Picture
Mrs. Sarah Hatton was named new principal at South Edmonson Elementary today.
Darren Doyle, story and photo:
South Edmonson Elementary will have a brand new principal to start the next school year after announcing that Mrs. Sarah Hatton has accepted the position.

Superintendent of Schools Brian Alexander said Mrs. Hatton, who comes from Logan County, had glowing recommendations.

"Our Site Based Decision Making Council underwent a very thorough process with nine total applicants," he said. "One withdrew from the running and then five candidates were given interviews. Our Site Based felt strongly about Mrs. Hatton and we're excited to bring her experience to South Edmonson. She seems ready to hit the ground running."

Mrs. Hatton has 14 years experience as a teacher in all grades K-8th and has 6 years experience as an assistant principal at Auburn Elementary in Logan County.

"I was looking for a school in a strong community that was also in a family-hometown-type of community," Mrs. Hatton said. "That's really important to me and I feel South Edmonson and Edmonson County have that."

She was already somewhat familiar with the county, having worked at Camp Joy over 20 years ago while studying in college.

She is the third female principal in the history of Edmonson County Schools. Anna Sturgeon was the first, who served that role at ECHS from 1998 to 2001. Mary Alice Cole also served as Kyrock principal from 2001 to 2010.

The departing Josh Long has accepted a job as a counselor at South Green Elementary in Glasgow, Superintendent Alexander said.

Mrs. Hatton said she is excited to meet everyone at SEES and is eager to get to know the community.

"I'm looking forward to the upcoming year," she added. "I'm hoping we can get back to some normalcy and have a lot of fun at South Edmonson."

She is married and has four children, ranging in ages from 2 years to 14 years old. She will officially begin her duties on July 1st.

The Edmonson County 5/6 Center also has a principal vacancy after Rex Booth recently accepted the Principal role at Russellville High School. According to Mr. Alexander, the 5/6 Center plans on making an announcement sometime next week.

Flooding at the Edmonson County Courthouse earlier today.
Darren Doyle, story: photos submitted by Tammi Willhite:
The rain came down in buckets this afternoon throughout the county and Brownsville seemed to get even more than that as flash flooding forced an early closure of the Edmonson County Courthouse today.

Heavy thunderstorms moved into the area around just before 2PM today, and when they did, they didn't waste any time letting folks at the courthouse know what was happening.

County Treasurer Tammi Willhite, who's office is in the Judge Executive's Office, said heavy rains caused the water levels to rise through the courtyard and eventually into the courthouse.

"We had water coming in every door," she said. "We all jumped in and started trying to clean it up, but it came in so fast. It was just a mess," she said.

She said several offices inside the courthouse had standing water as a result of the rain.

"We had water coming in all over; we were all running around with mops and shop-vacs."

The Edmonson County Road Department, located just east of the HWY 70 ballpark, also flooded today.

Sheriff's Office Says 14 Arrests Made During ATV Park Event: 30 Charges of Drug, Alcohol-Related Offenses

Darren Doyle, story:
The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office and other emergency personnel were busy over the course of Wednesday, June 16th, through this past weekend as they upped their patrols in the Lincoln Community during the "Redneck Rave" event held at Blue Holler ATV Park.

In a statement released from the Sheriff's Office today, they reported that 48 individuals were charged with various offenses, including 14 arrested.  In addition, there were 30 charges involving drugs or alcohol-related offenses.

The statement also said there were 63 traffic-related offenses charged, two arrest warrants were served on a fugitive, as well as six felony charges that included assault, strangulation, and wanton endangerment.

"The Sheriff’s Office also escorted EMS with security during medical transports responding to such injuries as broken bones, severed and dislocated fingers, impalement through the abdomen, lacerations, and severe intoxication-related medical issues," the statement said.

Sheriff Shane Doyle spoke to the Edmonson Voice regarding the activity over the past several days.

