Born in Toler, Ky on November 20, 1933, Rev. Robert E. Fields Jr. passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in Raleigh, N.C.
Bob was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and pastor. A lifelong organizer and Presbyterian, he led three devoted and faithful congregations to witness the saving grace of Christ our Lord and Savior: Saint Andrews Presbyterian in Pinch, WV, Montgomery Presbyterian in Montgomery, WV and Hudson Memorial Presbyterian in Raleigh, NC. He shared his gifts of thoughtful planning and patient optimism with several churches as interim pastor including Outer Banks Presbyterian and Mt. Bethel Presbyterian in Durham, NC. He valued and encouraged informed civic mindedness and positive participation in the democratic process. Bob was the first in his family to attend and graduate college and was a tireless promoter to his family of the value of education. A graduate of Centre College (A.B.) and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond (M.Div., D.Min.), Bob is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of sixty-five years, Charlene Whittle Fields, his three children, Rob (Beth), Marc (Lori) and Stephanie, eight grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jordan), Marcus (Langley), Anne (Ozan), Robert (Sallie), Allie, Nick, Lily, and Will, and four great-grandchildren, James, Max, Ada and Mira. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert E. Fields, Sr. and Lucy Maynard Fields Lawson and his in-laws, Charles Edward Whittle Sr. and Lillian Skaggs Whittle. James Robert “Jim” Firkins, age 74, of Cave City passed away on May 21, 2022 at his home. The Barren County native was born on April 23, 1948 to the late Robert and Christine Davis Firkins. He was married to Nancy Cox Firkins, who survives.
Jim retired as a color analyst for R.R. Donnelley and was a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church. Besides his wife he leaves to honor his memory—three daughters, Tracy McBrayer (Kent) of Bowling Green, Stephanie London (Richie) of Glasgow and Amanda Medley (Wesley) of Glasgow; one son, Scott Firkins of Bowling Green; seven grandchildren, Anne Claire Duvall (Jay Thomas), Ashton McBrayer, Travis London, Branson London, Addison London, Garret Medley and Gracey Medley; two great-grandchildren, Adleigh Cook and Andy Cook; one sister, Kathy Simpson of Glasgow and beloved dog, Maggie. She was saved when she was thirteen-years-old at Prices Creek Missionary Baptist Church, and later became a member of Big Meadow Missionary Baptist Church. Mary loved being in church with her family, and would often attend New Hope, Cedar Hill and Rolling Hills Baptist churches. She worked with her husband on the farm and in their home, caring for the needs of her family. Marcella worked for years as a receptionist for Trace Die Cast. She was a member of Jock United Baptist Church, where she remained a member until her passing. Marcella was saved at the age of thirteen and remained a diligent worker for the Lord until her final breath. She loved to be on the go and was always looking for the next adventure, but her favorite place to be was with her family and friends. Besides her husband, she leaves to honor her memory— a son, Greg Hudson (Vicki) of Brownsville; two daughters, Roxanne Moore (Randy) and Paula Vincent (James) both of Franklin; Mamaw to fifteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren; Aunt Cella to several nieces and nephews and a friend to many. Jean was a beloved member of her community. She dedicated her life to service and caring for those closest to her. Prior to retiring, Jean practiced as a registered nurse for over sixty-years, worked with her husband as a co-owner of Wilkes Clinic in Brownsville, and served in numerous civic and social organizations. ‘Ruby Jean’, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was loving, compassionate, generous, and witty. She leaves to honor her memory— a son, Brad G. Wilkes and his wife, Lynn of Beaufort, NC; a granddaughter, Brandie Wilkes Garner and her husband, Dexter; a great- grandson, Hindrix Grayson of Grifton, NC; her husband, Chester Bays of Bowling Green; stepson, Danny Bays and his wife, Susan of Bowling Green, along with a host of adored cousins and friends. The Edmonson County native was born on January 4, 1931 to the late Carl Irvin and Semarimis Agnes Doyel Hanson. She was married to the late William H. Butts, Jr.
Mary Alice was not afraid of hard work. She received her Bachelors of Education degree from Western Kentucky University, Masters of Religious Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and several other degrees from Berea College and University of Louisville. She was an educator early on in the Caverna Independent School district and for Jefferson County Schools. Mary Alice also worked along side her later husband and was part owner of Home Insulating Company. Her other accomplishments were receiving her real estate license and becoming a broker. Mary Alice was a Kentucky Colonel and was a member of Cedar Hill United Baptist Church. She leaves to honor her memory— her five nephews and a niece, Ronnie Hanson (Linda), David Hanson (Sharon), Randy Gonterman (Pam), Steve Hanson (Jennifer), Stanley Gonterman (Karen), and Julie Gackenbach (Preston Rutledge) along with several cousins, great and great-great nieces and nephews. The Edmonson County native was a daughter of the late Luther M. and Mary Denham Long and wife of the late Vernon D. Hammons. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Marie, Mollie, Ruby, Gerald, Earl and Marcel. She was a homemaker and a member of the Otter Gap Baptist Church. Leaving to cherish her memory is two sons, John M. Hammons (Marsha) and Vernon M. Hammons (Joyce); four grandchildren, Marlisa Etnoyer (Scott), Eric Hammons (Stephanie), Marcie Dexter (Eric) and Johna Walden (Jeff); several nieces and nephews. Massey (C.R.) age 70 of Brownsville, departed this life in the early morning of Monday, May 2, 2022, at his home. He was born on January 12, 1952, to the late Howard and Jewell Webb Massey. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Teresa Massey, a sister Linda Johnson, and a brother Larry Massey, and his beloved dog Dixie. He leaves to honor his memory; a daughter, Lori Burnett (Jesse); a granddaughter, Lexus Burnett-Pierce (Austin); and several nieces, nephews, great nephews and great nieces.
