Edmonson Voice Staff Report The Judicial Nominating Commission has announced the names of those nominated to fill a vacant District Court judgeship for Butler, Edmonson, Hancock and Ohio counties. The three counties make up the 38th Judicial District, the vacancy of which is in the district’s 1st division. Edmonson County Attorney, J.B. Hines has been named as one of the nominees. The other nominees are attorneys Richard Joseph Deye of Morgantown, and Tara Nicole Ward of Hartford. "I am humbled by the nomination, and would be honored to serve as the district court judge, Division 1, of the 38th Judicial District," Hines told the Edmonson Voice. The District Court judicial seat became vacant when Judge Renona C. Browning resigned in August 2016. In the event of a vacant judge's seat, the Kentucky Constitution requires that three names be submitted to the governor, chosen by the Judicial Nominating Commission, which is made up of Mark Mudd of Morgantown, Steven Geary of Beaver Dam, Randy Dean Stroup of Logansport, and Charles Mattingly of Fordsville. The Governor then has 60 days to appoint a replacement. His office will make the final announcement. Hines has a private law practice and has served as the county attorney for Edmonson since he was elected in 2014. He earned his juris doctor from the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law. Should Hines be chosen to fill the vacant role, Edmonson County Judge Executive Wil Cannon would then appoint a new county attorney, which would serve until the next general election in 2018.

Darren Doyle, story and photos Firefighters responded to the home of Matt and Julie Richardson in the 800 block of Reed Road near the Mohawk Community on Sunday night, around 8pm. According to statements from Mr. Richardson and Chalybeate Fire Chief Daniel Johnson, the fire appeared to have started above the family's fireplace insert. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the top floor of the house, which has a basement, and the family chose to stay on the property and sleep in the basement that night. Mr. Richardson said the fire rekindled around 2:30am, possibly from an electrical connection somewhere near the fireplace and he attempted to fight the fire with his own garden hose, but was unable to contain the blaze. Firefighters returned to the scene but were unable to save the structure. The family lost nearly everything in the fire. Family, friends, and neighbors were helping sort through charred items early Monday morning to see what could be salvaged, but the family, who also has a 10 year old son, needs your help. The Chalybeate Fire Department has started a relief effort on behalf of the Richardson family and the following clothing sizes are needed immediately:
"Thankfully we were able to get out safely," Mr. Richardson said. "That's the important part. We can replace all this stuff." Responding to the scene were the Chalybeate, Brownsville, Wingfield, Rocky Hill, and Smiths Grove Fire Departments along with Warren Rural Electric. No injuries were reported. |