"The Sheriff's Office was caught off-guard last year during this event," he said. " We were determined that it wouldn't happen again.  I want to thank our local emergency and first responders for all the hard work that was put in to deal with this event.  I firmly believe that because of the large presence of law enforcement, the event didn't cause as many problems as it could have.  We were also pleased with the overwhelming support that the local community members showed.  Many of the local residents offered food, drink, and a cool place to rest if we needed it.  We wish we could provide this kind of presence regularly, but our limited budget can't sustain that amount of manpower.  While there were many challenges to overcome, the cooperation with our EMS, volunteer fire fighters, volunteer deputies, and other law enforcement agencies allowed us to make the best out of a difficult situation."

Doyle also said they responded to theft and assault complaints within the park, and they administered multiple traffic safety checkpoints around the Lincoln community throughout the event, with the help of District 5 Constable Charlie Peck and the Kentucky State Police.

The Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by Mammoth Cave National Park Rangers and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife on various traffic stops and calls for service.

Bowling Green Man Arrested Shortly After
Picture
A recovered 2016 Chevy pickup, stolen while hooked to a trailer in the middle of the day.
Darren Doyle, story:
It was a short-lived heist for a Bowling Green man on Thursday as he attempted to steal a working man's truck in the middle of the day--while the truck was hooked to a trailer, and as the owner was currently using equipment from the trailer at the property.

Daniel Skaggs, a Chalybeate resident and owner of Webb-Co Lawn Service, was operating his tractor and bush hog on a property in Richardsville. His 2016 Chevy pickup was hooked to a gooseneck trailer nearby and Skaggs said he went to get a drink from a cooler in the truck. As he approached, he could see the truck was gone.

"As I got closer, I saw where they pulled it off the ball somehow and let the jack stands bury up in the blacktop, and the tailgate was ripped off," Skaggs said. "My wallet and pistol was in the console. So I canceled my cards before I called 911 since I knew it had been gone at least 20 minutes."

Skaggs said his trailer was then blocking the road where it had been moved during the theft and a passerby stopped on his way to work. Skaggs explained the situation to him and the man said he'd seen the truck just up the road, completely destroyed.

"Thankfully, they didn't hit an innocent person or kill someone," Skaggs said.

Shortly after, Skaggs said a witness reported that he saw a man sneak into a back door of a mobile home nearby.

"We had a description by now because another farmer stopped and said he saw a guy trying to figure out how to unhook the trailer in the field, even though he didn’t think anything of it at the time, but he fit the description of the same man sneaking in the mobile home," Skaggs said. "Me and two other guys that passed through surrounded the trailer while the homeowner I was working for called 911 again and told the dispatcher that we had him trapped. The cop who was at my truck scene then came rolling in on two wheels. He went in the front door of the mobile home and came out with this guy in handcuffs."

Phillip G. Parker (33) of Bowling Green
Phillip G. Parker (33) of Bowling Green was arrested and charged with:
  • Theft by unlawful taking or disposition (Auto) - $10,000 OR MORE BUT U/$1,000,000
  • Criminal Mischief, first degree
  • Criminal Mischief, third degree
  • Leaving scene of accident-failure to render aid or assistance

Parker also has an active "Failure to appear" charge, according to the Warren County Detention Center website. According to the site, he is being held on a $1525 bond.

Skaggs said he now has to wait for his insurance company to work out the details on replacing his stolen, and now wrecked vehicle. He said the suspect had recently been homeless and a nearby family had taken him in.

"I depend on that truck to make my living, so I hope this will be a fast process from here," he said.

The arrest was made by the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

Carrisa L. Carey (28) of Mt. Washington
Darren Doyle, story:
Two females were arrested and face multiple drug and other charges involving a minor at a road safety checkpoint on Nolin Dam Road on Wednesday.

While conducting the checkpoint near the Lincoln Fire Department, Edmonson County Sheriff’s deputies observed an open alcoholic beverage inside a Pontiac Grand Am, occupied by two adult females, identified as Carrisa L. Carey (28) of Mt. Washington, and Gabrielle L. Kemp (27) of Shepherdsville, along with a minor, the Sheriff's Office stated.

