Darren Doyle, story and photos:
The City of Brownsville, at the request of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, will be placing barricades at the boat ramp under the Brownsville bridge at City Park beginning Monday morning, March 27, 2017, and for safety reasons, request that fishermen do not launch into the Green River at that location until the demolition of Lock 6 has been completed. The demo process is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 28. We were able to secure these exclusive photos which show the entire dam and lock system. You can see the deterioration of the entire structure. These photos give you one last look of the system as it has stood for over 100 years. Although the locks have not been in operation since 1965, it has been a favorite site of fishermen for decades, as countless numbers of people have fished from the top wall and nearby banks for years. The demolition of the dam and locks will forever change the landscape of the area and the flow of the Green River. Boat ramp access to the site will still be available through Sunday, March 26, 2017. We will also be covering the demolition process when it begins next week and will have more details as they come available.