Cecil was raised up in Brownsville, but also spent some of his childhood in Louisville, where as a 12 year-old boy he found salvation at Montgomery General Baptist Church and was baptized in the Ohio River on the Indiana side by Bro. Lawrence Stice. Cecil went on to marry the love of his life, Barbara T, on May 10, 1971. The following year, they welcomed a beautiful baby girl Lori Ann on Valentine’s Day! Cecil worked as an EMT for the Edmonson County Ambulance in the late 70s and went on to work at Mammoth Cave National Park before retiring from Weyerhaeuser. In the last few years, he remarked that the power of prayer can move people, and he hoped that others would know what Jesus could do for them, just as he had done for him. Husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, & friend were just some of the many titles he held. Cecil was known as a simple man and would always be the first to offer help, if someone was in need. Though we may be in pain here on earth, he is now at peace and free from this worrisome world. His love for his family will remain with the ones he loved here on earth. May he be reunited with Teresa and their dog Dixie. Interment will be in Red Hill Cemetery. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.
An Edmonson County Native, Barbara was born on April 11, 1940 to the late Reverend Charlie and Millie Highbaugh Sanders. Always a family woman, Barbara cherished spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Any given day, you could find her in her kitchen cooking up a storm with fresh vegetables from her garden- a true member of the Homemakers Club. When she wasn’t donning her apron, you could find her sewing, gardening, traveling, and giving back to her beloved Oakland community. She was an active member of Oakland Baptist Church. Barbara retired from Oakland Elementary School where she gave 18 years of service as the Cafeteria Manager. She was incredibly passionate about her work and was instrumental in implementing the Breakfast Program for Warren County Schools. She was also a recipient of the Kentucky Colonel and Good Ole Boy award. Barbara is preceded in death by five sisters including Cora Turner, Christine Gipson, Daphna Sanders, Delta Sanders, Josie Taylor, and three brothers including Clarence, Japath, and Duel Sanders. She leaves many who loved her dearly to honor her memory. These include her husband, Billy Watt, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage. Her children Teresa Rae (Joey) Keith, Beverly (Kevin) Lovelace, Keith Rigdon, Roger (Ellen) Watt, Richard (Sandy) Rigdon, Donna (Rick) Coffman, and Robbie (fiance- Carmen Bates) Watt, sixteen grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. Her two sisters, Betty (Michael) Childress of Munfordville and Cleo (Bill) Brown of Mammoth Cave as well as two brothers, Oda (Rosalee) Sanders of Pig and Billy (Barbara) Sanders of Mammoth Cave, as well as many nieces and nephews, also live on to honor her. Christine was the firstborn child to Olard and Stella Mae Reedy on March 4th, 1929, in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Born a Southern Baptist, she never strayed from her faith in Jesus Christ. She took great solitude in listening to her family members singing praise songs.
She was the big sister to one brother, Fred, and six sisters, Carolyn, Judy, Wanda, Barbara Fae, Joyce Ann and Yvonne. When she was eighteen, she married Donald Booth and gave birth to two sons, Harley Eugene and Lawrence Leon Booth. In 1955, she married James Virgil Bird and gave birth to one daughter, Pamela Kay, and two sons, James Virgil, Jr. and Keenan Wayne. Christine was a rock and a survivor! She was independent, proud, strong, giving, loving and more beautiful than she knew. She had a long and meaningful life. Married for fifty-three years, she traveled to places only a few could dream of. She made many life-long friends throughout her travels and had a significant impact on all who knew her. She loved gardening and had a definite green thumb, especially with roses. She was ‘The Plant Lady’ throughout many businesses in the Sacramento area. Christine will always be remembered graciously. She is survived by her children, Harley Eugene of Sacramento CA, Pamela Kay of Seward Alaska, James Virgil Jr. of Bakersfield CA, and Keenan Wayne of Rocklin CA. Christine also had numerus grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Randell was a member of Hubsfield Holiness Church, where he remained a member until his passing. He began working in construction as a young man. Randell then went on to work for Vincent Ford Dealership in Brownsville and realized his true passion was in cars. He opened Carroll Brother’s with his older brother, Elba, where they worked alongside one another for several years honing their skills in body work. Later on, Randell took over Carroll Brother’s, where he was owner and operator for over forty years. He passed this dream down to his sons and grandsons, who are still in business today. He leaves to honor his memory— his children, Reva Blanton (Arlen), Kenny Carroll (Becky) and Bobby Carroll (Jeannine) all of Bee Spring; his grandchildren, Nick Carroll (Nora), Jeana Blanton, Adam Blanton, Matthew Carroll, Josh Carroll and Rachel Carroll (Kyle); eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, and one sister Texie Colley. Jean was a homemaker and of the Church of Christ faith. She leaves to honor her memory— her son, Jamie Scott Glass of Wingfield; her daughter, Amber Nicole “Nikki” Clark of Paducah; her siblings, Joan Norris, Bethel Eugene “Simon” Carmickle and Lawrence Earl “Larry” Carmickle; special caregiver, Ashley Wiestling, and several nieces and nephews. The Edmonson County native was born on June 9, 1926 to the late Elrie and Bertha Salings Lindsey. She was married to her devoted husband of forty-two years, Bert Skaggs, until he preceded her in death on August 8, 1988.