As deputies made contact with the occupants, the operator reportedly admitted having marijuana in the vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies then conducted a search of the vehicle, which resulted in the discovery of suspected marijuana, suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and several open alcohol containers. The minor inside the vehicle admitted to drinking alcohol and deputies found suspected marijuana in the minor’s seat, the Sheriff's Office stated. Officials said neither the operator nor adult passenger took ownership of the suspected drugs.

Carey and Kemp were both charged and arrested for:
  • Possession of Open Alcoholic Beverage Container in Motor Vehicle Prohibited
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Possess of Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (methamphetamine)
  • Drug Paraphernalia—Buy/Possess
  • Unlawful Transaction with a Minor—2nd Degree

Law enforcement said the vehicle was the very first to pass through the checkpoint on Wednesday, which has been set up to help handle the extra traffic due to the current event at a popular ATV park in the area. The event, called "Redneck Rave," claims they have sold 20K tickets to the park for the event that will continue through the weekend.

"As we stated earlier in the week, we want to be a welcoming host to all that enter our county, but we expect you to follow the law," said Sheriff Shane Doyle. "We're asking you to be respectful of other property and leave our county in better shape than you found it. We've stepped up patrols and are working with our emergency service partners to provide the best possible service for both our local residents and guests."

Carey was also discovered to have two outstanding Bullitt County Bench Warrants for failing to appear on charges of Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition, One Headlight, Failure to Wear Seat Belts, Operating on Suspended or Revoked Operator’s License, and Failure of Owner to Maintain Required Insurance.

The Sheriff's Office also stated that the minor on scene was released to the mother.

Sheriff's Office Says They Will Increase Patrols During Upcoming ATV Park Event

Open Letter To Community From Sheriff's Office
Picture
The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office has released a statement regarding an upcoming event this week at a local ATV park. The entire statement is published below:

To the citizens of Edmonson County: This Wednesday through Saturday, June 16th-20th, Blue Holler ATV Park is hosting a large outdoor event called "The Redneck Rave." Promoters are advertising more than 20,000 tickets sold. Even if only half of those tickets are sold, our county's population will double this week, and that doesn't include the people visiting Nolin Lake, Mammoth Cave National Park, or area horse camps.

All branches of emergency services will be operating with all available personnel during this time period, so we ask for your patience. The last two similar events have resulted in numerous arrests, along with rescue and EMS-related calls. Due to the isolated location of the park and the trails, these calls can be time consuming and can require substantial personnel. As always, we are here to serve the county, but understand that response times may be longer than usual between Wednesday and Saturday of this week due to the anticipated call volume from this event.

The Sheriff's Office will have all available officers on mandatory overtime and have requested help from all available volunteers. The District 5 Constable will also be actively patrolling and responding to calls. In addition, the Sheriff's Office also requested the help of the Kentucky State Police and they have graciously assigned Troopers to work in our county. We have also requested assistance from the Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Mammoth Cave National Park Service Rangers, in addition to neighboring agencies in the event of a critical incident.

Both Edmonson Co. Emergency Management and KY Regional Emergency Management have arranged for a 24-hour command post to be set up in the event area, with advanced communication equipment and internet capabilities. Multiple meetings with Lincoln VFD, Edmonson EMS and all other fire departments in the county have been held so that we can be prepared as possible for this event. Many of these people are volunteers, so please thank them every chance you get.

To the residents and travelers of the Lincoln Community: Law Enforcement will be stepping up traffic enforcement and patrol in this area, in an attempt to address traffic concerns and other complaints that may be a result of this event. We ask everyone to be patient while traveling in the area, use added caution in heavily trafficked areas, and as always, obey the law.

To the attendees of the Redneck Rave: We welcome you to Edmonson County and appreciate you supporting our local businesses. We wish you happy and safe travels; however, there will be ZERO TOLERANCE for violations involving trespassing, ATVS on the roadways, alcohol and drug offenses, disorderly conduct, and/or public intoxication. Please enjoy yourself and this event, but also realize there will be a large law enforcement presence in the area and we will enforce the law.

Thanks to everyone for your understanding and support. We are proud to serve the greatest county in the Commonwealth, Edmonson County, Kentucky.

