County Scam: Caller Claims To Be Publisher's Clearing House, Asks For VISA Gift Card

Darren Doyle, story:
An Edmonson County resident, who wished to remain anonymous in order to protect the identity of her 86 year-old mother, called the Edmonson Voice and shared her story about intervening during a recent scam call.

The resident said she entered the home of her elderly mother and saw she was on the phone. She said her mother was so excited because she had apparently won a Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes. The resident thought something sounded fishy so she took the phone from her mother and joined the call.

"He said his name was John Cooper from Publisher's Clearing House and mom had won $7,000 a month, a Mercedes, and a year's worth of insurance from Allstate. He gave a badge number and everything. He was very convincing and well spoken. He spoke with a foreign accent but very good English," she said.

"He told my mom she needed to go to the nearest Dollar Store and buy a VISA gift card and put $505 on it. She just needed to buy it first, then give the numbers to him over the phone. He even told her he'd stay on the phone with her while she went to get it. I asked him what was this for, and he said it was for attorney and estate fees. He said once he had the gift card, he'd send the prize team out to her house and they would deliver all the prizes."

The resident said she knew it was a scam and hung up. She said she contacted the real Publisher's Clearing House and reported the incident; not only that, but she was able get the real PCH on the line when the scammer called back on her mother's phone, where the real PCH called "John" out and confronted him as the scammer."

All is well that ends well, because the elderly lady was not scammed, but it's likely she would have, had her daughter not intervened.

"I just want people to know that this stuff goes on right in our own county and our elderly are being preyed upon," she said. "Please, tell your relatives not to fall for this stuff. It's not right."

She said the incident was also reported to the Sheriff's Office, but that it's nearly impossible for the guilty parties to be caught in situations like this.

"These people are very slick at what they do," said Sheriff Shane Doyle. "Unfortunately, they are usually based outside of the U.S. and are able to use a U.S. phone number, sometimes even a local phone number. As always, if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, and NEVER give any bank or financial information to anyone over the phone or internet. Certainly, never trade gift cards for anything like this."

I also got a call from John Cooper. He said I won 2nd place in the Publishers Clearing House contest. He gave me a badge #, a check #, and a ticket #. I did not fall for it. Thank goodness.

We got call from John Cooper. He provided bank Rte numbers and acct number to pay off credit card. Spouse got two 500 vanilla Visa cards and 100. We sent copy of cards to Cooper. Then $$ was charged back to credit card. Fraudulent bank. They sucked us for 1200.
Beware beware!!!

I just got that phone call, but from a John Benjamin. I should have known it was too good to be true.

Yes these folks can be very convincing. I too got a call saying He was James Peterson, from PCH and I was 2nd prize winner. I asked many questions and also got my husband in on the call. I played long and was sent to the Wallgreens, with the PCH person on the line, to purchase a Vanilla Gift card $100.00 dollars. I was originally told I would not have to give the card number or pin but after purchase they supposedly transf. my call to Vanilla to verify it so they could put my 3000.00 on it before the Prize Patrol arived. I told them I wanted to wait for the Prize Patrol before I would give them the number but He said they had to confirm the card before they sent the PCH Patrol. I said I was not comfortable with that and he asked if I wanted to end the call. I got his name and number, Mike Brown and I would call back if I could get better confirmation this was legit. He tried to call me once again but I did not answer. So I wasted some time and 6.95 for the cost of the gift card but nothing more. I can still spend my $100.00 which is probably what he was after and maybe more.

My caller was Peter Robinson said I won $3.9 million and a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Wanted me to go get a visa vanilla card. That was the clue it was a scam.

I have someone named John Peterson, with a forien accent trying to convince me that i have won 7.5 million dollars and my choice of color Mercedes Benz, I chose Black. He wanted me to go purchase a $150 Vanilla gift card to pay for a registration fee to process the money. The money was coming through Bank of America. They claim to be from Publishers Clearing house. but when i told them publishers clearing house never asks for money up front he then said it wasn't just one company it was four different companies together that was granting the prize and they would pay the taxes on the money for me. When i started questioning the legitimacy of his claim i won He brought in his partner to help convince me. His name is John McCorminck Badge number 176C4 and his office number is 775-374-5188i. They are still at this moment trying to convince me i won. They think i left my phone somewhere and i will call them when i get it back. i messaged their number with a different phone and told them I was borrowing a friend's phone so please don't call this number that i left mine somewhere and would have it back tomorrow and i would call them as soon as i did. Doing some researched and found this site and the guys mentioned on here are the guys im dealing with im sure so I'm gonna have some fun tomorrow I will let you know what happens