Elaine was saved as a twelve-year-old girl at the old Midway School House. She joined Midway United Missionary Baptist Church, and was a faithful member and pillar of the church until her health recently failed her. Elaine was a homemaker and worked with her hands to provide for her family. She had a kind, gentle spirit, and her greatest desire was for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and neighbors to know and serve the Lord. She leaves to honor her memory— three daughters, Marcia Lindsey (Buster), Myra Cole and Melody Prunty (Pat); six grandchildren, Renee Webb (Eddie), Rev. Jonathan Lindsey (Dana), Amberly Alexander (Ryan), Britney Franich (Jeff), Taylor Renfro (Seth) and Kelci Prunty; ten great-grandchildren, Andrew Webb (Ashlee), Leslie Webb, Hannah Board (Bailey), Kaylee Lindsey, Lainey and Avery Alexander, Landon and Tenley Franich, Levi and Grayson Renfro; two great-great grandchildren, Jaxon and Tanner Webb; two siblings, Janice Chatfield (Rick) and Margie Browning, and a host of church family and friends. Nicole was born to the late James Russell “Rusty” Gomez and Shirleen Pellegrin Conrad (Bruce) in Houma on October 15, 1974. Nicole is survived by her fiancé Rocky Hano, one daughter, Tayler McCaffrey Fichtelman (Tristan), and one granddaughter, Luna Fichtelman, one sister, Pixie Gomez Meredith (Lonnie) and one brother, Jamie Russell Gomez (Tami), along with many nieces, nephews and loved friends. Nicole was saved at Wingfield United Baptist Church on July 21, 2005, at an old time altar. She didn’t want to leave her family and loved ones, but the Lord called and Nicole went to meet Him. Nicole will truly be missed by her family and friends and all who knew her. She had a vivacious personality and an infectious laugh. “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” A private memorial service will be held at a later date. William Frank Harper, 87 of Smiths Grove passed peacefully on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at the Hospice House of Southern Kentucky.
The Edmonson County Kentucky native was a son of the late William Guy Harper and Delphia Opal Poteet Harper. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Veronica Lynn Gregory and granddaughter, Jessica Marie Gregory. Frank attended the Smiths Grove Methodist Church and retired from the U S Navy. His survivors include his wife, Marion Harper. Two brothers, Mike Harper and Norman Harper; three sisters, Elizabeth Swanner, Joyce Smith and Lind Gail Harper; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 12 noon Thursday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Grove Chapel with burial in Smiths Grove Cemetery. Donald Wilson Cowles, age 78, of Chalybeate, departed this life Thursday, April 21, 2022 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. The Edmonson county native was born July 15, 1943, to the late Larmie and Norma Wilson Cowles. He was married to his helpmate and best friend of fifty seven years, Barbara Kaye Cowles.
Donald was a barber by trade for over forty years, and was fortunate enough to work along side his brother, Ronald. Together, they owned Cowles Barber Shop, where lots of friends and memories were made. He was also a member of the Kentucky Colonels. Donald was a faithful member of Chalybeate United Baptist Church. Besides his wife he leaves to honor his memory-- his children Cynthia McDougle (Anthony), Tammy Thien, and Brian Cowles (Kim) all of Chalybeate, four grandchildren, Heather White (Kyle), Drew McDougle (Mandee), Taylor Carroll (Chad) and Evan Cowles; seven great-grandchildren, Dalton Carroll, Thomas Carroll, Knox White, Allie Decker, Lexi Decker, Honor White and Abel Carroll; three brothers, Kenneth Cowles (Linda), Ronald Cowles (Opal) and Terry Cowles (Darlene). Beside his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Billy Ray and Jimmy Cowles, and two sisters, Opal Grimes and Barbara Hines. Sharon retired from Mallory Corporation, and worked as a homemaker, taking care of her family. She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Besides her husband, she leaves to honor her memory— two sisters, Juanita DeWeese (Kenneth) of Corydon, IN and Sheila Hatcher (Melvin) of Cave City; special niece, Peggy Abernathy (John) of Cave City and several other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