Respectfully,
The Edmonson County Sheriff's Office

Edmonson Voice Report:
A Cub Run man was tasered after a foot pursuit, following a vehicle pursuit after he fled the scene of an active traffic stop, according to the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office stated that around 7PM on Sunday, June 13th, a deputy observed a silver Dodge pickup truck approach the intersection of Brier Creek Road and Nolin Dam Road with the driver not wearing a seat belt. In addition, the deputy reportedly observed a cracked windshield and then discovered the pickup's registration plate was expired.

The Sheriff's Office stated that a traffic stop was initiated in a parking lot at the intersection of Nolin Dam and Stockholm Road.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Keith L. Huff (41) of Cub Run, and inside the vehicle was also a female passenger, later identified as Tiffany Stephan. The Sheriff's Office said that Huff reported to law enforcement that he did not have a driver’s license and he refused to provide his social security number to verify his identity. Huff was instructed to exit the vehicle but allegedly refused. He was given additional commands to exit the vehicle but he refused and fled the scene, the Sheriff's Office stated.

Huff then allegedly led law enforcement on a 2.5-mile pursuit, at speeds in excess of 75MPH  in a 55MPH zone. Huff then pulled into the 900-block of F.D. Meredith Road (Cub Run), striking a camper in the front yard, and then fled on foot towards the house, according to the Sheriff's Office. Huff retreated into the house and after deploying his taser, a sheriff’s deputy was able to detain Huff without further incident, officials said.

Huff was arrested and charged with:
  • Fleeing or Evading Police, 1st Degree (motor vehicle)
  • No Registration Plates
  • Obstructed Vision and/or Windshield
  • Wanton Endangerment—1st Degree
  • Failure to Wear Seatbelt

Fiscal Court Recap: Judge Exec Discusses Federal Money For County

6/14/2021

Picture
Darren Doyle, story:
Edmonson County Fiscal Court met virtually today to discuss the latest agenda, which included updates from Judge Executive Wil Cannon concerning over two million dollars in federal money that's coming to Edmonson County; about half of which the county has already received.

The money comes from the American Rescue Plan Act, a federally-funded program intended to pump money back into local communities; however, Judge Cannon said the specific areas in which the funds can be used are still unclear.

"I hope (the government) does some work on this and give us a little bit broader way of spending to where it will help the county and help Edmonson Countians," said Judge Cannon.

He discussed how one example of the approved areas would cost the county more than not, by explaining a scenario of one resident that might live at the end of a road with no county water. The funds could be used to bring service to the resident; however, the county water company would have to use more resources to maintain that single customer than they would receive from the customer's use of their services.

"They'd be giving us money to help people, but it would cost us a lot more in the future, and there's a lot of things going on like this with this stuff and I'm not happy with the way this has all come down. If they want to help the counties, they should open it up and let us determine how best the need is for the county and use it accordingly. Hopefully they'll do that someday, I don't know."

The county has already received $1.1 million from the funding with the rest expected to be deposited soon. A budget amendment reading for the added funds was approved today by magistrates; however, Judge Cannon stated in a March 22, 2021 fiscal court meeting that it was unclear whether or not the spending would be decided by himself, which was the case in previous CARES funding, or if by fiscal court vote or other means. At that meeting, Cannon said even if left up to the Judge Executive's discretion, he would likely bring it before fiscal court for discussion. He also noted that he welcomed any magistrate to discuss the funding possibilities with him at any time.
Picture
Magistrates also voted to approve the purchase of a new software system that will be used by the county road department. The software, called iWorQ Sytems, will allow real-time tracking of costs, manpower, other resources, and will grant magistrates, road employees, and administrative and accounting personnel access to the jobs.

County Treasurer Tammi Willhite said the program will tremendously help the county keep track of all that goes into the county's road projects, and will be well worth the investment in order to keep up with the federal requirements the county must follow for FEMA projects. Willhite said that the county is depending on funding from FEMA for over 400 projects this year alone, and without proper communication and record keeping between multiple departments and personnel, this funding will not be accessible.

The cost of the program will be $5K for the first year, then $3K per year after that. Magistrates approved the new software purchase.

