76 of Glasgow, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. The Barren County native was born on August 8, 1947 to the late Robert Lee and Willie Myrtle Bunch. She was married to her devoted husband of forty–seven years, Kenneth Wayne Glass, who survives.
Brenda was of the Baptist faith, and worked for years taking care of the elderly. She had a beautiful voice and such a talent to play the piano and sing. Brenda and Kenneth thoroughly enjoyed taking a stroll down the back country roads on their motorcycle with the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Besides her husband, Kenneth, she leaves to honor her memory— her daughter, Tina Morgan Burton (David) of Cave City; a grandson, Quentin Lee Burton of Cave City; a brother, Roger Lee Bunch (Norma) of Glasgow; four nieces and several great nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Thelma Bunch. Interment will be in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. The Edmonson County native was a 1979 graduate of Edmonson County High School, a construction worker- working mostly as a carpenter and bridge builder, was a proud U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Fairview United Baptist Church. He was a son of Bobby Carnes and Judy Saling Carnes of Bee Spring, who survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Joe Carnes. She was a daughter of the late Marvin Thomas Jaggers and Sylvia Poteet Jaggers. Kathy Helen Mercer, age 66, passed away in Bowling Green, Kentucky on August 14, 2023. She was born in Louisville Kentucky to Merial Jaggers and Bethel (Poteet) Jaggers in December of 1956. She is preceded in death by her father Merial Jaggers.
Kathy was blessing in every way. She was a wonderful mother, and she loved her grandbabies. She was crazy about her husband Of 42 years and loved all of her family dearly. She liked to paint and she loved to go fishing. She was always there to listen and lend a helping hand. Survivors include her husband Lennis Mercer and their children; Jamie Mercer (Kevin Whitaker), and Kevin Mercer. Her mother Bethel Jaggers, three grandchildren; William Shields, Haley Shields, and Charli Mercer as well as one great grandson, Karson Johnson. While living in Detroit, Martha worked many years as a bank teller for Comerica. She was of the Christian faith and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother and gram to her grandchildren. Judy was born in Edmonson County on May 21, 1946 to Robert and Violet Cannon. She received salvation at the age of 13 at a little Baptist church near Shepherdsville, KY. She was married to H. G. Hawks for 57 years. Judy was a stay-at-home mom for much of her life and was a very private person. She loved her family and spent almost all of her time caring for them. Judy was very dedicated to her husband and enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. G. Hawks and her parents, Robert Cannon and Violet Elmore Cannon. Eddie retired from the National Park Service after dedicating thirty-four years of service. During that time, he served over twenty-years as a law enforcement ranger, and over a decade as a volunteer coordinator for the Science and Resource Management Division at Mammoth Cave National Park. He was a member of Hillvue Heights Church, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, as well as an alumnus of Pi Kappa Alpha at Western Kentucky University. Eddie was a recipient of the distinguished Harry Yount National Park Ranger Award. He was a music enthusiast, amazing cook, an avid reader, and competitively watched Jeopardy every afternoon from the comforts of his recliner. He loved the Lord, was a devoted Christian and enjoyed studying the Bible. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of being PopPop to his grandbabies, who he adored. Merthel worked with her hands as a homemaker to care for the needs of her family. She was a faithful member of Beaver Dam Chapel United Baptist Church, until her health began to fail. She was a spiritual role model for many young women in their church, and in the community. Besides her husband, Leon, she leaves to honor her memory— two sons and their wives, Grant and Stephanie Whittle and Gregory and Kelly Whittle, all of Brownsville, along with three grandchildren, Kaitlin Sisk and her husband Brandon, Trent Whittle and Chloe Whittle. The Edmonson County native was a seamstress, a homemaker and a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was a daughter of the late James Ebbon Hayes and Mary Ellen Duvall Hayes and the wife of the late Jimmy Jennings. She was preceded in death by nine siblings. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at St. John’s with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place 3-8 PM Sunday and 9:00-10:30 AM Monday at Gravil Funeral Home. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 PM Sunday. Surviving are two daughters, Penny Bond (James) of Bowling Green and Pamela Hughes (James) of Sunfish; two sons, Jeff Duvall and Greg Duvall both of Martinsville, VA; two sisters, Dorothy Fredrick of Sunfish and Susan Brown of Leitchfield; nine grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. James “Roger” Childress, 71, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023.
He was born on April 23, 1952 to Floyd Childress of Mammoth Cave, who survives and the late Christine Priddy Childress. He was raised in the Mammoth Cave area of Edmonson County. He graduated from Edmonson County High School in 1970 and moved to Louisville where he worked as a union member for the L&N and CSX Railroads for almost 40 years. He was a member of Union Light Missionary Baptist Church and loved canoeing, fishing, and more recently, working on his family farm and taking care of his father. He was preceded in death by a son, Keith Childress; and two brothers, Garry Childress & Glenn Childress. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 21st at Gravil Funeral Home in Brownsville, KY. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Childress of Mammoth Cave; a daughter, Natalee Frie (Colin Yoder) of Eau Claire, WI, his father, Floyd Childress, of Mammoth Cave; grandchildren Caroline and Carson Frie of Eau Claire; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Arlene Carder Minton, 63, of Smiths Grove passed away at 7:31 PM Sunday July 16, 2023 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville with her family by her side.
The Edmonson County native was a custodian at Edmonson County Middle School, a 1978 graduate of Edmonson County High School and a member of Asphalt Church of Christ. She was a daughter of the late Claude Sharpie Carder and Willie Mae Anderson Carder of Brownsville, who survives.
