Civil War Musket To Be Displayed In Veterans Hall of Honor

L-R: Charlotte Kleier (EC Historical Society) stands with Judy Glass and her donated musket with Maurita Miller (DAV Aux).
Edmonson Voice Report:
A Civil War musket is being donated to the Edmonson County Veterans Hall of Honor, thanks to joint efforts by Charlotte Kleier, Sec/Treas. of the Edmonson Co. Historical Society, and Maurita Miller, DAV Auxiliary Commander and KY State Auxiliary Adjutant.

Mrs. Miller said the musket is a converted model U.S. Musket, 69 cal. and wears it's age gracefully.

"It is the weapon that was owned and carried by Lt. R.C. Hazelip, Union, who shot and killed Pvt. John Keefuss, also Union, for disobeying orders to guard the ferry on Feb 3, 1862," Miller said. "Word was received that Gen. Hardee and his CSA troops, were advancing to meet up with Gen Buell, Union, near Brownsville, and a battle was expected to take place. Holding the ferry at all cost was imminent."

Miller said multiple articles were written about the incident, one published in the Louisville Courier Journal in the 1940s.

According to Mrs. Miller, Judy Glass, wife of the late Michael S. Glass Sr., descendant of Nacy Luttrell, donated the musket for historical purposes, fulfilling her husband’s wishes that it be donated someplace the public may share its legendary story. The musket was given to Nacy by R.C. Hazelips’ brother sometime after the tragic shooting occurred.

Mrs. Glass had been looking in different places to leave the relic, and was being urged by others for her contribution to be made to them.

"Charlotte Kleier invited Mrs. Glass to come to Brownsville and see the Veterans Hall of Honor and the Memorial Wall," Miller said. "She was very impressed with what she found, and with Edmonson County being where the incident occurred, she immediately knew this would be its home from now on.  We are grateful for this addition to our Civil War section, and the DAV Auxiliary will have it ready for display following preparations being completed."