Judge Cannon updated the court on improvements that are currently being made at Bee Spring Park. He said that extensive cleaning, plumbing repairs, pest control, and other facility improvements are underway. He said that after these improvements are complete, reviews will be made at both the Chalybeate and HWY 70 parks to determine what further needs will be met.

The court also discussed the upcoming Freedom Fest, which is scheduled for Friday, July 2nd. The event is returning to Edmonson County after being cancelled last year due to COVID. The event is free and will feature awards for all youth baseball and softball participants, concessions, and a huge fireworks show that is free to the public.

The court agreed to schedule a county surplus sale for Saturday, July 24th. Details on the sale will be coming later.

Judge Cannon said that Dog Control Officer Kenny Heath will be resigning due to health concerns. Newly hired assistant officer Anna Dietzer will be moving into that role.

Cannon also updated the court on a proposed new development in Chalybeate, which is approximately 120 acres. He said his office has received calls from the public with concerns of such a large development being constructed in the area. He said that most of the homes are planned to be 1300 square feet on 1/3 acre lots and that the goals set from the county would be focused on community lighting, sidewalks, and traffic being flowed to HWY 101 and away from smaller county roads not meant to handle that much traffic.

It is important to note, that without zoning, developers have freedom to do what they wish, where they wish, as long as they follow regulations from the local planning commission.
Picture
Magistrates also voted to:
  1.  Approve County Attorney Bond # 2122244 Renewal.
  2. Approve to hire Brad Vincent, full time Road employee at $14.00 per hour, date of hire 6/7/2021.
  3. Approve to hire Ray Willhite, part time Maintenance at $15.00 per hour, date of hire 6/7/2021.
  4. Approve Tammi Willhite pay rate at $50,000 annually, effective 6/27/2021.
  5. Approve Terry Massey pay rate at $11,180 annually, effective 6/27/2021.
  6. Approve Ritchie Jones pay rate at $6,000 annually, effective 6/27/2021.
  7. Approve Amy Heath pay increase from $13.25 to $13.75 per hour, effective 6/27/2021.
  8. Approve 2% County Employee raises effective 6/27/2021.
  9. Approve Ordinance EC21-10, FY22 Budget, Second Reading.

Judge Cannon said that today's virtual meeting will the be last one for now, with the next meeting being held on June 28, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. in the upstairs court room.

"Hopefully this is last Zoom meeting we'll ever have," he said today.

Masks Still Required For Public Transit, Health Facilities, and Long-term Care Facilities
Picture
Kentucky overall incidence rate, June 11, 2021. (KY Dept. of Public Health)
Darren Doyle, story:
Today, Governor Andy Beshear lifted the statewide mask mandate for most settings and ended capacity limits for restaurants, bars, and other public venues. The mask mandate for vaccinated Kentuckians has been lifted since May 13. A new executive order keeps the mask requirement in place only in certain high-risk settings identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: public transit, long-term care facilities and health care facilities.

It was his final daily press conference, his 250th one. He reported that 2.1 million Kentuckians have received the COVID-19 vaccine, or 58% of the adult population.

"Today, we are lifting the final restrictions put in place that have kept our people safe during this once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic," he said.

Edmonson County's COVID rate has plunged since January, averaging around 50 active cases for months. On Tuesday, the Barren River District Health Department reported 53 active COVID cases in Edmonson County, or .04% of the county's population (less than one-half of one percent).

The overall current incidence rate in the county is 0, according to the state's latest data.

Edmonson County has consistently had the lowest numbers in the BRDHD area in total COVID cases and deaths determined from COVID.

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Electronic Crime Branch arrested Clayton R. Griffith, 38, on charges related to child sexual abuse material.

Griffith was arrested as the result of an undercover Internet Crimes Against Children investigation, according to a press release from KSP. The KSP Electronic Crime Branch began the investigation after discovering the suspect sharing images of child sexual exploitation online.

The investigation resulted in a search warrant at a residence in Leitchfield on June 10, 2021. Equipment used to facilitate the crime was seized and taken to KSP’s forensic laboratory for examination. The investigation is ongoing.

Griffith is currently charged with four counts of possession of matter portraying a minor in a sexual performance and one count of distribution of matter portraying a minor in a sexual performance. These charges are Class-D felonies punishable by one to five years in prison. Griffith was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

The Kentucky Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force is comprised of more than twenty-six local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The mission of the ICAC Task Force, created by the United States Department of Justice and administrated by the Kentucky State Police, is to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in developing a response to cyber enticement and child sexual abuse material investigations. This support encompasses forensic and investigative components, training and technical assistance, victim services, prevention and community education. The ICAC program was developed in response to the increasing number of children and teenagers using the internet, the proliferation of child sexual abuse material, and the heightened online activity of predators searching for unsupervised contact with underage victims.

Edmonson Voice Report:
Two individuals were arrested on meth and other charges this morning after law enforcement responded to a call of passed out individuals in a vehicle, according to the Edmonson County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said they responded to Alford Road in Brownsville around 9AM on Wednesday, June 9th after receiving a call that a male and female were passed out in a vehicle. Law enforcement stated that when they arrived on scene, they located a male, identified as Phildon D. Wooden, (39) of Big Clifty, and a female, identified as Katrina S. Holderman, (38) of Caneyville in the vehicle, along with drug paraphernalia commonly used for smoking methamphetamine lying in plain view.

Officials said that Wooden was asked to step out of the vehicle, at which point he began reaching inside his pockets. A deputy reportedly instructed him to stop, then conducted an exterior frisk of his pockets, feeling what he knew to be a syringe. The deputy asked Wooden if the syringe was capped and warned him that he would be charged with wanton endangerment if it was not; Wooden stated that it was capped, according to the Sheriff's Office. The deputy stated that when he removed the syringe, he found it to be uncapped, with the end of the needle snapped off, and the plunger still pulled back with residue in the syringe.

In addition, the other subject Holderman, was asked to exit the vehicle and a probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted, which revealed not only a bag of suspected methamphetamine, but also numerous forms of drug paraphernalia and cash. Once Holderman was placed under arrest, she reportedly asked the deputy if medication could be retrieved from her vehicle, which was parked further up the driveway of the same location. When doing so, the deputy reportedly saw additional drug paraphernalia lying in plain view, along with more cash.

Holderman was charged and arrested for:
  • Drug Paraphernalia—Buy/Possess
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (> or = 2 GMS Methamphetamine)
Wooden was charged and arrested for:
  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 2nd or > (> or = 2GMS Methamphetamine)
  • Drug Paraphernalia—Buy/Possess
  • Wanton Endangerment—2nd Degree—Police Officer

Emergency personnel responded to the 7600 block of Morgantown Road around 7:45 this morning to the call of a two-vehicle collision. Sheriff Shane Doyle said that Shannon Ravencraft, (37) of Roundhill, was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban and lost control on the wet road. MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. –The daytime closure of the Green River Ferry Road from Maple Springs Campground to the junction of Mammoth Cave Parkway, and the Green River Ferry service has been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 10. The temporary closure will take place between 9 am and 2 pm and there will be no river access or exit options for paddlers and boaters, and the Echo River Springs Accessible Trail will be inaccessible.

The closures are required for the addition of a new canoe and kayak ramp at the Green River Ferry area. The delay is due to inclement weather which has prevented the contractor from safely launching a barge needed to continue work on the lower portion of the canoe and kayak ramp.

Hospice of Southern KY Celebrates 40 Years At Edmonson Chamber Ribbon Cutting

Team members of Hospice of Southern KY cut the ceremonial ribbon at today's event.
Darren Doyle, story and photos:
While it was a new business to the Edmonson County Chamber of Commerce, their business is nothing but new as Hospice of Southern Kentucky held a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the Edmonson County Community Center today as they celebrated 40 years of helping families in the region.

"We are so excited to be celebrating 40 years this year, providing hospice care throughout the Barren River District and certainly Edmonson County," said Valerie Landell, CEO.

Landell said that nearly everyone who uses their care says they wished they would have used it sooner.

"There's a lot of misunderstanding around hospice because people think that it's only for the dying days, and while we provide care through the dying days, hospice care is a Medicare benefit that's also covered by most insurances, and it's intended to support the patients and families for the last six months to a year."

Gail Broady, Chairperson of the Board speaks as Edmonson Chamber Director Greg Hudson and Hospice of SOKY CEO Valerie Landell stand by.
Chairperson of the Board Gail Broady said Hospice of SOKY focuses on serving people where they are, not necessarily just their facility located on Scottsville Road.

"That's whether they're at home, assisted living, the nursing home, hospitals, or at the Hospice House in Bowling Green. So when we were looking for a central location to celebrate 40 years, it's sometimes difficult to do that, so we certainly appreciate the Chamber opening their doors and allowing us to do that."

Broady also thanked the employees for their dedication to their services and said she feels the entire group considers it an honor to serve.

"We also want to thank our patients and families that open up their homes for us," she said. "That's not an easy thing to do, to open up your hearts and homes during difficult times. And it's our honor to serve and provide help, support, and kindness."

Edmonson County Chamber Director Greg Hudson thanked the crowd for coming out to today's event.

"Even though it was a rainy day, it was good to see community members come out and support our newest Chamber member," he said. "It's extremely important that we welcome our new members and show support for one another.

Their facility is located at 5872 Scottsville Rd Bowling Green, KY 42104, and they can be reached at (270) 746-9300. You can click here to visit their Facebook Page.

PVA Office Opens 2021 Property Tax Rolls For Inspection

6/1/2021

Picture
Taxpayers Can Inspect Their Property Tax Assessment From June 7- June 21, 2021
The Edmonson County real property tax roll will be opened for inspection from June 7- June 21, 2021. Under the supervision of the property valuation administrator or one of the deputies, any person may inspect the tax roll.

"We encourage everyone to double check their assessment," said PVA Kyle White. "After this period closes, there can’t be any assessment changes to the tax roll.  That’s why it is so important to correct assessments now, not in the fall when people receive their tax bills. Once Edmonson County’s tax roll is certified by the Department of Revenue, there can be no assessment changes."

This is the January 1, 2021 assessment on which state, county, and school taxes for 2021 will be due on November 1, 2021.

The tax roll is in the office of PVA in the Edmonson County courthouse and may be inspected between the hours of 7:30am to 4:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday (open until 5pm on Fri), and from 8:00am to 12 noon on Thursday and Saturday.

Any taxpayer desiring to appeal an assessment on real property made by the PVA must first request a conference with the PVA or a designated deputy. The conference may be held prior to or during the inspection period.

Any taxpayer still aggrieved by an assessment on real property, after the conference with the PVA or designated deputy, may appeal to the county board of assessment appeals.

The taxpayer can appeal his assessment by filing in person or sending a letter or other written petition stating the reasons for appeal, identifying the property and stating the taxpayer's opinion of the fair cash value of the property.

The appeal must be filed with the county clerk's office no later than one work day following the conclusion of the inspection period.

Any taxpayer failing to appeal to the county board of assessment appeals, or failing to appear before the board, either in person or by designated representative, will not be eligible to appeal directly to the Kentucky Board of Tax Appeals.

Appeals of personal property assessments shall not be made to the county board of assessment appeals. Personal property taxpayers shall be served notice under the provisions of KRS 132.450(4) and shall have the protest and appeal rights granted under the provisions of KRS 131.110.

The following steps should be taken when a taxpayer does not agree with the assessed value of personal property as determined by the office of PVA.

(1)   Property owner must list under protest (for certification) what he believes to be the fair cash value of his               property.
(2) Property owner must file a written protest directly with the Department of Revenue, Office of Property                 Valuation within 30 days from the date of the notice of assessment.
(3) This protest must be in accordance with KRS 131.110.
(4) The final decision of the Department of Revenue may be appealed to the Kentucky Board of Tax Appeals.

Homestead and Disability Exemptions.  If a person is age 65 or 100% disabled as of January 1, 2021, they qualify for up to $40,500 exemption in their real estate assessment of their primary residence.  That is approximately a $375 reduction for qualifying tax bills. If they have signed up in years past, they don’t have to again, and it will automatically be taken off their tax bill.
